Jake Burhans argues that hard work alone doesn't guarantee success. You need to do the right tasks that actually move the needle toward your goals. Swapping frantic energy for calm focus helps you identify what actually matters.

If hard work was the answer, then the donkey would be the owner of the farm. I was always the kid grinding, hustling, working extremely hard because I thought that was what you needed to do to be successful. You need to force, you need to push, you need to hustle, you need to grind. But the world doesn't reward hard work, it rewards doing the right things that lead to the result that you want. You could want big biceps and then work out your legs all day long. Doesn't matter how hard you work out your legs, you're never going to get big biceps. I found that if I could relax some of that frantic pressure-based energy and replace it with a calm laser-like focus, I could actually get way more done during the day because I was able to think more clearly and actually understand what needed to get done to move the needle. So next time you're running around like a chicken with your head cut off, I want you to ask yourself, is what I'm doing actually moving the needle?
