Three MIT students created a pencil with seeds embedded in the eraser end. Plant it when it gets too short to use and it grows into a tree or herb. The speaker found it in 2013 on Kickstarter as a rare concrete example of what sustainability actually means.

The idea originates from MIT in Boston, where 3 young students came up with the idea of a pencil you can plant. They put it on Kickstarter.com, the crowdfunding site, where I noticed it and thought it was a great idea because back then in 2013, everyone was talking about sustainability, but no one could really put words to what that meant. And I thought it was a great product to illustrate what sustainability was all about.
