Jake Burhans explains how your nervous system has two modes: survival (fight-or-flight) that shuts down your prefrontal cortex, and creative (rest-and-digest) that enables growth and strategic thinking. Learning to shift out of survival mode is the upgrade that lets you actually perform.

Next, we need to learn to regulate our state of being. So let's upgrade your operating system. So it's basically like upgrade your nervous system, regulate your nervous system. There's fundamentally two states of being that we can be in. We can be in a creative state or a survival state, okay? The survival state is part of the sympathetic nervous system. The creative state is part of the parasympathetic nervous system. Now, when we're in a survival state, our body and brain is not open for growth. It does not want to grow. It wants to run away from a lion. Do you think that it's worried about, hey, how am I going to reach my goals today when it's getting chased by a lion? No. All it cares about is speed, urgency. How the heck can I get away from the lion in my current environment right here, right now? That's what matters. And when we're in that state of being, how the heck are we going to reprogram our computer? How are we going to reprogram our operating system? How are we even going to function for that matter? How are we going to think? How are we going to be at our best? How are we gonna be operating at optimal capacity when we're in a fight or flight state? When you're in a fight or flight state, the prefrontal cortex in your brain literally goes offline.
