In this raw, first‑person monologue, Jacob Fuchs reflects on his current situation—six months sober, newly divorced, and alone on a cruise ship. He uses a video‑game metaphor to explore why a life without challenges feels empty, arguing that difficulty, loss, and pain are necessary to give meaning to joy, love, forgiveness, and gratitude. He questions whether his present circumstances are a failure or simply a harder level of the game he never chose, concluding that he cannot reload a previous save and must learn to play the level he’s on, seeking purpose amid hardship.

I'm 6 months sober, newly divorced, and currently sitting on a cruise ship wondering if coming here was a terrible fucking idea. I'm surrounded by beautiful people, unlimited food, parties, and I've spent a good chunk of time alone in my room grieving the life I burnt down, which got me thinking about something weird. Imagine you could design a video game where you could live any life you wanted. First, you'd obviously make yourself rich, famous, good-looking, everybody loves you. You get the girl, you get the house, you win every time. Sounds fucking awesome. How long would you actually play that game? A week? Eventually winning every single time would just get boring. You'd add some difficulty. Maybe you lose some money. Maybe somebody breaks your heart. Maybe you fail. And eventually you make the game hard enough that you could actually lose, because suddenly winning would mean something again. And if you kept turning up the difficulty, eventually you'd probably create a life where you could feel real pain, loss, addiction, heartbreak. Because without those things, could you ever really understand joy, love, forgiveness, or gratitude? And that's the thought. I can't get it out of my head sitting here. What if this isn't the part of my life where everything went wrong? What if this is It's just the part where the game got really fucking hard. Maybe 6 months sober, divorced, sitting alone on a cruise ship isn't exactly the level I would have selected. But I'm here. Can't reload the old save. So I guess I better figure out how to play the level I'm on.
