Jacqueline Elliott argues that team members often value personal recognition over material rewards. Leaders who spend time with employees and offer public praise see better results than those handing out watches or vacations. Feeling part of a family and having access to leadership matters more.

Sometimes we try to give our teams spiffs or reward them for doing a good job. Recognition is unbelievable and it's great to do it in public, but sometimes. Some people love watches, some people like vacations, some people just want time with you. That's a very valuable lesson that we learned as leaders that we were trying to get our team spiffs and money and things like that. And when we asked what is it that you really, really, really want? I just want to go to dinner with you and Andy. They said over thousands of DOL, 10, 15, 20 thousand dollar watch. You just want a dinner to spend time with us. That's pretty crazy, isn't it? The reason why it's crazy is because we have that heart and they look up to us not only as in business but in family. Because we try to give them and we're not perfect by any means. We give them our real us and we value them and we let them know how important they are to us and we grow together as a family.
