Hi, this is Brian. Welcome back to Heroic Wisdom Daily. Today's book no Mud, no Lotus by Thich Nhat Hanh. A gentle and profound guide showing that suffering and happiness are intertwined. The hard stuff, the mud is where we grow stronger, kinder and more awake. Check out the notes in the app. We got a bunch of notes on Thich Nhat Hanh's wonderful wisdom. Here's your one minute summary. Suffering is the soil for for joy. Just like a lotus grows from mud, deep growth often comes through hardship without the struggle. The joy isn't as deep. Mindfulness heals the wounds. Acknowledging pain with awareness, breathing and attention lets you hold suffering without being overwhelmed by it. Don't launch the second arrow. We suffer first from what happens and arrow shot and then form our judging, resisting or refusing of the pain. That's the second arrow, right on the same place where you got the first one. Let go of the extra suffering. Compassion is essential. Turning compassion toward yourself and others lets you see suffering as part of life. Not something to defeat, but something to accompany with tenderness. Practice presence and the mantras. Thich Nhat Hanh offers specific breathing exercises, meditation and simple phrases to remind you that suffering and joy are part of the same flower. You don't have to shame your suffering, you can transform it. So what one practice will you engage in today? To just be with your pain and let it plant your next lotus again. Check out the notes. Check out Self Compassion by Kristin Neff as well. Those notes are phenomenal. And remember, no mud, no lotus.
