Micro Class - Two Buckets
17 Dec 2025 · 5 min
A short motivational micro-class by Brian Johnson that presents the "Two Buckets" metaphor (inspired by Idan Ravine) to illustrate moment-by-moment choices between growth (shooting into the "good" basket) and safety/avoidance (the "bad" basket). Draws on Maslow's self-actualization idea and offers practical tactics (pre-commitment, bright lines) to favor growth; ends with a brief membership/promo pitch.

You're listening to Optimize with Bryan Johnson. More wisdom in less time. Hi, this is Brian. Welcome back to another micro class. This one is on two buckets. It's inspired by the Hoops Whisperer by Idan Ravine. I mention often that books come back to one word as their theme. Often. Almost every book has a word that I could identify as the word. This book, greatness. Idan Ravine only works with people who are committed to achieving greatness, being the best they can possibly be. As Maslow would say, actualizing their potential. What one can be, one must be. Maslow tells us that's a healthy drive. So Ravine works with these guys, basketball players who want to be great. But he was working with one client of his who just wasn't showing up in a powerful way that demonstrated he was actually committed to it. And he said, look, buddy, there are two baskets. He said, look, if you're committed to greatness, that's cool. If you're not, that's cool too. But let's just be honest about it. And you're telling me you're committed to it. So let's check in. And when you go through your life, you need to make a decision. You're shooting at one of two baskets. You're either shooting at the good basket or where you're shooting at the bad basket. And your life and your destiny is going to be shaped by choosing wisely. So imagine here you are, you've got a little basketball, right? In any given moment, you have a choice. Are you shooting it into that hoop or are you shooting it into that hoop? Abraham Maslow, our little self actualizer here, he says if you want to actualize your potential in any given moment, the way he framed it was you can step forward into growth or you can step back into safety. I say that's plus 1 or minus 1, plus 1 or minus 1, plus one or minus one. At the end of the day, if you went minus however much infinity over here, you can have a rough one. You're probably going to want to check out, numb out, crack open a bottle of wine or six pack or veg out in front of the TV or whatever. But if you step forward into growth, forward into growth, forward into growth, you're going to feel great at the end of that day. You have energy for your family, etc. Good shots, bad shots. Our destiny is determined moment to moment to moment. We only have power in this moment. So that's the question as you step up to take the next shot and do whatever you're gonna do next in your life. Ask yourself which basket am I shooting into? This one or this one? You're not gonna be perfect. We're not saying never shoot in here again. But commit to getting better and do things to kind of block out this basket. You can put a piece of cardboard over that basket. Maybe you unplug your wifi at night so you shooting into the bad basket. Willpower. Scientists call that pre commitment. Make it easy. Bright lines. You can't shoot in here, right? Focus here. Two baskets Greatness Abraham Maslow Stepping forward into growth. Hope you enjoyed. Look forward to sharing more. Have another awesome day. See ya. Hi, this is Brian.
