Seaweed contains a natural polymer already used in ice cream, toothpaste, and beer as a gelling agent. Now the same compound is being turned into biodegradable plastic, making seaweed a real alternative to conventional plastics.

Seaweed is full of potential. There is an industry dedicated to cultivating seaweed for its gelling properties. So you may unknowingly be consuming seaweed in your ice cream. It's in your toothpaste. It's in your facial cream. Sometimes seaweed is used as a foaming stabilizing agent in beer or coffee. There's this ingredient That comes from seaweed that has this natural gelling property, and there's a whole commercial industry dedicated to cultivating and then processing seaweed to take advantage of that. And that's the same component I was inspired by. We now use the natural polymer, that gelling quality of seaweed, to create replacements for plastic.
