Why Confident People Look Delusional First

Jake Burhans explains why confident people seem delusional at first. He covers identity-first frameworks like be/do/have, visualization with sensory detail and emotion, and nervous-system regulation. He references Joe Dispenza and James Clear on how belief shapes behavior before results show up.

What up, people? Happy to be back on live here. Going live on Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube. I stopped for a little bit because I was lagging. The Wi-Fi where I'm at right now is not the best, but I think it was also my computer. I got a new MacBook Pro and it's like— you don't have a MacBook Pro, you got to get a MacBook Pro. I kind of decked the thing out, but it's like— it was like I was playing with a kid's toy before. I was on this Windows HP and it was not a bad computer, but my God, God blessed me with a brand new computer, making my life way easier. Right now, it's actually not lagging. I wanted to test this live out to see if I was going to lag or not. But this live, like I was talking about my TikTok live this morning, I'm going to be talking about why confident people look delusional at first, right? Why do we have to be delusional at first? Why is that necessary? That's what I want to get into today. I want to get in why you need to be delusional to reach your goals. The role that courage plays in that, that faith plays in that, and how your self-image is the root of everything that you do. It's the root of everything, okay? We must understand that our identity, everything flows downstream from how we see ourselves. I went to a seminar last, couple weekends ago, saw Myron Golden. If you guys don't know Myron Golden, African American dude, big white beard on YouTube, check him out. Freaking phenomenal, phenomenal. He one of the best speakers I've ever seen. But he laid out this whole master key for master success, which I went over in a recorded call in the school community. So if you go into link in my bio, whether you're on Facebook, LinkedIn, or YouTube, you can get into the BILT community for free, and it's in the vault there. But he talked about be, do, have. You have to be the type of person who naturally does the type of things to get a certain thing you have. So when you operate from the identity of a successful entrepreneur, right, of a fit person, of someone who is in a healthy and happy marriage, when you operate from the identity of that person, the actions naturally flow downstream, right? If you are that identity, the doing will come naturally, and then you will have the things that you want. But what do we do? We're focusing, oh, I gotta do more, I gotta push more, I need more discipline, more reps, more whatever. No, you need to shift your self-image. Our system always wants to act in alignment with how we see ourselves, okay? So if you don't see yourself as a successful entrepreneur, as a healthy person, as someone who's confident, when you try to go do the things that that type of person would naturally do, there's an error. Your system's like, "Oh no, that's not how we are. We're not a successful entrepreneur. We're this person who's shy and timid and meek." doesn't wanna do anything. So there's an error and your system wants to pull you back to the familiar, back to the familiar of how you have been operating, okay? That's what the nervous system does. Our nervous system, guess what? Doesn't care about your goals. It doesn't. It actually doesn't want you to grow. Did you know that? Your nervous system doesn't want you to grow. All it cares about is keeping you alive. Because our nervous system is freaking 400 million years old. 400 million years old. And all it cares about is, am I safe or not safe, right? And how does it determine that? Well, if it's familiar and it didn't kill us, that's safe. Let's stay here. If it's unfamiliar, potentially could kill us. Think about this evolutionarily speaking. If we were in a village back in the day, maybe it was like a torturous village. It was, it was a miserable experience, but we were alive. Our system would rather stay in that miserable village, in that familiar hell, than venture into the woods where there could be some utopia, right? There could be some utopia in the woods, um, or not in the woods, or there could be like another village that is better. But our system doesn't want to take the risk of going into the woods because we could be killed by a predator or an enemy. So that's how we've been physiologically wired to stay alive, is stay in the familiar. So guess what's unfamiliar to your system? The new version of yourself. A speaking engagement, a sales call, a this, a that. All that growth, all that, that new version of you is unfamiliar. So your system wants to self-sabotage, right? It wants to bring you back to the familiar. So we need to rewire our identity first, rewire our self-image first, and everything will be easier. Because if you see yourself as a successful entrepreneur and you're doing that work, and that's really who you believe yourself to be, it's not delusion. It's the starting point of all creation, guys. You think you're being delusional. You think that we need to wait for something in the external world. Let me make sure I'm on the right mic real quick, actually. How do I check this? I am on the right mic. Okay. I did that one time, wrong mic, and I listened to the recording and I was like, you fricking buffoon, you buffoon. Okay. Cause if in your mind, in your mind, you have to be that thing first. I call it, Meyer calls, Meyer Golden calls it be, do, have. I call it believe, behave, become. You got to believe it in your mind first. Got to be real in your mind first, right? That's the being part. And then you got to go do the thing in the world without having seen the result. You got to go do it and then you will have the things. Okay? We got to be that person first, that identity. So if I can rewire and I can familiarize my system with this new version of myself. And what are we doing through visualization? We're installing new patterns into our nervous system, into our subconscious mind. How do those new patterns get hardwired in? They get hardwired through familiarity. That's how you reprogram your self-image. 