A collector called Kabuto King is buying every first-edition Kabuto Pokémon card he can find, driving prices from cheaper cards up to $610 for PSA-10s. The theory: he'll burn most of them to create artificial scarcity, then sell the survivors for tens of thousands each, like first-edition Charizards.

How come nobody told me about Kabuto King? He's currently on a mission and publicly documenting it of collecting every single first edition Kabuto Pokémon card that exists. But this is fascinating for a couple reasons. First off, because he's been buying up all the supply publicly, price of them are going up. Look at the chart above my head, to the point that some of these first edition PSA 10s are selling for $610. You will end up owning all the Kabuto. They'll be worth a ton, but you're gonna say, who's gonna buy those from him? My insane thesis is that he burns most of them and ends up with a small collection of first edition Kabutos each that are worth tens of thousands of dollars, just like a Charizard is. And then he controls the market and they actually value, and he can sell them for a massive profit.
