BUILT for Impact Ep. 35: How to Build Self-Belief and Confidence Before You See Results

Jake Burhans explains how to build self-belief before you have proof of success, using his Believe-Behave-Become model. Visualization in relaxed states rewires your self-image, and beliefs act as filters that shape what you perceive. Feeling delusional while building something new is normal, he says, and courage means acting despite fear.

Here's something I keep coming back to, right? Nobody is going to believe in you before you believe in yourself. It took me so long to understand that, and I'm not here to just hype you up and be motivational. That's just literally how it works. If you wait for someone, a partner, a parent, a client, an audience to come in on a horse, your knight in shining armor, to hand you the belief that you're ready to do it on your own, you're gonna be waiting forever. Okay? When you first try to believe in yourself, really believe in yourself before there's any proof, it does feel a little crazy. That's the point. It feels delusional. Like you're lying to yourself, but you gotta be it in your head first. I want to talk about that today— self-belief, confidence, courage, faith— and why all of it has to come before the evidence shows up, not after. Welcome back to the Built for Impact Podcast. I'm Jake Burhans, and this is the podcast where inner peace meets high performance and where building your dream life starts from the inside out. So quick context, Built Framework. We talk a lot about your nervous system and your identity and your behavior, right? How your nervous system runs your identity and your identity runs your behavior ultimately. So yeah, just as a, as a point there, underlying the Built Framework is nervous system regulation and identity conditioning. And you can kind of wrap those two things up into what people would call your subconscious mind, your sub— unconscious conditioning, those 95% of your patterns that run below your conscious awareness. But today I want to talk about self-belief, and I'm not talking about screaming affirmations in the mirror, right? We're talking about the inner image you carry of yourself when no one's looking. Like, what do you truly believe about yourself? It's not enough to just say, I'm confident, I'm a millionaire, I'm this, I'm that. That's not going to do anything. You need to truly believe it to your core, and it takes a lot of different traits, you know, faith, courage, persistence. Confidence, all those things. So the first thing is that the trap here of someone wanting to be successful in something is that we're waiting for proof to happen before we have belief. That's never gonna happen. Like, think about this. I talked about this before. Be, do, have. You have to be the thing first. And I have my own framework, which is believe, behave, become, which is basically like, you have to believe that it's possible in your head first. It starts in your head, guys. Doesn't start out there. Like, you wanna start a business, you wanna be the regulated entrepreneur. For the high performer that's not running around like a chicken with their head cut off, you need to be it in your head first. That's why visualization is so powerful, but be that person. You gotta believe that it's possible in your head. And then you gotta behave like that person. You have to act like them. You wake up and you're not rushing around and you feel grateful and you, and you are optimistic and there's a fire at work and you're not reacting because you're regulated. You gotta behave like that person. And then you will become that person. Okay? Believe, behave, become. But we can't wait for proof. We gotta wake up and be confident. We gotta believe in ourself. Confidence is cultivated within right now. I know that people say confidence comes from doing things, which is true. You do things and you gain confidence, but there's that spark that starts everything. You gotta have that spark in you that you believe in yourself, right? You crush that inner voice, that little inner voice that says, no, don't do it. That wants to keep you in the familiar. Which we know, what is that inner voice? That's just your nervous system trying to keep you in the familiar because familiar is safe. It doesn't want you to go into the unfamiliar. Unfamiliar is unsafe. So when the little voice comes up, we just don't even pay any mind to it. We just let it go. The top performers in the world, tennis players, athletes, military ops, surgeons, speakers, they all have those thoughts too. Guess what? They all have the thoughts, but they don't pay any mind to them. I was watching a video from, um, Novak Djokovic, the famous tennis player talking about it. He's like, on the court, if I listen to those thoughts, I'm toast, right? My success relies upon my ability to observe those thoughts, let them go, and just get back to what's present in the tennis match. Same thing with us when we're doing anything. So again, awareness— and we talk about Bill's awareness of those thoughts and letting them go— is going to help us cultivate confidence and belief. Um, another thing is visualizations. Doing your visualizations in the morning when you are in those slower brainwave states and your analytical mind is offline, you can more get into the feeling of what does it feel like to be this version of myself? Whatever those 3 words are, calm, cool, and collected, charismatic, confident, and caring, rich, abundant, peaceful, whatever your 3 words are, start to wire into your brain those patterns. That, that's how you're gonna build confidence. 