Jake Burhans argues that old memories only hurt you if you keep thinking about them. You give them power by dragging them into the present. Stop rehearsing the past and they lose their grip.

Even think about how ridiculous it is. Like, why am I thinking about something that happened 5 years ago or 15 years ago? Happened 15 years ago. Why am I dragging that into the present moment? It has no control over me other than the control I give it by continuing to think about it and be fearful of it for no reason. It's like, why do we cling on to these things that we don't want?
