1820: Mark Victor Hansen, Ask! The Bridge From Your Dreams to Reality, Jason Hartman University Live Event
23 Mar 2022 · 48 min
In this episode of the Creating Wealth show, host Jason Hartman interviews bestselling author and motivational speaker Mark Victor Hansen, co‑creator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. The conversation weaves together three main strands: (1) a macro‑economic briefing on why today’s 30‑year fixed‑rate mortgages are historically cheap compared to inflation, and why investors should lock in these rates before they rise; (2) Hansen’s personal wealth‑building philosophy, encapsulated in his "Ask" framework and the "wealth triangle" of business, book, and marketing, with concrete tactics such as affirmations, goal‑setting, visualization, and mastermind groups; and (3) their shared commitment to philanthropy and entrepreneurship education, including scholarships, mentorship programs, and a new ghost‑writing service for aspiring authors. Throughout, they sprinkle anecdotes about the Chicken Soup series, past real‑estate deals, and personal stories of failure and recovery, while promoting upcoming live events, contests, and resources for listeners. The episode ends with mutual gratitude and a promise to continue the dialogue in future shows.

Welcome empowered investors from 189 countries worldwide. Thank you for joining us for episode number 1821-820. Today we have a very famous guest. You've certainly heard of him. It is none other than Mark Victor Hansen, the authority of Chicken Soup for the Soul, or I should say co author with Jack Canfield, who's been on the show a few times before. But he is an amazing guy, very dynamic. I spent some time with him in Houston just about two months ago and really enjoyed some meals together with him and his lovely wife Crystal. And Mark Victor Hansen will be here in just a few moments. Keep in mind, by the way, if you are interested in learning about, well, motivation is mostly what he's about, but book publishing, Chicken Soup for the Soul, among his many, many other books is a truly amazing story. You may have heard it, but they sold somewhere near a half a billion books. That's a billion with a B. That is a truly amazing accomplishment. That's the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. So we will have Mark Victor Hansen in just a couple of minutes. Before we do that though, this is obviously a 10th episode show so we're going to go off topic, discuss something of general interest. We certainly will fulfill that mission for you today. And our next episodes, of course, will be right back on target with personal finance, investing, real estate, macroeconomics. But I couldn't resist talking just a little bit about some important information as far as interest rates and inflation. Very important we talk about this. Now we all know interest rates have been going up and they are destined to go up significantly higher. They have been toxically and artificially low for far too long. This is bad behavior on the part of the federal Reserve and other central banks around the world. It cannot last. It is bad for the system in so, so many ways. Of course as real estate investors we've been loving it, haven't we? We've been taking advantage of it. We've been doing refi till you die. My trademark program made so many people so much money and that has just been phenomenal. And of course getting those three decade long fixed rate loans and getting paid to borrow money, none of us can complain about that. It's fantastic. But even with interest rate increases, some fairly significant increases, we're still going to get paid a lot to borrow that money. A lot. Look at these charts. Check this out. Now if you are only listening to the audio, I will explain it. It's like Lucille Ball, she was so funny. What a comedic genius. If you ever get a chance or you know, haven't done it recently, watch some of those old Lucille Ball reruns. They are hilarious. She's just excellent comedic talent. But anyway, Ricky, her husband used to say when he got mad at her, Lucy, you got some explaining to do. So I'm going to explain, I'm going to explain it to you right now. So check out these charts. They are truly amazing. Now for those just listening on audio, I am showing a chart on the video right now of the consumer price index from 1970 on up to present day. And on this graph we have another metric and that is the 30 year fixed rate mortgage. And we're comparing the CPI, the highly manipulated and understated consumer Price index to the 30 year fixed rate mortgage. So in other words, what is the rate of inflation? In other words, how quickly is our dollar being devalued or debased? Or how quickly are we being pickpocketed by the Federal Reserve and its unholy alliance with our government? How, how fast are they just stealing from us? Because inflation is a pickpocket, a liar and a thief. Yes it is. And it's, it's a pretty covert one by the way. Most people don't understand it very