'Cause you, confidence comes from your self-image, really how you see yourself. And we can rewire that through visualization. And part of it is just belief in yourself. You just have belief. You have faith that it's gonna work, right? Blind faith. It's just blind faith. You have to believe in some sort of higher power. I'm not saying which God or whatever, but like, you have to believe that there's a force greater than us that created this universe because we're just a speck in the universe. And that force is a loving force and it's a guiding force and it's going to, everything's gonna work out for you because everything has worked out for you up to this point. 110% of the time, everything has always worked out. How is that possible? Because something is guiding you. So you gotta have some courage to jump out and pursue what you wanna pursue, right? Whatever that kindling is in your heart that you want to do, go do it. Success is doing what you were put on this earth to do. So have the faith that you will be supported. Take the leap of faith, go after it, chase your dreams, do the things. That's where it comes from though. It comes from a, a deep desire in your heart and knowing. I think that's also where confidence comes from. Confidence comes from knowing that this is what you were meant to do. And you don't really care what people think. You stop caring about what people think, but overall understand that it comes from within first. Secondly, just talking about beliefs. I talk about this in Built, but beliefs are filters, right? Basically like an event has happened, we responded in a certain way, and over time that event happens enough and we, we respond in that certain way enough, we believe that that's just the way it is, right? We go in and we're anxious before a sales call, and then we have the thought that, oh my God, I'm not that good at sales. And then we do that over the course of 3 or 4 months and we just believe that We always get anxiety before sales calls because we're not good at sales. That's just a belief that we formed. It's not the actual reality of the world, but now the belief is acting as a filter. So when you go in to make your sales calls, your, your brain is just filtering for anything it can find to support the belief that you're anxious and not good at sales. So again, our beliefs are filters, not facts, and our brain is scanning for what we already believe. That's what it does. It's— if you look up predictive processing, it's a prediction machine based on what we believe. It's going to constantly be scanning for evidence to support that. So we want to be able to, we want to start to install new beliefs and we can do that through visualization, but however we need to do that is going to help us perceive our reality differently. So believing that it is possible, believing that you are meant to do this, you know, believing that it can happen, that you are the one, that you are chosen, that you can do it, all those things. And you tell yourself something enough and you begin to believe it. Courage and faith are the bridge, like I said. You don't need confidence to start. You need courage. You need courage, right? Courage is feeling the fear and doing it anyways. Then you have to have faith that it's going to happen, that over time you're going to figure it out. Have faith in yourself. If you can't have faith in yourself, have faith in something greater that's guiding you, that's supported you up to this point in your life and has never allowed you to truly fail, right? Like, yeah, you fail, but you're still here, right? Like, you're not dead. Like, you've always found a way to make it. I had to take a leap when I made this Build thing. No one told me that I'd be ready to start Build for Impact. I just decided, and I was waiting for someone to tell me, oh, when I get to this point in the business, I had all these limiting beliefs about I had to make this amount of money. I had to get to this point in the business before I could do it. And it was all just garbage. It was all garbage. So understand that you are not delusional. You're, you're right on track. It's supposed to be delusional. That's how anyone who's ever done anything, there are people like, you're crazy, you're crazy, you're crazy until they're not. Until it works. And then they're like, oh my gosh, you're amazing. It's like, screw you. Never believed me. So understand that confidence can be cultivated from within by, by believing in yourself. And then it's going to be compounded over time as you have the courage to act and do those things. So as Dr. Joe Dispenza says, your personality creates your personal reality. And your personality is how you think, act, and feel. Okay. We want to cultivate the ways of thinking, feeling, and acting that are in alignment with our new self. So for this week, I want you to ask yourself, where in your life are you waiting for proof before you do something? Where are you waiting for proof? Because if we're waiting for proof, we're gonna wait in our whole dang life. All right. Self-belief, confidence, courage, faith. They are not separate things. They are the stages of shifting internally. And every one of them has to come before the evidence, not after. Okay. Self-belief, confidence, courage, faith. They come before the evidence, folks. You're growing the tree. You gotta plant the roots before you see the fruit. You gotta plant the roots. You gotta grow the shoot, which is the middle of the tree, and then you get the fruit. So you gotta be for a long time. You gotta do for a long time before it even shows up. But you gotta have that courage, that faith, that inner belief, that drive. You gotta feel it in your heart. You gotta go get it. All right. If you're not in the Built for Impact community, get in there. A lot of free resources to help you build from peace instead of pressure. Link is in the bio.
