Drawing on research (Kouzis and Puzner) and The Leadership Challenge, Johnson identifies four core qualities leaders must have to be credible: honesty, forward-looking (vision), competence, and the ability to inspire. He encourages listeners to self-assess these areas and to improve incrementally. The episode also includes a brief promo for the Optymyze Premium membership (30-day free trial).

Hi, this is Brian. Welcome back to another micro class. This one's on credibility, which is the foundation of leadership. Credibility and the four aspects of our personality and who we are that leads to that level of credibility that we want to be extraordinary leaders. It's inspired by the Leadership Challenge. Amazing book. So if you want to reach your potential as an exemplary leader, you need to have a strong foundation, the foundation of your abilities as a leader. Come down to your credibility to people who may follow you. Your credibility is made up of four characteristics. Now, in the note, I share the 20 different characteristics a leader has that one can have, right? If they want to be a great leader. And in the research that Kouzis and Puzner did, they ask people, okay, out of these 20 characteristics, what seven do you think are essential or would you want to see in a leader who you would willingly follow? Out of the 20 characteristics, what seven do you think are most important? And what they found was that basically always these four qualities we're going to talk about came up again and again and again and again and again. So check out the note for those 20 characteristics. Do the test yourself. Right. For now, here's the punchline. The four qualities that people want to see in leaders are these. First, honesty. Talk about them more in detail in a moment. Second, they are forward looking. Third, they are competent. And fourth, they are inspiring. So they're honest. Leaders are honest, period. You can trust them. Next big idea. We're going to talk about how to build that. Do what you say you will do. That's one really powerful way to build your credibility, right? You're honest and you never are telling white lies. You're not fudging the truth. You are being scrupulously honest. This is the truth, period. That's what people want to see in leaders. And what's so missing in so many contexts in our current world and why we're so frustrated by our existing leaders. Well, guess what? We need to be the leaders we want to see. And it starts with honesty. Second aspect of a powerful leader that builds their credibility is they're forward looking. They're able to say this is where we can go. They have a compelling vision that inspires, but they're also competent. We look at them and say, okay, I can trust this person. They're credible because they get results, they're good at what they do, and then lastly they're inspiring. These are the four characteristics that they've found again and again and again are the heart of credibility, which again is the foundation of your abilities to lead effectively. Do a quick inventory. How are you doing with your honesty? You absolutely honest period. How are you doing with your forward lookingness, your vision? How are you doing with your competency and how you doing with your ability to inspire? Think about that. Strengths, weaknesses, right? What needs work and always what can you plus 1% today as you incrementally optimize, aggregate and compound all those little distinctions becoming a little bit better day in and day out over time equals magic, credibility, foundation of leadership. Four aspects of it. Let's rock those. Have another awesome day. See ya.
