You're listening to Optimize with Bryan Johnson. More wisdom in less time. Hi, this is Brian. Welcome back to another micro class. This one's on the three Laws inspired by Drive by Dan Pink. We just talked about autonomy. Now we're going to talk about mastery. Then we're going to talk about purpose. The three aspects of motivation. 3.0. The three laws of mastery. What are they? Well, first of all, let's remember that mastery is one of our key drives. To get better at what we do is an important human drive. Own it. Recognize that. Then know that there are three laws to it. Mastery is a mindset, it is a pain, and it is an asymptote. Asymptote. Love that word. Let's walk through those. It's a mindset. Mastery is a mindset. What does that mean? It means that if you don't think you can get better, if you don't have a growth or incremental mindset, you won't even try to get better if you have a fixed mindset or an entity mindset. Dan talks about Carol Dweck. Check out all of our stuff on her book, Mindset and Self Theories. If your self theory is that you are fixed, you're an entity that cannot be changed, you won't even try to be better. Why would you try to be better? Doesn't make any sense. But if you know you can get better incrementally, little by little, you can compound up to awesome, well, then you have a shot at going for mastery, right? But it starts with the mindset. The second law of mastery is that it's a pain. We want everything to be easy, but mastery is not easy. You need to be willing to stretch out of your comfort zone again. You don't need to go nuts. I say this every single time. You don't need to go crazy. You just need to go a little bit out of your comfort zone, right? Find that flow channel. You're not bored, you're not anxious, but that's not a pleasant state. Living outside of your comfort zone right here is a pain. To do that deliberate, purposeful practice is challenging. Dan talks about all the research around Expertise, right? The 10,000 hours roughly which we talked about in the stuff on peak. Eric Anderson. I'm sorry, Anders Ericsson's research on expert performance. It's a pain. You gotta go here into your discomfort zone if you want to get better. If you're not leaving your comfort zone, you're not getting better, period. Then we have. It's an asymptote Asymptote. Awesome. There we go. We have a straight line and then we have a curved line which is approaching that straight line, but it never quite hits it. There will always be a gap right there. Mastery is an asymptote. You will never actually get to your perceived place of mastery in any individual thing you do or in your overall actualization beautifully. You won't, because you're always going to stretch up your standards, right? So you got to know that mastery is an asymptote. And when you know that and you're willing to show up day in and day out and you don't think you're going to get there and you need to get there on day three, he says, well, then you know what? You might get there on day 3000. And then of course, at that point it's still going to be stretching away from you. And you know that you need to embrace that if you want to continue the path of flow and mastery. So there you go. Mastery's Three Laws. Mindset, Pain Asymptote. Hi, this is Brian.
