Using Your Imagination to Create Your Reality

Jake Burhans argues that vivid, emotionally charged visualization rewires your brain and attracts real opportunities. A basketball study showed mental rehearsal improved free throws as much as physical practice. He walks through building a daily visualization habit in one-minute increments and acting like the person you want to become until the external world catches up.

We are on Chapter 3 of Psycho-Cybernetics, Your Imagination. An incredible chapter. Excited to share this one with you. If you have not followed the YouTube channel, go follow. I'm coming out with a full series on Psycho-Cybernetics. If you have not listened to the first videos, you're going to want to start on the intro, listen to Chapter 1, Chapter 2, because there are some action items there, and this may be a little bit confusing if you have not watched the other videos. So go back, watch the initial videos and work your way up to this third chapter. Uh, we'll keep going all the way to chapter 14. So this is a book all about reprogramming your self-image, things that I've done over the past 2 to 3 years as we scaled our wholesale real estate business up to a few million dollars in revenue, and as I continue to build other businesses and most importantly myself. We are on, as I said, chapter 3, first key to your success mechanism, which is your imagination. You're always imagining, so choose to imagine what you want. This is such a profound point. We're always creating our reality whether we think of— whether we think we are or not. We're usually doing it in a negative sense. We're thinking about potential negative outcomes, getting emotional about it, we're worrying, and we're creating those circumstances for ourselves. But if we can choose what we want to imagine, what we want to create, why don't we just choose the positive things? And bring those things into our, into our world. So your nervous system believes what you picture. I had mentioned this before on some other, on some other videos, that your subconscious can't tell the difference between real and imagined experiences. There was a study done with a group of basketball players, 3 groups, okay? And they were practicing free throws over the course of 3 weeks, and they wanted to see the differences in results based on how they practiced. The first group actually practiced free throws physically. The second group practiced them in their minds. They didn't do any physical things. They just visualized themselves making free throws, right? And if they missed it, they would correct, do it again in their mind. Third group did no practice whatsoever. After the 3 weeks, the first group improved 22%, right? The second group who practiced it in their mind improved like 20%, or I think the numbers were like 24% and 23%. But virtually the same. And the third group who didn't practice at all had no improvement, obviously. But the physical practice and the mental practice proved to have the same, virtually the same increase in success rate. So we can train, and you see this is why Olympians and athletes and musicians and speakers and entrepreneurs and leaders, they visualize these things. They visualize their performance. They visualize the speech, the business going right, the sales call going right, a conversation you want to have. Because when you visualize that in your mind and you get calm and you think about it and you feel into it, your brain doesn't know the difference. So it's like putting in practice reps as that new version of yourself. And Hebb's Law tells us that neurons that fire together wire together. So if you want to get really good at sales, obviously you got to make sales calls, but practicing things in your mind, how you're going to sound when you get on the call, the confidence you're going to have, how you're going to be joking with the client. If you can do that in your head and you're doing that constantly, you know, over the course of weeks and months, you're going to rewire your brain to actually be like that. So when you get on the call, that's how you're going to act. So our brain is very, very powerful. We are rewiring our brain every single moment of every single day as we are thinking thoughts, right? You're thinking new thoughts. Again, Hebslaw: neurons that fire together wire together. Meaning that as you think new thoughts, new neurons are being fired and new synaptic connections, new neural pathways are forming in your brain, and you're changing the whole chemistry of your brain by thinking new thoughts. So this is amazing. So now we can, we can understand that we can choose what we want to imagine. Choose the life that you want to imagine, the result, the thing, the outcome, whatever you want. It starts in the imagination. Now, what you think about too, like, anything that's ever been created in this world was once in someone's mind. A plane, a train, a car, a phone, this microphone, this computer screen, right? Your cell phone, the keyboard, anything was in someone's mind first, in the imagination. And they believed it enough and took enough action to bring it into the world. So you can do that with yourself in