'Cause right now your self-image is a system of patterns, right? It's a consistent system of thinking and acting and feeling and behaving and all these things. Right? That is what your current system is. Like, your identity is— and it's not like I'm an entrepreneur, I'm a wife. That's a noun. Your identity to your system is your most familiar ways of thinking, acting, feeling, behaving, talking to yourself, your standard stress levels, all of those things. Okay? All of those things are what your system deems as me because you have thought that way, acted that way, and felt that way enough over time that it now just wants to stay there, right? Our system craves the familiar. So if you've been thinking stressed thoughts and doubtful thoughts and you've conditioned yourself to believe you're this version of yourself, your system wants to stay there. So when you try to consciously change, you'd be like, I want to be a successful entrepreneur today. Your system goes, no, you're not. No, you're not, dude. What are you talking about? There's no proof that says that you should be an entrepreneur or that you should be— make this much money or get to this level or do this or do that. There's no proof. So we have to install that proof in our mind, and we can do that through visualization, right? The 4 pillars of visualization are vivid imagination, as much sensory detail as you can, as you can have, okay? As much sensory detail. So seeing that environment, hearing it, smelling it, feeling it— kinesthetic touch is one of the, the best ways to really imprint that into your mind. And then the accompanying emotion. So if I'm trying to visualize myself being a regulated calm entrepreneur, I need to not only think the thoughts in vivid detail, but I need to feel the emotion of what does it feel like to be an entrepreneur? I like to use the 3-word model of like who I am. Like when I was stressed out all the time and I was becoming the new version of myself, I was calm, cool, and collected. That's what I told myself. This version of Jake, Jake 2.0, he's boom, boom, boom. He's calm, cool, and collected.. And that's what I would guess when I'm sitting down on my visualizations and, and I'm envisioning this version of myself who's the calm, cool, and collected entrepreneur. I could feel that. I could feel the relaxation. I could see myself walking into the office for the day, opening my laptop. Shiz is hitting the fan, right? People are freaking out. Someone fired, someone's trying to sue us, whatever the deal is. And oh my gosh, I feel the intensity in my chest, but I'm relaxed. I'm conditioning my body to understand how to, to operate in that environment. You begin to install those neural networks because our brain doesn't know the difference between a vividly imagined reality and physical reality, right? So vivid imagination with the accompanying emotion again, and then from a relaxed state. So what happens is we have 4 different levels of brainwaves: beta, alpha, theta, delta. Beta is like our analytical mind. Our mind is online right now, we're in beta. Beta is also the seat of your identity. It's that default mode network in your brain. It's your sense of self, which is based on your conditioned patterns. So when I'm like in my day-to-day and I try to install these new beliefs of like, oh, you're a confident, regulated entrepreneur, you're a millionaire, my analytical mind goes like, That's stupid. No, you're not. Like, get back to work. So what we need to do is quiet that analytical mind down. We got to get from beta into alpha. This is what Joe Dispenza talks about, right? The meditations to slow your brainwaves down so you can begin to visualize and get the energy of this new person. And it's not woo-woo. You're literally— this is neuroscience. You are calming your brainwaves down so that analytical mind can go offline so you can start to actually believe, what does it feel like to be this new version of myself? You can get into it without that negative analytical mind being like, that's not you, you can't do that. It's kind of offline, right? So you can really imprint on the brain. So you want to get into that alpha state, right? And the best way to do this is right when you wake up in the morning and right before you go to bed. So when you wake up in the morning, you're coming out of deep sleep, you haven't kicked your brain yet, your brain hasn't kicked on yet into that analytical mind.. So you want to, um, just like, I like roll out of bed and just boom, right into it. I'm putting in binaural beats, right? To kind of keep my brain in that trance state. I'm just going to focus on my breathing. And then I'm just going to, again, vivid imagination and the accompanying