Jake Burhans argues that personal change requires cognitive diffusion: recognizing you're not your thoughts or emotions, but the awareness observing them. This mental space lets you see limiting beliefs as habits, not flaws, and choose new responses instead. Without this awareness of your existing mental patterns, discipline and motivation alone won't work.

So I need you to understand this one fundamental component of how we change as human beings, okay? If you don't understand this, everything else feels like an uphill battle. It's extremely difficult. You think you need a lot of discipline, a lot of motivation, a lot of willpower. Uh, this is the beginning of it all, and it's really that you are not your thoughts or your emotions. You are the awareness that observes them. So they call this cognitive diffusion. It basically means not being caught up in the mental content, the thoughts, the emotions, And when you can do that, when you can create separation between your thoughts and your emotions, you open up a place for choice, right? Space gives you the ability to choose. And now you can identify those limiting patterns, those limiting beliefs for what they are, just old patterns, not who you are, not some moral failing or character flaw, and start to let them go and choose new beliefs, new emotional patterns, new responses. But we can't do any of that if you are not aware of the program that's already running.
