Honestly, you were lied to if you were told that e-commerce is an easy business model to run. It's one of my favorites, but it's probably one of the tougher ones. Now I've sold tens of millions of dollars of consumer goods direct to consumer through the internet. Margins are thin and average cart values or average order values are low. So let's say you have a 70% gross margin, which would be good for consumer. Maybe you're down to 20% if you're crushing it after you pay for ads, after you pay for employees, after you pay for everything, and you have an average order value or ACV, average cart value. Of $70. Seems reasonable, right? So 20% on $70 means you make $14. $14. And from here on out, most of the businesses I want to be involved in are actually B2B.