well. And how quickly are we being pickpocketed versus how much can we borrow for for three whole decades? Think about it. Today, if you borrow on a 30 year fixed rate mortgage, you're not going to make the last payment on that mortgage or. I stand corrected. Your tenants, because that's who really pays the mortgage, are not going to make the last payment on that mortgage until 2052. That is, that's phenomenal. I mean that's an incredible privilege, isn't it? So at what other times in history have we had this inversion? You know, they always talk about the yield curve being a sign of recession, which by the way has not turned out to be true. True. Because of these other factors that we've had put into the economy. Now, you know, it has been for a long time, but lately, you know, the yield curve, it could still invert or go flat. And you know, it hasn't given us a recession. Right. But you know, not to say it, it won't the next time around, but we have an inversion here, another kind of yield curve inversion, right, where the 30 year fixed rate mortgage rarely, very rarely goes below the rate of the consumer price index, below the rate of the official inflation, the stated rate of inflation. And it is now. Okay, so, so right now you can borrow money for three decades at a much lower rate than the government is telling us inflation is. But in reality, we all know it's highly understated, manipulated, it's a lie and inflation is really dramatically higher than that. So say for example, today you can borrow it four and a half percent on an investment property, or let's just round it off, let's call it 4%. You're really going to pay a little more than that. But if you borrow on a personal residence, it's going to be less than that. I just locked in a personal residence loan at 3%. Yes, amazing. That was just a couple of weeks ago. I'm not saying you'll get it today, you probably won't. But anyway, you know, you got good characteristics on your loan application. You know, you might be able to pull that off probably a little higher than that now. But on an investment property we know we have to pay a little bit more. There's a little bit of a risk premium for a rental property, which is fine. It's still no big deal. It's still such a great deal because hey, we're not paying the mortgage anyway. The tenants paying the mortgage, right? And then they're giving us a little extra maybe every month called positive cash flow. Well, nowadays since prices have appreciated so much and the rents are still catching up, they always lag behind the prices. You know, sometimes those deals aren't cash flowing at all. But we are in such a capital appreciation market that it is truly amazing. Okay, so right now it's inverted. We can borrow dramatically less. So inflation 7.9%. In reality it's about 15%. If you borrow it 4%. And let's call the inflation, we'll round off at 8, you're getting paid 4% to borrow versus the stated rate of inflation. But the real rate of inflation, I say is 15%. You'll probably agree with me if you're realistic, if you're not an apologist for Brandon, because all the Brandon apologists, well, they just don't want to face reality. It's quite a disaster. But let's take advantage of that disaster and make it profitable. Turn lemons into lemonade. That's what we do. So you're getting paid 4% to borrow versus the official rate of inflation. Approximately. And you're getting paid 11% to borrow versus the real rate of inflation. Now, at what other point in history has that happened? Well, I'm going to tell you, back in 1980, remember Paul Volcker, the former Federal Reserve chair? And that guy had guts. He has like the same kind of courage that the guy running Ukraine has. I mean, talk about courage, right? So Zelensky and Paul Volcker, you could compare them for sure. So we see the official rate of inflation being quite a bit higher than the 30 year fixed rate mortgage. Right about 1980, during that recession, right, as Reagan was just coming into office and cleaning up the Jimmy Carter disaster. And you know, Carter was a good man, but, you know, not a good president. There's a difference. So there we had a spread of just a couple of points where the inflation rate was higher than the 30 year fixed rate mortgage, but it's a lot less significant than we have now. Okay, so we also had this happen back in about 1970, I want to say that's about 1973. Okay. To about 1976, we had this happen as well. But guess what? And the spread at one point it got about as high as it is now. This spread between CPI inflation and 30 year fixed rate mortgage, but never since then. Okay, so 1980 to today, you got what, 42 year opportunity here? So I'm telling you folks, mark my words, you're going to be very happy if you stock up on these 30 year fixed rate mortgages. And finally, by the way, someone is saying what I've been saying for a good two years now, and that is Mike Simonson, who I had on the show recently, the head of ALTOS research. He just said it the other