This is how you know your thoughts cause your suffering. Have you ever been completely caught up in your head thinking about something, like some potential situation that hasn't happened yet, and you're just worrying about it in your mind, and it's just making you feel terrible, making you feel anxious? And then at one point you forget about what you were thinking about, and then all of a sudden you're— you feel so much more at peace. You're like, what was I just even thinking about? What was I just even worrying about? You don't even remember, and your body returns to this peaceful state. Why? Because that thought was causing your suffering. You were lost in it. It was causing your anxiety because the negative thought came in and you couldn't observe it and let it go. Letting go of your thoughts and your emotions is the key to your inner peace.
