In this Conscious Design interview, host Ian Peterman speaks with Marte Cazarez, co‑founder of Desserto, a Mexican startup that converts cactus into a leather‑like biopolymer. Marte recounts how he and partner Adrian López Velarde met in Taiwan, later pursued careers in fashion, automotive, and other industries, and realized the need for a truly sustainable material. After quitting their jobs, they spent over two years researching plants, ultimately selecting Opuntia ficus‑indica (prickly pear) for its low water and chemical requirements, high biomass, and CO₂ sequestration. They extracted a cactus protein to create a bio‑resin that can replace polyurethane or PVC, producing a biodegradable, recyclable material. Since the 2019 launch, Desserto has released four generations of the material, increasing organic content from 28% carbon to 88% and aiming for 100% cactus‑based composition. The material is fully customizable—elasticity, density, thickness, color, texture—allowing use across fashion, footwear, furniture, automotive interiors, aeronautics, sports equipment, and more. Marte discusses sustainability benefits (water‑negative, carbon‑negative, biodegradability), the challenges of scaling production, logistics (currently 90% export from Mexico, plans for regional warehouses and local cultivation), and the importance of industry adoption. He emphasizes that the material is a tool; real impact depends on brands and consumers embracing it. Future goals include achieving 100% organic content, expanding cultivation worldwide, reducing logistics footprints, and continuing to develop new applications while maintaining quality, performance, and scalability.