day on a video I was watching where he said, and this is what I've been saying for two years. Nobody else in the media has been saying this. Nobody. Nobody. At least not that I know of. Correct me if I'm wrong. Oh, by the way, don't forget, I gotta announce the Contest winners get to that in a moment. He said that all these people, these tens of millions of people with all of these incredibly cheap, artificially cheap mortgages will simply not want to part with those mortgages. They will not want to give them up. And that is going to further exacerbate the housing shortage. Now, he didn't say it that way. Those are all my words. But he said the same basic thing like, you know, where's the motivation for someone with an ultra cheap mortgage to sell into the market when they've got an asset? That mortgage is such a powerful asset and it cannot be replaced. Remember, two things that make anything valuable, whether it be currency or loved ones or collectible items. You know, that valuable watch you have, that family heirloom, that antique, that classic car, whatever it is, only two things really drive value for anything. According to, well, yours truly, Jason Hartman, scarcity and utility. Scarcity and utility. And guess what? The mortgage will be this irreplaceable thing it already is. All the people that got these super low rate mortgages over the past two years, those mortgages cannot be replaced. There is no bargain on money, right? The market is too perfect. You can't go find a deal. I mean, yeah, I guess there's like, you know, I know I'm going to get an email on this because someone's going to say, jason, you're wrong because I got a deal on money and I borrowed lower than the rate. But you know, look, folks, I get that there's always an exception on everything, okay, what's the saying? No rules or laws apply universally, including this one. Okay, so don't fry me on that. But the basic idea is you can't replace the mortgage, right? Okay, here I'll just show you the same chart but just presented in a different way because it's a little easier to see here. And so this really just shows you when I compact this chart how significant this incredible opportunity we still have is. But it is going away because the Fed, as they raise rates, the economy is going to cool off and these two will meet in the night. Okay, the CPI and the 30 year fixed rate mortgage will meet. Maybe the 30 year fixed rate mortgage goes up and it's 5% for an investment property or 5 and a half or 6%. And then the inflation rate goes down to 5 or 6%. Now real inflation will still be much higher. It'll still be a bargain to capitalize and get all those mortgages, even when the CPI rate meets the mortgage rate. And it should be higher, but you know, that's just because the CPI is so manipulated. But now it's like they're telling you, you've got to borrow this money. They're just literally saying, borrow the money. Take advantage of us. Steal from the Fed for a change. Because, hey, they've been stealing from us for way too long. And we are happy to announce this week's raffle winners. Remember, all you need to do is comment on our YouTube videos and we will pick one of those comments at random. But I'm just going to share a little bit of it. It says I've been listening to this podcast since the fall of 2014 and it has been life changing in a good way. I have dramatically increased my net worth by following Jason Hartman's various real estate principles and have gained a wealth of knowledge by listening to almost 1000 episodes at this point. Wow. Thank you for listening. Jason Hartman is not your typical real estate investor and doesn't sugarcoat the process. Investing in real estate is a big undertaking for a novice. But over time, listening and putting what Jason has said into action, I have challenged myself by changing my mindset and becoming a knowledgeable investor. He has great tact with his guest and is a superb interviewer by engaging them in a wide breadth of topics to include real estate, macroeconomics, demographics, self help. That's what we're doing today because it's 10th episode show, insightful lessons, politics, and the occasional hilarious tangent. Yes, I do go off on tangents. Actually, we haven't done a tangent alert lately. You know what? Next week I'll try to remember to do some tangents for you. Anyway, this is a very long review, Alabama. Thank you so much for the kind words and the nice review. We really appreciate it. And be sure to go to Apple Podcast, write a review and go on the YouTube channel and just make some comments. You've heard his name. He is the co author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. And we're going to talk today a lot about his book Ask, which is about asking for what you want to he that asketh it shall be given, as the saying goes. But hey, he's the author of 318 books, so we're gonna have a lot of wisdom here with us. He's also a real estate investor. Mark, it's great to have you on the show. How you doing?
