Brian Johnson breaks down Wayne Dyer's Real Magic: live with purpose, act as if you're already who you want to be, celebrate others' wins, and write down your intentions. The core shift is be→do→have, not the other way around.

Hi, this is Brian. Welcome to Philosopher's Notes tv. Today we're going to take a quick look at Wayne Dyer's great book, Real Magic. As always, we've got the great book, the six page PDF with maybe 10 or more of my favorite big ideas from the book. Dyer writes books that are just packed with big ideas, super fun and easy to write Philosopher's notes on. In fact, he's one of the few teachers on whom I've done three notes. So we've got Real magic that we'll do right now. We've got your erroneous zones and we've got the power of intention. All awesome books. And I could have written more notes on more Dyer books, but stopped at three. And we also did three notes on Joseph Campbell and Esther and Jerry Hicks.
So.
So some of my favorite teachers right there. And I am excited to jump in. The note's got a bunch of ideas. I'm going to focus on a few of my favorites quickly. One of the big ideas behind Real Magic is the idea that we need to really get on purpose and live our lives according to how we can give ourselves most fully to the world and quit worrying about outcomes so much and focus more on who we are and what we're here to do. And as we do that, the outcomes tend to take care of themselves, which is a theme we talk about again and again and again in these notes. But in the note I talk about how Dyer says that have a couple of quotes. Then we've got Marcus Aurelius, one of my favorite teachers, who says the same thing. And then Martin Seligman in his great book Authentic Happiness, says the same thing that we've discovered scientifically, that if you want to have a happy life and, and a truly meaningful life, we've got to discover what we're good at and then how we can give it to the world. So really big idea there that we talk about more in the note. You can check that out. I want to go into more detail on this idea of acting as if. So Dyer really, I've heard the idea of acting as if a lot, but Dyer really kind of brought it home for me. So here's the way he describes it. Imagine your ideal self in whatever form you can imagine that in, whether it's being an extraordinary parent or a creative entrepreneur or a super healthy and vibrant human being or whatever it is that you want to imagine. Right. What's your ideal vision of that version of yourself right now, get a clear sense of that, and then bring it back to this moment. And when you're acting in this moment, act as if you already were that highest vision of yourself. And especially consider that in challenging times. So if you want to be an incredible parent or an incredible spouse or whatever it is when you're finding yourself a little bit stressed out, pause, take a deep breath and say, what would the highest version of myself do in this moment? And then act as if you were that highest version of yourself now. So if you want to get in great shape, you know, the highest version of yourself works out consistently. So when you're finding yourself not wanting to go work out, even though you committed to go into that Persona of your highest version of yourself and then act as if you already were that person, it's a really, really, really, really, really powerful idea. Same thing works as, you know, a creative entrepreneur. Well, how does the greatest entrepreneurial version of yourself act the morning? Do they hop online and let the day kind of fritter away in emails? No, this is a personal thing for me, so I can speak as an authority on it. We do our creative work first.
Right?
I'm doing this right now before I've allowed myself to go online, disciplining myself to create a few of these shows every morning and kind of get ahead, but doing that before, I allow my day to kind of get taken over by reacting. So that would be an example of how I act as if. But think about that. How can you act as if more in your life today, in any of those different domains? It's a really cool idea. We talk about it in the note a little bit more as well. So that's a big idea. Another way to get into real magic is to rejoice in the success of others. We just did the Secrets of the Millionaire Mind. T Harv Eker says the same thing. Anytime you see something that you want, bless it. Whether it's a healthy body that you see in someone else or a healthy relationship or a beautiful car, whatever it is, bless it. You want to rejoice in the success of other people. We don't want to have criticism and envy and jealousy and all those kind of things. It's literally like shutting off the divine flow. We don't want to do that. We talk more about service. How can we serve? How can we serve? How can we serve? It's a huge theme of this book in this note, and we want to be asking ourselves that question often. In the note. I have a little exercise where you can go off on it. For now, we're going to move into an idea of how we can surrender. So Wayne has a great idea, Dr. Dyer, on that. We need to get out of the mode of worrying about how we can achieve and what our outcomes are going to be and get into the process of loving what we're doing. That's how he encourages us to really surrender to love what we're doing so much that there's just this beautiful surrender into that creative process rather than the attachment to the outcomes we want to see when we're attached and we're just exclusively focused on outcomes. It gets in the way of really producing the creative stuff we need to produce in order to even see that as a byproduct of our creative outflow. So really cool. And then I mentioned here one of my favorite ideas from a great book, Spiritual Economics, by Eric Butterworth. He says that the word prosperity, when we think about having prosperity in our lives, he traces it back to the root of the word, which literally means to go forward. Hopefully, that's what prosperity means. It's not about how much we've accumulated. It's about how optimistically, how hopefully we're moving forward in our lives. That's the true definition of prosperity, which I just love. So the question for us is, how can we move forward with hope in everything that we're doing? That's prosperity. And the irony is, or the reality, as I should say, that, that as we do that prosperity in all of its physical, material forms basically chases after us. It's a pretty good deal. And then I have one more idea here on this or sub idea on this big idea. George Leonard, in his great book Mastery, that we're going to be doing pretty soon that we profile in the hundred, talks about the fact that the master is the one who so loves what they're doing, that what they do and who they are are kind of united. And they're so passionate about taking the next step that they actually hope that for every mile they walk toward their destination, their destination becomes two miles further away. Can you imagine that? So most of the time we're trying to get to our destination. We're doing everything we can to take shortcuts and get there quickly. George Leonard says the master is the one who's so committed to their practice. They love what they do so much that they aren't going after the destination for the sake of the destination. They actually love what they do so much, they hope the destination is always further away. That's so Cool. And that's a good sign that we have a life on purpose. We love what we're doing so much. We hope the journey never ends. Really cool idea. So Dyer also talks about the idea of removing all disbelief. And he has a great little game you can play where anytime you find yourself feeling scarcity or doubt, you literally see the thought come into your mind and say, next.
Right?
So you see the little negative gremlin thought float in. Just say, next.
Right.
Next thought. Next thought. Ground ourselves in the positivity of prosperity, moving forward hopefully, and really cleansing our consciousness of all those little negative things. I talked about in the note, how some of the things that I wanted to remove from my consciousness, including criticism and included criticism, blame, gossip, complaining, comparing and seeing those things and literally saying, no, no, no, let's get that out of my consciousness and rewire in a different way. So we're obviously going through this super quickly, as we tend to do, but another couple really good ideas. He talks about the fact that we want to commit our ideals to paper. So if you haven't started journaling yet, I've got my journal with me at all times. If you haven't started journaling yet, what are you waiting for? It's a great process. And as you do it, as you create an intention inventory that Wayne Dyer talks about, think about the be, do, and have. Oftentimes people say, what do you want to be? What do you want to do? What do you want to have? I think we should focus more on the be. Who do we want to be? What kind of person do we want to be in the world? And then what do we need to do in order to be that person? So if you want to be this enlightened person, this wonderful parent, what do you need to do? And then the things that you want to have in your life flow from that being and that doing. But too often we get stuck in the having all the things we want. The fast car and the big house and all that stuff. And we forget the being and the doing that produces those actual outcomes. So we can talk about that for a whole week. But that's a quick look at Wayne Dyer's real magic. Hope you enjoyed and as always, have an awesome day and look forward to sharing more with you soon. See ya.
