Brian Johnson relaunches his daily Plus One series after 18 months away. He tells how he and Alexandra divorced before they married, got engaged twice, and wed while washing dishes. After 19 years together, he distinguishes between falling in love and standing in love through everyday practice.

Hi, this is Brian. Welcome back to the Heroic Plus Ones. I am thrilled to be back. Let's get to work. Alexandra and I got divorced before we got married. True story. As we discuss in Love 101— check out that old school class— and more recently in the notes on The Five Love Languages— check out those notes— we fell in love on our first date and got engaged within a year. And we ended our engagement midway through my little sabbatical year in Bali when I created the first 100 notes 17 years ago. Then almost 18 years ago now. Then we got back together. Now, the first time we got engaged, it was super romantic and checked pretty much all the boxes for passionate awesomeness. The second time we got engaged, the one that stuck. Well, that one was decidedly less romantic and considerably more effective. We decided to get married while washing the dishes. Literally, we were doing the dishes. I can remember it like it was yesterday. I got tears in my eyes typing that. And having just celebrated our 19 years together anniversary, I can say that was a wise decision. As Leo Buscaglia and all the great relationship experts say, it's easy to fall in love. It's much more challenging to stand in love. Now, I share that story in this Plus One because that's how I feel as I relaunch the Plus One series. I took about 18 months off doing these Plus Ones as we shared other types of daily content, and I've really missed sharing stories about my family and my imperfect attempts to practice my philosophy while helping you do the same. Now, I can tell you how excited I am to see if I can create a new streak That takes us from this Plus One number 1,989 to Plus One number 11,000+ in 2051, but I'll skip that and simply say, I'm back. I look forward to doing some Plus One philosophical dishes together in the days and weeks and months and, Deo Volente, years and decades ahead. It is day one, we are all in, let's go hero!
