Jake Burhans uses a glass pond metaphor to explain how thoughts and emotions create ripples in your mind. Instead of fighting the disturbance, he says to watch the ripples settle on their own. Forcing them to calm only makes things worse.

I want you to think about thoughts coming into your mind like pebbles being thrown into your pond. Your internal state of being is like a glass pond. When you have a disturbing thought, a negative thought, a negative emotion— anger, frustration, sadness— that's like someone throwing a rock or a pebble into your pond. How do you resolve the disturbance? You have to let the ripples calm down on their own. If you're ripping over there in your boat trying to fix the ripples, what happens? More disturbance to the pond. So understand, your internal state of being is like a glass pond. Anytime a thought or an emotion comes in Let it be, and the ripples will calm down on their own.