emotion from a relaxed state. I'm going to just feel into this new version of myself, the highest version of myself, right? Who is this person I'm becoming? They're more charismatic. They're more confident. They're more calm. They're more regulated. I'm visualizing myself. I'm installing those neural networks in my brain. This isn't just made-up spiritual fluff. This is real neuroscience of how do you create new connections in your brain. You do it with imagery, with emotion, from a relaxed state over time. Takes repetition. That's the other pillar. So it's vivid imagination, it's emotion, it's from a relaxed state, and repetition over time. If you have these deeply ingrained patterns, and again, we're talking about self-image, just to wrap it, bring it back. What are we doing? We're talking about, you know, you need to be delusional at first, right? You need to be it in your mind first. You need to rewire your patterns to be this person, and then the doing will be much easier. That's what I'm talking about here. I'm talking about be, do, have, because when you are the identity of the person that you want to be internally, that's who you believe you are, the doing is completely natural, guys. It's just an expression of who you are, right? So when you are that type of person, the doing is just a flowing, and then it becomes so much easier to be consistent. Understand that. It becomes so much easier to be consistent and to be disciplined when you are operating from the identity of the person who already does that thing. The reason it's so hard for you to be consistent is because you're not operating from the identity of the person who does that. You're trying to be relaxed, you're trying to be the regulated entrepreneur, or maybe you're trying to break into the entrepreneurial space, or maybe you're trying to learn how to shut off because you've already crushed it in your career. You're trying to learn how to shut off. You can't do that because you are not You don't believe, okay? You don't believe that you are the identity of the person who actually does that. You can't believe that you are, that you can be a successful, high-performing entrepreneur and make millions of dollars and be regulated and have internal peace and clarity and a sense of calmness. You don't believe that. So naturally, when you try to do the things that that version of yourself would do, your system is meeting it with resistance because why? It's trying to keep you in the familiar. Oh, well, this version of me was— I'm always running on pressure. So it wants to stay there. Again, familiar equals safe, unfamiliar equals dangerous. System would prefer familiar hell of stress and anxiety and all this stuff because it hasn't killed you yet, to the unfamiliar, regulated, focused, happy, peaceful, calm entrepreneur. So how do you get yourself to believe this new self-image before you've even done anything? Familiarity. Familiarity is what makes you believe something. If you can familiarize your system with a new way of operating, create those new neural networks, it becomes easier to do it in your day-to-day life. So it's a combination of visualization in the, in the mornings and in the evenings to install that, those new neural networks. And also doing it every single day. James Clear says Atomic Habits— what does Atomic Habits talk about? It basically talks about if you want to change, you change at the identity level, right? He talks about like outcomes, processes, and identity. Identity is how you change. That's the premise of that whole book, your identity. Now, how do you do that? You do that through little habits, right? He says Every action you take is a vote for the future self. So I agree with that. So what we want to do is we want to combine, combine visualization, powerful visualizations in the morning, in the evening with your everyday actions. So every day when you're sitting there visualizing and feeling the emotion of this new person, you're hardwiring in your system to become familiar with this version of yourself. You're literally familiarizing yourself with this new you. And over time, as you familiarize yourself with this new version, you will— so right now you have— think about, um, let's think about like a, you know, a path through the woods or like ski slopes, right? You have these ruts in your brain right now. Right now, here's the surface level. You have a deep rut, and that's basically how you've been thinking. How you've been feeling, how you've been acting, how you've been doing everything is this deeply ingrained rut. So your system just wants to fall into that rut because it's the path of least resistance. What we have to do is start to carve out a new pathway, right? A new state of being. So maybe your old state of being is stressed, anxious, doubting yourself, worried, whatever. Your new state of being is regulated, calm, focused, grateful, positive. Well, guess what? It's gonna take time, it's gonna take repetition to familiarize that new pattern of calm, peace, regulation, and focus. And it's not until this new pattern becomes more familiar than the old pattern, right, that our system starts to default to this new state all the time, right? So that's why it's gonna take repetition. So think about this, we're calibrating, we're basically calibrating a new version of yourself. So you have, you know, here's your current calibration, it's your current self. We got to calibrate this new version of ourselves until this