Micro Class: The 3 Laws of Mastery

Brian Johnson breaks down three laws of mastery: growth mindset, deliberate uncomfortable practice, and the asymptote (mastery as something you chase but never reach). He draws on Carol Dweck, Dan Pink, and Anders Ericsson's research on how people actually get better at things.

Hi, this is Brian. Welcome back to another micro class. This one's on mastery, the three laws inspired by Drive by Dan Pink. We just talked about autonomy.
Now we're going to talk about mastery.
Then we're going to talk about purpose. The three aspects of motivation.
3.0.
The three laws of mastery. What are they? Well, first of all, let's remember that mastery is one of our key drives. To get better at what we do is an important human drive. Own it. Recognize that. Then know that there are three laws to it. Mastery is a mindset, it is a pain, and it is an asymptote. Asymptote.
Love that word. Let's walk through those.
It's a mindset. Mastery is a mindset. What does that mean? It means that if you don't think you can get better, if you don't have a growth or incremental mindset, you won't even try to get better. Right? If you have a fixed mindset or an entity mindset. Dan talks about Carol Dweck. Check out all of our stuff on her book Mindset and in self Theories. If your self theory is that you are fixed, you're an entity that cannot be changed. You won't even try to be better. Why would you try to be better? It doesn't make any sense. But if you know you can get better incrementally, little by little, you can compound up to awesome, well, then you have a shot at going for mastery, right? But it starts with the mindset. The second law of mastery is that it's a pain. We want everything to be easy, but mastery is not easy. You need to be willing to stretch out of your comfort zone again. You don't need to go nuts. I say this every single time. You don't need to go crazy. You just need to go a little bit out of your comfort zone, right?
Find that flow channel.
You're not bored, you're not anxious, but that's not a pleasant state. Living outside of your comfort zone right here is a pain. To do that deliberate, purposeful practice is challenging. Dan talks about all the research around Expertise, right? The 10,000 hours, roughly, which we talked about in the stuff on peak. Eric Anderson, I'm sorry, Anders Ericsson's research on expert performance. It's a pain. You got to go here into your discomfort zone if you want to get better. If you're not leaving your comfort zone, you're not getting better, period. Then we have. It's an asymptote. Asymptote. Awesome.
There we go.
We have A straight line. And then we have a curved line which is approaching that straight line, but it never quite hits it. There will always be a gap right there. Mastery is an asymptote. You will never actually get to your perceived place of mastery in any individual thing you do or in your overall actualization beautifully.
You won't, because you're always going to.
Stretch up your standards, right? So you got to know that mastery is an asymptote. And when you know that and you're willing to show up day in and day out and you don't think you're going to get there, and you need to get there on day three, he says, well then you know what? You might get there on day 3000.
And then of course, at that point.
It'S still going to be stretching away from you.
And you know that you need to.
Embrace that if you want to continue the path of flow and mastery. So there you go. Mastery's three laws, Mindset, Pain, asymptote.
Hey guys, this is Brian. A lot of people don't know what I do beyond these YouTube videos I put up. So I thought I'd give you a quick tour of our membership platform. Thousands of people have joined us already. 10 bucks a month get access to a ton of stuff that's in addition to what I put up on YouTube for free. So the basic idea is you just watched a micro class. Hope you enjoyed that. I share. I just started doing these micro classes, but I Now share over 50 of these per month. We've shared dozens so far and it's basically a quick class on my absolute favorite stuff across the different domains of optimal living. 2 to 3 maybe 5 minute little micro classes on how to optimize your life. In addition to that, you get access to every single one of our philosopher's notes. We now have over 250 philosopher's notes on some really, really good books. A lot of them in each one of them. You're familiar with the PNTV videos if you've watched many of those. But we also have PDFs and MP3s of our Philosopher's notes. So here's. Let's take a look at what a PDF looks like. This is an example of a Philosopher's note. It's a six page PDF where I basically share some of my favorite thoughts, riff on it, talk about how other teachers say the same things, and give you a nice playful kick in the butt to go out and apply the wisdom that is a philosopher's Note. I record that as an MP3 that you can download as well. And 250 of those. I produce 10 of those at least per month that I share with you in addition to the micro classes. And then you also get access to all of our old classes. We have the five day immersion, reboot habits 101, confidence 101, getting stuff done 101, meditation 101, and then future classes including relationships 101, energy 101, purpose 101, biz 101, goals 101, etc. So there you go. Really blessed to have some extraordinary support and I will share with you where you go to sign up. I'll put a link to this, but basically cruise on over here. You can sign up. And this is the kind of response we've gotten so far from our members. It's pretty neat. I've made more positive changes in my life, my brief membership only three months so far, than I did through years of counseling. Yes. Brian Johnson, you are a rock star. Thank you very much. That's very kind of you.
And.
And I'm making huge strides in optimizing my life as a result of your philosopher's notes and optimal living classes. I spend $19 a month on my gym membership to take care of my body. A mere $10 a month on an optimal living membership is the biggest value and best investment I've ever made in my emotional, mental and spiritual health. Thank you for the incredible work you're doing to inspire us to be rock stars in our own lives. Unbelievably inspiring and humbling. In 24 hours, we received hundreds of extraordinary notes from members around the world. So there you go. That's a quick look at what we're up to. 10 bucks a month. Hope to astonish you. There you go.
