What do I do when a creative idea calls me in a new direction? - with Steven Pressfield on Optimize Coach
17 Dec 2025 · 6 min
Transcript of a live Optimize Coach coaching session (July 2, 2021 upload) in which Jessica — an entrepreneur in mental health/spiritual self-actualization who runs Recovery Warriors/True Warrior — describes a creative impulse to bring a comedic sketch character (“Charlie,” a chronically depressed vampire) into public work. Steven Pressfield diagnoses the reluctance as 'Resistance', encourages her to pursue the character, and advises that creative impulses (the muse) reveal their meaning over time. The session covers identity tensions, audience reaction concerns, and symbolic imagery (key, bats, androgyny).

I've created two companies. One is Recovery warriors and True Warrior. So I've been able over the past nine years to kind of create this Persona as a woman who's in the mental health industry and spiritual self actualization. And then there's this part of me that's having this creative uprising of a. I also do improv comedy just for fun of this character, this sketch character called Charlie. And he's a chronically depressed vampire. Like, I've been, like, playing around with him for the whole pandemic and he's just, like, so amusing. As in my muse just doesn't stop. Like, things that Charlie says are just always coming forth. But I feel like there's this Persona that I have online and just in this world. And I'm also pivoting now and doing another podcast that feels really ripe. And then I'm scared to kind of bring Charlie out into the world because, like, he's kind of ugly. Like, he kind of talks weird and he's not very, like, I don't know, I feel like there's this just creative dichotomy within me and I don't know how much to give Charlie, like, the light of day and just have him more as like a fun. Like, I just love him. He has so much. I think people would like him, but I also feel like he's just so. Like, if people were to go on my social media page and I'd be like, what? Like, this guy interview me? Like, I'm confused. I'm confused.
Well, I would say right away that your reluctance to go with Charlie. Did you say? Is that what it is?
Yeah. Charlie, the chronically depressed vampire is.
It's classic resistance with a capital R. And I would say, definitely do it. You know, this is a live, living, great thing inside you. And all I could, from my own experience, every time I have that voice in my head that nobody's going to like this, it's way out of bounds. It's too crazy. Nobody's going to care about it. I'm going to look stupid, I'm going to make a fool of myself. Those are the things in my experience that work the best. And so, and particularly I think in anything that's kind of comic, that's really true. Because you're. You're really taking a chance there, right? What if. You know so. And it's very, very scary. My hat's off to you for even thinking about it, but I would definitely encourage you to go for it. This is. When we talk about the muse, this is coming from some deep place inside you. You know, I don't know where it is or what it's all about, but it will reveal itself, you know, over time. If you could project yourself 10 years in the future, you'll have a very clear, looking backwards sense of what this was all about, you know, So I think, you know, if I were you, I would be really grateful that this is flowing through you now. This is a gift from another dimension of reality. And I would attach. Takes guts when it's coming like that. It takes tremendous guts to go ahead and do it. So whatever you need to do to summon those guts, go for it. I think it's great. I think it's really great that you got it. God bless.
Thank you. Okay. And so then, with, like, timing, if I'm launching something else in my career, do you think it's because there's also, like, my livelihoods attached more to the career that I've set and that. Do you think it's just. Yes. And, like, trying to do both at the same time or when you have a creative project that's really coming through you, you really just give that your all.
I think sometimes we're afraid we'll alienate people if we show another side of ourselves. But in fact, usually I think they really like it. You know, they go, wow, where did that come from? You know? And Jessica, you know, I knew her as person A, and now she's as person B. And I think people. You'll be surprised, I think, by how positive people are. Is there some symbolism to the key that you're wearing around your neck?
It says, warrior on was gifted to me. Yeah.
Well, maybe there's some connection there between, you know, a key opens doors, right?
Yeah.
Cool.
Thank you for the vote of confidence.
What are your dreams saying about this?
Um, we've actually had my analysts, some weird ones of, like, because I think there's something weird about me posing as a male. Like, like, because then you go to my social media, like, wait, because I'll be dressed as a guy and, like, wearing it, like, a wig and, like, with makeup, like, vampire makeup. So I have had some kind of androgynous things where it's, like, female, male, where it's like, A androgynous person. I think that's. We've talked like. And then I. I've also had bats in my dreams. Charlie's like come out.
I'll say again that I think, like, when things are coming from such a deep source, I think they know a lot more than we do. You know, we try to analyze it with our own little minds, you know, our own conscious minds. And mainly we tend to be think reductively. Right. Oh, this is wrong. Oh, this is, you know, too big, you know. But there's a greater wisdom in that. And of course, we never know what it is until we get it out there, you know. So whatever encouragement I can give you to go for it, I want to give you that.
Thank you. I'll take it.
All right.
An honor.
Good luck. God bless you. Let me know.
