A packaging designer explains why they created seaweed-based alternatives to plastic. Packaging accounts for nearly 50% of plastic use, and they wanted to eliminate it after seeing ocean damage firsthand.
Chapters
I come from the design world and was working with brands to build their packaging systems. So I came into contact with a lot of plastic and also grew up in California and love the ocean. So I felt a sense of personal responsibility. The environment isn't a backdrop. We're a part of the environment, we're a part of nature, and we can't be perpetuating waste and designing systems that don't make sense. So I was drawn to this problem from a sense of personal responsibility. And also just kind of disgust. So plastic is gross. It can be really gross. And I think that's kind of a universal feeling. And so why haven't we been able to design plastic out of so many systems and in packaging in particular, because that represents nearly 50% of all the plastic that's used?