Well, Jason, you and I have Been friends, like you said, again and again, every seminar we've been. You and I have been in a lot of think tanks together. So it is a joy to my heart to be your friend.
And the feeling is mutual, my friend. You know, had it not been for the collective mastermind that I run with your, your buddy Ken and then George, you know, we really wouldn't have gotten together and this show wouldn't have been possible. So really grateful for that and just really want to share some of your tremendous experience with my audience now. My first exposure to you as you know, but I'll just, for the listeners benefit, I'll tell them was back in approximately, I'm going to say, 1989, 1988, something like that, when I went to an event at Remix in Irvine, California, a beautiful restaurant on Von Carmen Avenue. I remember that morning you hosted these breakfast meetings and you were just such a go getter, dynamic guy, motivational. It was incredible. And who would have known that's before Chicken Soup for the Soul. But you had a lot of other successes under your belt before then. So just give us a little bit of your background.
Well, relevant to the people here. We're going to say, hey, look, everything in my business creating wealth is a triangle. You got to have a business at the top, and I don't think you need one. I created the whole book series, as you know, with Bob Allen, and he paid me a million dollars a book at Random House. One Minute Millionaire, which is the second bestseller after Think Grow Rich, the Enlightened Way to Wealth. And the first thing we say is that you ought to have MSIs, multiple sources of income. And there's one right, perfect, easy, acceptable way to everyone to make a fortune. Like, yes, you should own real estate, which I'll go to in a second. But everything needs to be invented. The lamp, we're looking at, the zoom, we're on the microphone. There's a gazillion ways to make a million, and there's not a perfect way. But what we say is you got to have a business, then you got to have a book, and then you got to have marketing those three things. And you've got an invincible triangle to become really strong. Now back to My Story, 1974. I've been with Bucky Fuller. The guy invented geodesic domes. And I'm doing $2 million a year with domes in New York City. You know, Frank Sinatra said, if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere. Yeah, I thought I was invincible and beating on my chest, but Suddenly the oil embargo hit. I couldn't get pvc, polyvinyl chloride, plastic crashed and burned and for six months I'm sleeping in front of another guy Sleeping in a sleeping bag in front of another guy's room feeling upside down. I kept saying come on God, should I kill myself because my money and my self worth were the same. I thought I'd arrived eating top of the sixes and World Trade center and all that and now I've crashed and burned. And by the way, for everybody listening, if you make money, don't make that the only goal. Money is what makes you more of whatever you are so you want to work on your self awareness and self esteem. Anyhow, crash and burn started speaking, making money started a little mastermind group like the Collective. The people in the Mast line group owned all the garbage dumps in Long island where I lived. Hicksville, Long Island. They said, hey look, we just bought this house for seven grand. We fixed up, we'll sell it to you for 14 grand and manage it. So the first house I bought was $14,000. East Islip, Long Island, New York. Two grand down. Three years later, I'm selling for $58,000 one more time. My mind I think I am the smartest investor in the plan, the mistake I made. And I recommend this to all of you to pay attention to. I've written a book called how to think bigger than you ever thought I could think in a citapes with Nightingale Conant and it's on Audible. All that. Anyhow, the point is we should have bought all the East Icelip. Haven't you felt that way once in a while, right?
Yes. We should have bought everything. Yes. When we could have and it was.
All like $2,000 down. I could have bought the whole damn place. I had enough cash flow. That's the point, is if you got cash flow and I'll just venture out to say you and I have talked privately, there's going to be another crash coming and the market's going to be available and it's not just for Grant Cardone or Ken McElroy to go buy 8,000 properties all at once, each of us. I'm not saying anyone should do that. Figure out what you want. 10, 50, 100. Like I teach in this book we teach you get two copies. One for you and your business partner. Ask my partner, church partner. But go over every question. One of the first questions, the size of your question determines the size of your result. So people come up to me because I do money Seminars like you have and they say, well, I want more money. So I pull a quarter out of my pocket and say, jason, here's a quarter.
There's more money.