new version becomes more familiar than the old version. And once we cross that threshold where these new patterns are now more familiar than the old patterns, it starts to become easy to be this new version of yourself. Right now, this version is officially more familiar than the old patterns. And now your system's working for you. Right now it wants to go back to these new patterns and the gap gets bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger until this new version of yourself, until this old version is like a distant memory, right? The stressed out, anxious, fearful version. It's just like a distant memory, guys, a distant frickin' memory. So that's the process of rewiring your self-image. That's how you can be something before you have something. So we can't be waiting for results to show up, guys. We can't be waiting for the frickin' results of— no one's coming in on a horse and telling you, hey man, you're ready to go do it. Hey woman, you're ready to be an entrepreneur. You're ready to change your life. You got to make that decision. You make the decision. That's how anyone who's ever done anything. As I get into these bigger rooms, I start getting around people who are operating at a higher level. Man, it is clicking for me. It is clicking for me. You have to have a delusional sense of self-belief because that's how you get the reality. You want the reality where you have a big business and you make a lot of money and you have the relationships, you have all these stuff. You got to be the type of person first. You got to feel it. You got to visualize. You got to be it. And when you are being it and you've rewired that familiarity, right, you're just going to naturally do the actions that that person does. And if there's less resistance— because it's going to take time, right, regardless, for you to accomplish what you want to accomplish, it's going to take time, right? But the reason that you can't change is because you're not rewiring yourself at the subconscious level. You're not, you're not following the process of awareness, nervous system regulation. Identity reconditioning, emotional release. And I haven't even got— as I do these lives, I'll get more into the BILT framework and talk about it. But you need to learn how to follow the physiological sequence that's going to help you rewire your system, right? But you have to rewire those patterns. And when you fundamentally change who you are, your beliefs, your thoughts, your nervous system, you let go of your old traumas and emotions. All the action is easy. And then you can show up for 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, a year, 2 years, no problem. Because in your head, you already know you're this person. It doesn't even matter. The results don't even matter because you're already this person and you're just doing the things that this person does. That's it. Okay? That's how people are able to go 3, 4, 5 years doing something because they snapped in their head and they rewired their identity. A lot of people don't know how they do it. They can't articulate it. They don't know the science and all the research behind it. I'm not a doctor, but I've done a frickin' heck of a lot amount of research on all this stuff and how human beings change. And that's why I created the Built Framework. That is why I created the Built Framework. The Built Framework is rooted in decades, decades of peer-reviewed research across Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Fusion, behavior, cognitive neuroscience, psychophysiology, nervous system regulation, polyvagal theory, somatic experience, trauma, right? Visualization, visualization, identity work, all that stuff, motivation theory, everything in Built for Impact has stems from well-documented and researched things. And it's put together to help you rewire your inner world. It is the internal operating system for entrepreneurs, for anyone, for any high performer that's looking to build their lives from peace instead of pressure without sacrificing results. Not only are you not gonna sacrifice results, you are going to multiply your results. Why? Because when you're running around like a chaotic internal mess, you can't manage your thoughts, you're dysregulated, you're in fight or flight, right? Your past trauma is driving you into the ground. You are not showing up as 100% of you. You're showing up as like 30% of you. And think about this: however much success that you have had up to this point, okay, however much success that you have had, you've done it running on like 30 or 40% of your capacity. Think about how successful you can be if you do the internal work Right? You do the internal work to be able to manage your thoughts. What if you could have a thought at 8:00 AM in the morning, you know, that would typically dysregulate you? What if I run out of money? What if I can't get the sale? Someone's blowing up and you're able to regulate, get back on track and just boom, go crush 4 more sales. Go make $5K, go make $10K. How much would your business change? How much would your life change? Not only would you feel better, you would make more fricking money. Okay? So I'm not getting into the Built Framework right now, but I just want to talk about self-image. I'm doing these lives. I think I'll be doing like 30 minutes of live a day and they'll be saved on YouTube and stuff, which is great. They'll be saved on YouTube and Facebook and all these things. You have to be delusional. Why