You're listening to optimize with bryan johnson. More wisdom in less time. Hi, this is Brian. Welcome back to another micro class. This one's on youn Legacy. It's inspired by Legacy by James Kerr. All Blacks, greatest sports team ever. Certainly the greatest rugby team ever. When they start as a new All Black, they are told, your job is to leave this jersey in a better place than when you first put it on. You need to create a legacy. You need to be thinking about future generations. So obviously, the book is all about helping us discover what our legacy is. My question for you is, what is your legacy going to be? What are you committed to? I want to talk about three things when we talk about one sentence. I want to talk about Covey, and I want to talk about Buckminster Fuller to help us get more clarity on what your legacy is. The first one is from a recent note on Drive. We had autonomy, mastery and purpose. Dan Pink said, what's your one sentence? All great leaders he shares with us can summarize their lives in one sentence. Lincoln saved the Union, freed the slaves. Roosevelt led us out of the Depression and won a world war. What's your sentence? Doesn't need to be of that magnitude. It could be. You raised three healthy, vibrant, awesome kids. Fantastic. Great. What is your one sentence? What are you here to do? Stephen Covey has another great way to bring us to this perspective, deeper awareness. The eulogy exercise. Here you are today. Hopefully it's a nice distance in the future. You don't know, though, right? When you are no longer alive. Right. And imagine you died and you get to go and attend your own funeral service. Who says what are people crying? How do they feel about you no longer being on this planet? That's a really powerful way to get more clarity on your legacy. What do you want them to say if they could say anything? Your closest relatives, maybe. Your children, if you have them. Your spouse, if you have one. Your colleagues, the world. What do they say? Think about that. That's a great way to get more clarity on our legacy. Then the third component here, there's a Buckminster Fuller quote that I'm just going to share directly. James tells us, think of Buckminster Fuller. What is my job on the planet? What is it that needs doing that I know something about that probably won't happen unless I take responsibility for it. What is the extra that will make us extraordinary? What's your job with a capital J? Is how Jon Kabat Zinn shared that same wisdom from Buckminster Fuller. What's your job with a capital J. What's not likely to happen unless you get it done, that you know something about that you know you can. You can really contribute. Identify that, get clear on this and know a little bit more about that. Let it evolve. But that's a great way to take the next steps in living. Your having clarity on the legacy you're here to live. Then of course this guy needs to show up and do the work. Our first micro class in the series was to sweep. So let's put a broom in his hand. Remember, humility is the foundation of character, which is what drives the whole show. Let's create a legacy. Give your gifts and greatest service to the world and enjoy the process.
