Jake Burhans explains why you can't relax on days off: your nervous system has learned that constant stress means safety. You can't relax on your day off, not because you're undisciplined, but because your body literally doesn't recognize that state as safe. You sit down on the vacation that you've been thinking about for 6 months on the chair. Instantly you're thinking about what you need to do. You're taking your phone out, you're checking your email, you're doing this, you're fidgeting. You literally can't even sit still. The nervous system always treats what's familiar as safe. So if you spent years in this low-grade stress and pressure and urgency, when you finally sit down and feel that peace in your system, Your system recognizes it as unfamiliar, thinks it's a threat, and then is manufacturing a reason for you to move and get things going. It's not that you're bad at relaxing, it's that your system is literally defending a state of being that it's familiar with. It's familiar with the pressure and the urgency that you're used to running on 24/7 when you're working. So you don't have a rest problem, you have a body that's literally never been taught that being calm is safe.
