The creator of Gob earplugs was inspired by his mother's hearing loss and his fiancé's need for better ear protection in a hardcore band. He realized conventional earplugs are petroleum-based and inadequate, so he built a mycelium alternative instead.

The idea of Gob was just my use of earplugs. My mom lost her hearing and she found out that it could have been prevented. And my fiancé started a hardcore band. I just really went through earplugs like it was nobody's business and just had an aha moment right then where I looked at them and I was like, oh, I've never thought about how bad these are. Recognizing that there wasn't a better alternative really that was completely free of petroleum and discovered, all right, this is a huge problem. This is a huge opportunity. I should probably try and fix this problem. And so that's how it came about. You might think like, oh, mycelium-based earplugs, that's really random until you hear my career trajectory. Then you're like, oh, that also makes sense.
