Jake Burhans explains how thoughts and emotions are temporary events, not who you are. Most people react automatically to them, but creating distance through observation lets you choose your response instead of reacting on instinct.

This might be the most important skill for change. You are not your thoughts or your emotions. Thoughts and emotions are events. They rise and they pass, but most people are mistaking these things for the truth of reality. These are who we are. When you believe every thought and emotion, you're reacting automatically every single time. But when you can observe these things, you then gain the freedom to make a choice and respond instead of react. That one single shift creates space between stimulus and reaction. Awareness is the first upgrade. This is where real change starts.