any way that you want. It's the first key. Everyone talks about it— imagination, right? Neville Goddard talks about it. You want to imagine yourself in the feeling of being in the desired end state. Napoleon Hill talks about it in Think and Grow Rich. He has a chapter on imagination. Bob Proctor talks about the power of the imagination. Joe Dispenza talks about the power of the imagination. Wayne Dyer— I mean, anyone who is successful at anything can attest to the power of your imagination. Not only, you know, with results, but literally neurologically, right? And from a neuroscience perspective and quantum perspective. So when you rehearse success, your servo mechanism goes to work to make it real. So as you rehearse it in your mind and you rewire yourself and you get emo— the key too is to get emotional about it. You have to get emotional about it. So as you get emotional with it, that's what starts to draw things into your environment energetically. Because you're on that frequency. Neville Goddard talks about it. So you are on the frequency of the end result, right? And things are gonna start to come into your environment because you're on that frequency, right? Certain thoughts, certain ideas, certain actions, certain behaviors. So daily visualization, it's, it's a conscious habit every day. To do this visualization work. So spending 30 minutes a day, that might seem like a lot, but you could do 15 minutes in the morning, 15 minutes in the evening. You could do 10 minutes a day, 5 minutes a day. Start with something, be consistent. In order to build a habit, James Clear talks about it, you want to start with something so small. So 30 minutes is probably a little bit long. You want to start something so small that even on the days that you don't want to do it, you still do it. So start with 1 minute. Spend 1 minute a day visualizing. So you can do it every single day, and even on the days you wake up like, I don't want to do it, but in your head you're like, well, I can at least do a minute. You sit down and you do a minute visualization, and you slowly work it up. James Clear used a really funny analogy in his book Atomic Habits that to build the habit of going to the gym, for the first week you don't even go to the gym. You just put your sneakers on in your house and tie your shoes. But that gets you in the mindset and the habit and the consistency of wanting to go to the gym, right? And then after you do that for a week, then you go to the gym, but you don't even work out, and you turn around, you drive back for a week. But it puts you in that habit, and as soon as it's a habit and you do it subconsciously without thinking, then you're locked and loaded, right? Because now, for me, visualization is just a habit. Like, I'm doing it every morning, every evening, constantly feeling into the reality that I want and being in that, that end state, that frequency. And again, you don't just see it, you need to be in it. You need to feel like you're actually there. In the beginning, it might feel like you're faking it, and it might feel like it's not, you know, that real. But the more that you do it, the more that you believe that it's real. So it's just like a skill you need to learn, the skill of imagination and visualization. It's really a skill. The more you do it, the better you get at it. At first, you're kind of awkward, like, this doesn't work, this is stupid, I want to quit. But if you just keep going, understand that it's very, very real and practical and beneficial. And if you really want to go deeper, if you look, if you read Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself by Dr. Joe Dispenza, goes into the science behind visualization, how to do it. He gives you a whole practice, but that's, that's like a deeper level. But yes, you want to hear it, right? Because what makes it real to your nervous system and to your body and to your brain is not just seeing it, but like hearing it. You're like, how do I hear it? How do I just sit down and visualize? And like, what would it sound like? What would it feel like, right? Like really try to get into it. And again, just practice it a few minutes a day and you can build up from there. But you want to let that version of you become familiar. And that becomes your new energetic baseline. And basically what happens— what happens when you have a new energetic baseline— we talked about our thermostat in the previous chapters, right? You're raising your thermostat. Maybe you're set at 70 degrees and now you're up at 85 degrees. What happens is the gap is created. This is called the gap of becoming. Joe Dispenza talks about the gap of becoming. You now have this new identity of who you are. You visualized it enough that you really understand who this person is, and you know how to think like them, how to act like them, how to behave like them. And how to, and how to do all the things. You start walking around and being that person in your external world, in your environment, but the world hasn't caught up yet. So this is where you need to have faith, and people drop off here. Oh, it's not working. This is crazy. People are going to call you delusional. Yes, I