Janet Macaluso teaches a breathing practice: breathe in for five counts, out for five counts, and focus on your heart. Do it before meetings to cut stress hormones, sharpen your thinking, and rebuild energy.

If you're breathing rhythmically, it's let's say five in and five out. Other contemplative practices may say six and four or something. I'm saying whatever inhale, you use the same exhale and then it's evenly, which means it's smooth. It's not like maybe an aerobics drinking through the straw, it's even. And through the heart means we're focusing. The breathing in and out through the heart takes the internal chatter away from what's going on here, gives us focus. The habit is doing this heart focused breathing before a meeting, in the meeting, just to get clarity and recharge at any time in the day, to reduce the depleting hormones and build up your positivity and energy.
