Hi, this is Ryan. Welcome back to another heroic one. I typed this Flight number 1059 from San Diego to Austin. The flight was delayed by half an hour or so. Then we sat on the Runway for an extra 15 minutes or so, which was awesome. Why? Because it gave me an opportunity to share the whole you know how long this trip would have taken a hundred years ago. Wisdom without an ordinary when she asked for the 10th time, how much longer until we take off? Now? Other than a one night trip to the hotel to give mommy a little time by herself, this is the first big trip the three of us have taken by ourselves. Emerson and I have had a bunch of boys only adventures and it was great to be able to travel with the big girl as well. She's awesome. So in our last plus one we talked about our micro moments of Austin with Dante. As you may recall, after celebrating his one on one basketball skills, I made fun of myself and how small I am compared to Arturis Karna Chovas who runs the Bulls. I literally look like a little Lego minifigure standing next to him. Six, eight. No joke. Check it out again. If you haven't laughed with me and at me, you need to check out this picture. No to Lego minifigures are in my mind because Emerson traveled with a Ninjago guy in his pocket. Eleanor's book bag was stuffed with her stuffies. Now today I want to chat about what the kids and I saw after we checked in and created another micro moment of awesome with the lady who helped us do that as I sipped my coffee. I am not dumping that out before we go through tsa, folks. We saw a blind man walking by himself. He had his cane, as you'd expect.
And.
And yes, I got goosebumps and tears in my eyes as I started to type this. As he navigated with his cane, he was also holding his smartphone up in front of him with the camera pointed in the direction he was headed. He had headphones on and it was clear that he was using an app to navigate his way through the busy airport to find his way to the TSA line. Now, it was humbling and inspiring to watch him. I told the kids to check him out. I explained what he was doing and how he was doing it, celebrating him and his ability to navigate the airport on his own. Then I told them about the app and to imagine all the anonymous heroes who created the app he was using to navigate his way around the airport and how hard they must have worked to create something so extraordinary. Then the most amazing thing happened right as he was navigating his way to the back of the TSA line, a man put his hand on the blind man's back and led him through the most efficient pathway through the line while all the other people in line helped him get by. Got tears in my eyes typing that and goosebumps saying it. It was such a simple but such a powerful reminder of the goodness of human beings. In a world in which so much anger and polarization can permeate our society, we must remember our essential goodness. We must, as Mr. Rogers mom told him when he was a little boy, see the helpers. And we must not only see the kind human beings helping others, we must point those people out to our kids. And of course, we must be those humbly heroic helpers. And that's today's plus one. As I told my beautiful kids, I want to make sure you are the ones helping people whenever you see someone in need. When, as always, all day, every day. Especially today.
