In this episode of Conscious Design, host Ian Peterman interviews Chris Stern, CEO and co‑founder of CarbiCrete, about the company’s carbon‑negative concrete technology. Stern explains how his background in solar and a chance encounter with researchers at McGill led to the discovery that steel‑slag, an abundant industrial by‑product, can replace cement as the binder in concrete when cured with captured CO₂. The process eliminates the high‑emission cement step, repurposes two waste streams (steel slag and biogenic CO₂ from ethanol fermentation), and creates a dry‑cast masonry product that can be as strong or stronger than traditional concrete, with higher strength capturing more CO₂. Stern describes the product line (dry‑cast masonry, precast elements, and future ready‑mix), the licensing model that lets existing concrete plants adopt the technology by swapping only the curing system for a hermetic CO₂‑rich environment, and the scaling strategy of locating licensees near steel plants to minimize transport. He shares market reception—lower material cost, comparable capex, and growing interest— and outlines long‑term goals: utilizing all available steel slag to produce up to two billion tonnes of carbon‑negative concrete per year, a fraction of the 30 billion tonnes of global concrete production but a significant climate‑impact contribution. The interview also touches on lifecycle analysis confirming net negative emissions, the simplicity of the solution compared to other carbon‑capture approaches, and practical details for contacting CarbiCrete.
