Jake Burhans on why performing a fake version of yourself drains you: people bond with the mask, not you, so you're stuck performing forever. Drop it and lose some relationships, but gain energy and people who actually like who you are.

The reason you're exhausted and never have any energy is because you have to put on performance every day, right? You're being someone that you're not, and it's exhausting to do this. And the worst part about this is that you begin to attract people into your life that like this fake version of you. So then you have to continue to wake up and perform and be this person that you think everyone wants you to be. And it's just this suffering and this miserable experience because you don't believe that people are going to like you for who you are. But when you can wake up and how you feel internally deep down is how you express yourself outward, that's when you can really start living life. And the beautiful thing is, yeah, some of your friends may fall off, some of the connections in your life fall off that like that performative part of you, but you begin to attract people who like you for who you are at your core. And then being able to wake up and be yourself every day is this incredibly freeing experience. It doesn't suck your energy. It makes life so much more beautiful.
