Micro Class: Soul o2
17 Dec 2025 · 3 min
Brian Johnson uses the airplane oxygen-mask metaphor to argue that self-care comes first. Sleep, nutrition, movement, and spiritual connection aren't selfish. They're how you stay strong enough to help others when things get hard.

Hi, this is Brian. Welcome back to another micro class. This one's on Soul Oxygen. It's inspired by living Forward. Michael Hyatt, Daniel Harkavy. They talk about creating a life plan in their book, right? And part of that is to know what your priorities are. And part of that is to prioritize yourself. Yourself needs to be a high priority for them. Their self care comes right after their commitment to God, right? For me, my self care is a commitment to God and to everyone else. Because I can't give my myself most fully to the world unless I'm actually connected to something higher than myself, which requires me to engage in basic fundamentals, et cetera. They use the great metaphor of an airplane. See, you've heard it before if you've ever been on a plane, right? Welcome. Fasten your seatbelts and in the event that the cabin pressure changes, oxygen masks will come down from the compartment above and, and you put it over your nose and your mouth. And remember, take care of yourself first before you try to help anybody else. Because if you don't have your basic fundamentals dialed in, if you don't have your oxygen in the airplane, and if you don't have your sole oxygen in life when the life pressure destabilizes, right? Unfortunately in life we don't have the little oxygen mask that drops down so we can take care of ourselves, we've got to do it on our own. We've got to honor the fundamentals, you know, eating, moving, sleeping, etc. If we want to be dialed in and give ourselves most fully to the world. So make sure you take care of your soul oxygen before you take care of or try to take care of other people. Prioritize yourself in your overall life plan and see it as a vehicle to be able to give yourself most fully to the world. And remember the fact that when life's pressure changes the most, right? We're going through that turbulence in life. Those are the times when it's most important to make sure that our Soul Oxygen is going through our bodies. And it's unfortunate that too often when we're most challenged is when we most quickly stop doing the things that keep us in the game. I say this all the time, but the higher the level of challenge, the more important it is we dial in these basic fundamentals. Remember Soul Oxygen. Remember to take care of yourself if you want to be able to help others and master the the Turbulence of Life have another awesome day. See ya.
Isn't it a bit odd we went from math to science to history but somehow missed the class on how to live? For some wacky reason, optimal living 101 never made the schedule. Of course, it's too late to go back and change that and you're too busy to read full time to catch up yet. If you're like us, you're all about optimiz your life and actualizing your potential. So imagine this. Imagine having someone read the best books on optimal living and pulling out the big ideas that can truly change your life. You know those sections you asterisks and underline and mark all up? Then imagine that guy me connecting those ideas to other great books and helping you apply them to your life today. Well, that's what I do as something we call Philosophers Notes where I break down each great book into a simple 6 page PDF, 20 minute MP3 and 10 minute Philosopher's Notes TV episode. Then imagine me taking the absolute best big ideas from those great books and sharing them with you in fun, inspiring, super practical optimal living 101 classes on stuff like purpose 101, confidence 101, business 101, meditation 101, that sort of thing. You've got a personal training trainer? I'm kind of like your personal philosopher. Ancient Wisdom plus Modern Science plus Common Sense plus Virtue plus Mastery plus fun. That's what our optimized membership program is all about. We'd love to have you join us.