love the word delusional because it's only delusional until it becomes real. But you have to be delusional in order to get to this new version of yourself because it literally only exists in your head. So you visualize it, you feel into it, and then you just start being that person. That's why I say believe, behave, become. You got to believe that it's possible. Visualize it. What would that person do? How would he act? What would he think like? How would he feel? How would he respond to certain events? And then you have to behave like that person. So when certain events come in, right, like if you're the confident salesperson, that's the person that you want to project as. When that lead comes in, you better take actions that reflect a confident salesperson. You better jump on the lead right away. Not being like, oh, you know, I'm gonna, I'll call it in like 20 minutes, I gotta prepare. No, it's not what a killer does. A killer's jumping on it right away. So whatever you wanna do, and every time that you act in accordance with this new version of yourself, it's a drop in the bucket or a vote for that new version of yourself. It's a vote for that new version of yourself. So that's how you essentially become that identity. So, right? Like even me right now doing this video, okay? I am passionate about personal development. Helping people reprogram their inner world to become the 2.0 version of themselves. This is something I've wanted to do for forever, but it was not real. It was first real in my head, okay? Built for Impact, it was first real in my head, and then I had to start taking actions in alignment with that. Started putting out content, start making a podcast, start making these videos, start giving people advice, right? So I'll get— start sharing information with people to better their lives, and then eventually the world just perceives me as that person. But I had to be delusional. There was nothing that I'd ever done that would say, hey Jake, you could be a personal development coach, or you could do XYZ. I had to believe that I could do it first, right? And I sat there and I visualized and I fantasized about this version of myself, and then I had to have the confidence and the courage to step up and take action and be that person, right? So new identity is gonna give you new emotions, new behaviors, new results. And the biggest thing too, oh yeah, this is, uh, This is the— this is the work right here. So once you visualize this thing, and this is a difficult part because I'm not even gonna say difficult, it's not difficult, just something you have to learn. But the thing that we need to understand here is that we visualize this, and a lot of times you want it so bad because maybe it is like a deep soul desire, like this is who I'm meant to be, and you really want it. It's going to be delivered to you in the perfect timing. Okay, you're saying, oh, I want to get there in 3 months or 6 months. It's gonna come to you when it's meant to come to you because the universe always gives you what you want, but it gives it to you on its timing. You say, oh, I want to be a world-class speaker, I want to be a salesperson, I want to own, you know, a business or XYZ. Okay, let's use I want to own a business. I want to own a business. Okay, I'm gonna do it in 6 months. Well, realistically, you are not close enough to the type of person that can actually own and run a business and manage all that. Within 6 months, right? Earth time, right? Because time isn't really real, but 6 months. So the universe is going to deliver in its own time, okay? You have to learn lessons, you have to grow, you have to expand yourself, you have to get uncomfortable, you have to do all these things to become the person who can hold the business, okay? Who can make those decisions, who can handle when things are going chaotic and stay calm in the middle of it. You have to be built into that. So as you're along, going along your journey, all you got to do is hold the vision. Hold the vision of what you want and what it feels like to be in that end result, and let everything else come to you. The universe is gonna deliver it through synchronicities, certain calls, certain opportunities, and you're gonna notice these things. Once you notice the language of the universe, you cannot unsee it. The way that things line up perfectly. Oh, you know, even just little things, right? How I had a great example too is like I had two people on my team who didn't, you know, have the best relationship starting out when they first met each other, but I had missed a couple meetings. Okay, I had missed a couple meetings and I was mad that I had missed the meetings. Like, dang, I got to be there at those meetings. But it gave them an opportunity to connect and really build a good relationship, and now they have an have a really solid working relationship and are bouncing ideas off each other, and it's really, really good for the company. But I thought, no, it's got to go this way. I got to meet the salesman. The universe said, no, I'm going to put you in traffic here so that these two people can meet for these two days in a row so they can set the