A short Heroic Plus One podcast by Brian Johnson that reflects on a Rudyard Kipling quote (as cited by John Maxwell) about why people fail to get what they want: either they didn't truly want it or they tried to bargain over the price. The episode prompts listeners to identify their most important goal, examine their commitment and the price they're willing to pay, and then take action. It also points listeners to related plus-ones on moral authority, humility, and persistence.
Hey hero, if you're enjoying these daily plus ones, make sure you head to Heroic us to check out all of the other goodness we have to help you activate your best every day. And now, today's plus one.
Hi, this is Brian. Welcome back to another heroic plus one. In our last plus one, we spent some time soaking our souls in wisdom from Rudyard Kipling's classic poem if. I also shared a link to Michael Caine's beautiful reading of the poem, and right before creating that one, I searched our Heroic app to see if I'd mentioned the if poem before. Somewhat surprisingly, I hadn't, but in the process I did find a brilliant quote from Rudyard Kipling in John Maxwell's leadership in the context of paying the price to achieve your goals, John quotes Kipling, who apparently once said, and I quote, if you don't get what you want, it is either a sign that you did not seriously want it or or that you tried to bargain over the price. Let's slow down and reread that and let it sink in. If you don't get what you want, it is either a sign that you did not seriously want it or that you tried to bargain over the price. How true is that? Now, today's plus one. What do you want? More specifically, what's your current, number one most wildly important goal in your life? Of course, it could be an energy target or a work target or a love target. What is it? Remember, happy people are teleological. They have projects and goals that inspire them. If you don't have one, get one now. If you haven't gotten what you want yet, is it possible that you didn't seriously want it, or that you tried to bargain over the price? If so, check in. Do you really want it and what price are you willing to pay? Get clear, whoop it, etc. And go pay that price today. P.S. years ago, we shared a few other plus ones based on wisdom from John's leadership. Check out these plus ones on moral authority, humility, and the fact that yesterday's home run won't win today's game.