do confident people look delusional first? Because they have to be, right? That confidence comes from— and it comes from knowing who you're meant to be. Like, I want to give you guys an example. Built For Impact is an example of this exact thing. Okay? I woke up on October 1st, 2025, 8 months ago, 9 months ago, because I had a burning— I had a little ember in my heart. Okay, let me tell you about something. I had a little ember in my heart and it was like, I wanted to be a performance coach, a personal development coach. I wanted to help people overcome the stress and the anxiety they've been living through and become the best version of themselves. It was kindling in me for a while, but I kept pushing it down. No, I can't do it. I'm not ready for it. I got to get to this level in the business. I got to make this amount of money and then I'll be able to coach people. I'm not ready yet. I'm not ready yet. That was that little inner voice that wanted to stay in the familiar. Right? It was that voice that wanted to keep me in the familiar because it was safe. It didn't want me to grow. But deep down, I knew I had to follow this thing. It was like this little— this is what God plants in you. Okay? God plants in you this little spark. Myron Golden said, success is what you were put on this earth to do. Success is what you were put on this earth to do. Wow. That's incredible. Think about this, you could be— if you have a Bentley, you have a brand new— let's say Ferrari, you got a brand new Ferrari, okay? But then you take that Ferrari, you back it out of your garage, you drive it on your front lawn, open the gas tank and just dump a bunch of dirt in it. Roll down the windows, just dump buckets of dirt in it. Then you plant some plants in the car. And then the Ferrari just sits out front as the world's most expensive plant holder. Is that car being used to its fullest capacity? Not even close. Not even close. And that's like you. That's like you. Because we don't have the courage to follow what's in our heart, because we're making up these things, because our mind is running our lives and our emotions are running our lives and our past trauma is running our lives, we are not living to our greatest potential. Right? We have this little ember in our heart, and maybe it's kind of died out, but it's still kindling there. It's within you. It's like a little ember, right? And if you follow that feeling in your heart and you fan the flame and you, and you take the courage and you have the courage to get up and follow that in your heart, you will be met with more abundance than you could ever possibly imagine. That's it. So I woke up on October 1st and I was like, I know I'm meant to do this. This is it. And I made the decision. Boom. Like, this is what's happening. Like, no, what's happening, Jake? Built for Impact. Boom. I was like, okay, Built for Impact. I freaking started that podcast that week. What are we on? We're on episode 34 of the podcast every single week since I started that. And guess what? I'm excited to do that podcast every single week. It's easy. Why? Because I am just that type of person. That's who I am, right? My identity snapped in that moment, right? 'Cause I had been doing the work and I was like, no, this is just who I am. And it felt unfamiliar at first, but over time now it's just like, now that's just who I am. Like, I am not a real estate entrepreneur. I am this guy. I am this guy. I know I'm this guy because I've been thinking and acting. I've been thinking and feeling and acting like that person for so long that that's just what's most familiar to my system. And it compounds like a snowball. Now I'm going on lives on YouTube and I'm, you know, networking and I'm just going harder and harder and harder and harder because I just am going into this version of myself more and more and more. So I've been posting every single day since October 1st and I haven't got really any traction on social media, but I continue to do it. Why? Because this is the version of myself, because I'm just acting from that identity. That's it. I'm acting from that identity, guys. All right. So Hopefully that helped. If you got any value, link to the school community is in the bio below. It's free to join, right? Why'd I make it free? So that I can give you— and there's free stuff in there to get started, tools that you can get started with right away to start practicing the inner work. You don't have to pay for anything. So the only reason that you don't, that you don't join the community is because of a mental block. It's you. Because I'm telling you, I have the system that rewired my whole life. And I still run a multimillion-dollar business and we run into issues all the damn time. I'm an operator, guys. I'm not just sitting on the sideline, "Oh, I read this in a book. You guys should do this." No, I'm in the heat of battle every single day. And this is what I use in the heat of battle every single day. This framework, this inner operating system that will completely change your life. So get in there. We got weekly calls Tuesday at 5:30. I will see you guys on the flip side. If you have any questions, you can comment. I will get back to you. Best place though is to get into the community and start making posts, interacting with people, build relationships with other people, other high performers who want to do the internal work. Do it for yourself. Alright? Love you all. Till next time, all the peace, all the power.