That's not what I want. What are you. Who are you kidding? I said, well, that's what you said. You got to write it on a three by five card. I'm so happy and glad that I'm earning whatever it is. 100,000 a year, a million a year and 100,000 years. 250 work days, $400 a day, and the richest salesman ever said, look, Mark, if your kid's life depended on it, could you earn? It's 1 0, man. 4,000 a day for kids life. 4,000 times 250 is a million. Next year I made a million. It's just, it's state of mind creates state of result. So if your state of mind is it's impossible for me to buy real estate with no money done, then they need to study with you, right?
Yeah, right. It's amazing opportunities. But you know, we as people, we talk ourselves out of things. We have these self sabotaging behavior behaviors. We have this limited mindset at times. We all do this at one time or another. Hopefully we overcome as much of this as possible. What is it really about overall? Is this a matter of self talk? Is it a matter of, you know, we've been told we have all these limitations. Give us some of the Mark Victor Hansen sort of real keys there.
Oh, I love it. So in our little book, ask the bridge from your dreams, your destiny. And we think everybody was coded with a great destiny at birth. Right? And your job is to discover it. But what happens is people get stuck in. I'm a garbage man. I'm a school teacher. I'm a medical doctor. Come on.
They define themselves.
Yeah. And they haven't found who they really are by going deep and asking the questions. And then what you're asking about is we write the second chapter, Seven roadblocks. First roadblock is self worth fullness. And we got a great story about my friend who you know very well, Bob Proctor, who's 87 and you know, this year he'll make his billionth dollar, right?
He's been on the show? Yeah, yeah.
Oh, you've had him on the show.
Yep.
Okay, good. Well, Bob and I can go through his story, but it's self worth, Right. And what if I ask Jason, he tells me to go to heck. Well, that probably won't happen because you're such a nice guy. But most People subliminate. Next one is fear. Then you got doubt. Then you got naivete. You don't know what you don't know. Right. And that's why I'm so good, because I'm always naive. And I'm 74 and going to live be 127, and there's a lot I want to do. It's all in writing. I got 7,000 goals in writing. I say you got to write your.
So. So you said you're always naive. So is it almost. Is that a good strategy right there to make. To be intentionally naive? Because then you're more curious and you don't come into the room thinking, well, I already know all this. You can learn stuff, right?
Yeah. Like, we just had dinner with our mutual friend Russ Gray and Russell Gray and his new beloved. You know, he wants to write a book with our company, Mark Victorhandsonlibrary.com called Curiosity Occurred. Now, we came up with a much better title for him, but just like I did for you. Rich investor is it. What happens is everybody gets stuck in one of these seven roadblocks. Pattern paralysis. And the last one's disconnection, you know? Well, I didn't know a guy like Jason. I can't have him help me with my real estate or whatever. If you're disconnected, you got to get reconnected. And the whole Covid confinement cocoon, from my point of view, has disconnected us more. It's disconnected. You go to a restaurant and the kids are all sitting with each other with their cell phone.
Yeah.
In China, for. I've been to China 80 times. The guys have two cell phones that be walking with me and their cell phone go, whoa, whoa, whoa. Put your cell phone away. Like, as you know, I got five kids and six grandkids. When we're together, nobody, including grampy, gets to have a cell phone out and talk. I mean, you and I have sat at meals together and had a joyous time, but nobody was allowed to use a cell phone, as you may remember.
Yeah. It's the phone addiction is a true sickness. I mean, it really is. Yeah.
And yet, let's do the bottom of this blue screen before you go to sleep at night. Prevents you from sleeping.
Right.
Every doctor that knows anything will tell you that. And the top sleep doctors, one of my close friends, Dr. Lou Tartaglia.
Yeah. It resets your pineal gland and makes you think that it's daytime. So definitely avoid those screens so you can sleep well because sleep incredibly important to overall good health and success. Yeah, absolutely.
