Short explainer by Kyle Balmer criticizing a Goldman Sachs chart that purportedly shows ChatGPT traffic declining in May 2024. The speaker argues the apparent drop is an artifact: ChatGPT changed its URL from chat.openai.com to chatgpt.com (with redirects), so Goldman Sachs' site-traffic measurement missed the redirected traffic; according to the speaker, actual traffic increased during the period.

Is chatgpt really dying? You might have seen this graph going around. It's from Goldman Sachs who recently did some research showing that ChatGPT is in decline. For proof, they're using the number of monthly visits to the ChatGPT website. And you can see it drops off in May 2024. And based on this, Goldman Sachs, the bank is saying, well, ChatGPT is less popular. People are kind of getting bored of AI. The thing is, Goldman Sachs and this is a huge company with a big research department, they basically messed up here. What happened is ChatGPT changed their website address. It used to be chat.OpenAI.com that's how you access ChatGPT. But now it's directly@chatgpt.com that is why we see this drop off in traffic, because the previous site no longer exists. It redirects to chatgpt.com yet Goldman Sachs have managed to mess this up and publish this chart, which is basically wrong. This is really embarrassing and I'm sure the researchers have gotten a lot of trouble for this. In reality, the traffic has actually increased to ChatGPT in this period.