foundation of the company so the company can grow to even new heights. That's how it works. So in that moment, though, after I got the feedback from both of them that it was a great meeting, I was like, ah, yep, there I am in traffic. You know, stressing out about XYZ when in reality it's absolutely perfect. So when the universe is getting you to your destination, again, I use the example, we want it to go A, B, C, D, E, F, G to Z. The universe is going to deliver it like A, B, X, R, T, Q, L, O, M, Z. Okay, so there'll be certain challenges or certain setbacks, but they're really just learning lessons for your things that you need to develop into, and then eventually it'll come at the right time. So don't worry about the how. Don't worry about how it's gonna happen, and it goes against all logic. Goes against all logic. I totally get that, but the universe is not logical. This is by definition nonsense. What are you talking about, Jake? That's nonsense. You're right. It is nonsense because the senses are the eyes, sight, sound, touch, taste, smell. Okay, we're talking about beyond the senses. We're talking about quantum physics and energy and how all this stuff works. And the other key to understand too is what Neville Goddard talks about. When you're in the end state, right, that feeling of the end state, you're tapping into that radio station, that frequency, right? So you get new thoughts, you have new emotions, new behaviors, new actions. And when you're in that frequency and you're emitting the frequency of that end state, things are drawn into you through quantum entanglement, right? If you look up quantum entanglement, it means things are connected beyond space and time. So if you're in this elevated emotional frequency of owning a business and you live in that before your external world is reflecting it, you're gonna get certain calls, certain opportunities. People are gonna call you, things are gonna happen that are gonna put you on that path because you are in that frequency. Because in quantum entanglement, things are connected beyond time and space. That means that, think like that phone call, right, that, that sets you up with the perfect opportunity to hire your first salesperson, that came because you're in a certain frequency. That phone call, that person calling you exists on a certain frequency. So when you elevate your frequency, it's like a magnet and it draws that call in. So that's how it happens with all this stuff. And then you'll start noticing, like, you have to take my word for it. Do this stuff and then, and then watch the synchronicities happen. And then as they happen, you're like, oh my gosh, this is crazy, I can't believe this is happening. And just like build your own belief. So go build your own belief. Yeah, and you're always creating something, okay? Worrying is just visualizing negative outcomes. Why don't you just daydream and create positive ones? That's my biggest thing. They both use the same mental tool, imagination, right? So the key is alignment, not effort. Again, feel into who you're becoming, like I've already, as I already said. Asking yourself, what is— this could almost be like a journal prompt too. It's like asking yourself, what does this future version of me think, say, and do? Like, what do they think, say, and do? That's what you want to do. We talk about creating your 2.0 self, but like, really just be this person. And yeah, it's going to be a little bit delusional at first, but in the end, in the end, if you can wind up as a person that you've always wanted to become, think about it, no matter where you are in your current circumstances, what resources you have, where you're at. Imagine like being the person you've always wanted to be and how peaceful and freeing that would feel to be as that version of you. You can be that version, but you have to use a picture at first. You have to imagine it first. Let yourself become that person now in thought and feeling. So the more you practice this identity, the more natural it becomes. Feel it daily, live it internally, watch it unfold externally. All right, key themes here. Your imagination is your creative force. You're either using it consciously or by default. You're using it either way, folks. So let's use it in the proper way. Visualize what you want, hold the image, trust the process, let go of the how. You don't need to fake confidence, right? You need to feel into it daily until it becomes you. And when you're walking as this new version of yourself, I heard Myron Golden say this, and it was so good. You are not faking it, you are faithing it. Because you know this is meant for you, you know this is your highest timeline, you know this is what you're meant to have. It's not faking nothing, it's called courage, it's called faith. I'm gonna walk down this path when nothing in my external world is reflecting it. That's called faith, okay? And then the courage to do that and not care what people say, not care what people think, because you know you're meant for something bigger. You need some faith, you need some courage, folks. Get out there and you can absolutely change your life. I'll see you in Chapter 4.
