17 Dec 2025 · 2 min
This short podcast excerpt (Heroic +1 #1,940) features Brian Johnson (with Michael Balchan briefly) using the Golden Buddha parable to illustrate personal growth: that beneath habits, stories, and ‘mud’ there is a valuable, heroic self. Johnson references journaling and Heroic resources, urging listeners to "chip away at what's in the way" to reveal their true potential.

Hi, this is Brian. Welcome back to another heroic one. In our last several plus ones, we've been chatting about the fact that you are the hero we've been waiting for. Fun fact in my quick AM journaling recently I've been writing this down, literally writing it down in my journal. You are the hero we've been waiting for. Welcome to your training platform. Here's the ancient wisdom, modern science and practical tools you need to move from theory to to practice to mastery to activate your heroic potential so we can change the world together. Note it's also on my whiteboard. That's a little way we're looking at how to frame up what heroic is. You are the hero we've been waiting for. Now, as you may recall, I told you about some lost sleep noodling some copy for the plus ones we released recently. We talked about wisdom from the great spiritual teacher Eric Butterworth and his buddy Steve Superman. But we haven't chatted about the Golden Buddha yet. So let's do that now. We've actually talked about the Golden Buddha more than once. I linked to a couple plus ones in which I've referenced these stories. Check that out in the app. As you may recall, once upon a time there was a huge golden Buddha. Monks were afraid that an invading army would destroy it, so they covered it in mud and other stuff so it looked worthless. And their trick worked. The invading army left their precious Golden Buddha alone. Unfortunately, the trick worked too well. By the time the army left, no one remembered the fact that under that mud and junk was a golden Buddha. It wasn't until hundreds of years later that when moving, the huge statue of, a little chunk of junk fell off. Revealing the gold underneath that Buddha statue is worth a crazy amount. And that golden Buddha is you and me and all of us underneath. All those stories we've told ourselves and all those less than awesome habits we've allowed ourselves to develop is a divinely inspired heroic version of us.
We.
We just need to chip away at what's in the way. When shall we get to work? I'm thinking all day, every day, especially today.
