Jake Burhans explains why desperation shuts down your prefrontal cortex and kills problem-solving, while inspiration pulls you toward consistent action. Ask yourself each day: am I acting from desperation or inspiration?
Chapters
The difference between acting from inspiration and desperation, and why desperation is killing your productivity. Acting from desperation is a frantic, pressure-based, stress-based mode of doing anything. You're really trying to get somewhere, right? You might feel like you're not enough and you really got to accomplish this thing, right? It's a desperate action, it's a frantic action. And the dangerous part about this is when we're acting in desperation, our system is in a survival mode, which means less activity is in the prefrontal cortex, which is where you can actually think and problem solve and come up with the best solution. Acting from inspiration means we're doing it because we like to. We feel inspired, right? It's this pull in the direction instead of this push. Desperation is like you're just getting shoved from behind and you can barely keep up. Inspiration is like the strong magnet. It's pulling you forward and you get up every single day because you want to do it, because you love to do it, because you feel inspired and you want to contribute and you want to help society and you want to build this thing. It's like this fire in your heart and you only know if you know, right? If you're inspired about something, you get it, you get up and there is no balance. You just want to go, go, go, go, go. But it's a good go, go, go, go, go. So when you wake up tomorrow, I want you to ask yourself, am I acting from desperation or inspiration? Inspiration is going to be your key to sustainable success.
