Jake Burhans explains why saying "I am angry" locks you into that feeling, while "I am experiencing anger" creates space to notice the pattern and choose differently. This awareness gap is where change actually starts.

Okay, so this is the turning point for most people. Huge turning point. It's the difference between I am angry and I am experiencing anger. One of those locks identity into your state of being. The other one creates awareness around it or separation. That separation in space is where change can begin to occur because you've broken the loop. You are aware of the old pattern. You can now consciously choose a new pattern, but you can't do that unless you're aware. But that's where behavior change starts without force. Change can begin the moment that old identity, that old automatic loop is broken and it's observed, and then you can change. And that's the foundation of everything in the first pillar of BILT, break limiting beliefs.