The other thing about sleep is before you go to sleep, what we're teaching in our Ask book is program yourself to what you want. I'll first of all do the book title and then I'll do everybody else. But the book titled Jack and I When we wanted Chicken Soup for the Soul, which looks like this. And everyone's seen it. I mean, you know, because everyone's got a couple of them in their house in our respective homes. I was in Newport beach at the time, he was in Santa Barbara. And we get mega best selling title, mega best selling title, mega best selling title, Megabyte. 400 times before you go to sleep, because your subconscious never sleeps. And he calls me at 2:58 in the morning. And it was that year 1989, before. Right. Just before the breakthrough called computers and laptops and all the cell phones. And he woke up the whole house. One of my daughters was becoming a vet and oh my God, 88 animals on one acre just went nuts. They just thought, happy days are here again. It must be time to get up. And it's 2:58 in the morning. Jack says, chicken soup. I said, for the soul. We both got goosebumps, chili bumps, God bumps. We knew that was it. I'm sharing that because if that.
In other words, you were trying to think of a name for this book series. And then at 2:58 in the morning. There, there. The name came after the programming, right?
Yeah, Right. Because you got to do. It's called Thought Command. So if you want to buy a piece of real estate and get this piece of real estate. I'm going to get this piece of real estate. You got to be in the present tense. I am owning. Whether it's a single family, a multifamily duplex in a quadruple X, whether it's 100 units, whatever it is, you got to own it before you get it. And the same thing before the loan. When you go into. Assuming you're borrowing from a banker rather than a private equity, you go, I got the loan. I got the loan. I got the loan. Because if you take ownership of it, your energy goes out in the universe, consciousness goes into subconscious, into superconscious, into God conscious. I know that's a very big model for people creating wealth, but that's the model, I believe.
Yeah, that's great. So you would endorse the idea of using affirmations, right? Definitely. Powerful.
Well, let's do it. When I come in out of bankruptcy, because there's a lot of people listening that are hanging on by their fingernails. When I learned the principle, I'd read the Magic of Belief by Claude Bristol. I did the thought form. Back then, I only wanted on $400 a day, 200 days selling seminars. And before I went to sleep, I said, 400. 400. I'm going to earn 400. 400 a week. So exciting. Next day, I'm out selling insurance companies that I like. I'm the biggest book. I train more people in Metropolitan than anyone at that time. A name came to me that never heard of a company I'd never heard of, because God in you is totally available to everything. So what you got to do is. It said, Bill Widener in the middle of night. I was smart enough to always have paper next to bed. Write it down. And it said, state Mutual, Another insurance company I'd never heard of. This day, I'm walking into Metropolitan and Aupog, Long Island, New York. I mean, when you start using your mind right, positively and correctly, which is what we're teaching, and ask which very few people do, miracles happen. So this miracle, it says, bill Widener, state neutral. Well, I was going to go to Metropolitan, but I walk in the office, it's lunch hour, because I was doing four seminars a day, a thousand a year, and Tony Robbins and I were the only two guys ever did that. When we talked one time, you know, for three years, to begin and get good, you got to do a lot if you're going to get good at something. It said, bill Widener, State Mutual. I walk in, there's nobody at the front desk. I walk straight to his office. He said, within five minutes, because I was so enthusiastic, he gladly gave me the check. He said, I didn't even care if you came back. You just made me feel so good.
Was that your $400 goal right there?
Yeah, my $400 goal. It gave me a check for $400 because I was doing seminars at $100 each. Four seminars, Prospect, Present Good work habits and clothes. And I said, do you want to cut the check in this case, Widener, or you have your secretary cut it? He said, she's not here, so I'll cut a check. And I walked out. I prepay. You got to prepay for what you want.
So the danger there is that we limit ourselves by saying, for, in this example, $400, right? Not half a billion chicken soup books and the many, many millions of dollars that came from that. Right? So teach us something about how we craft an affirmation or a goal for that matter. Are they the same they're two separate things.
A goal is a decision to the future that has a timeline and a result. So the goal. Back to chicken soup. We said we'd sell a million and a half a year and a half. We did. We started June 28, 1993. By Christmas next year, a million and a half. I had written 5 million. Then I wrote that we'll sell 10 million a year. And then I said we'd start selling 15 million a year, which nobody had ever done.
And that's the number of books, a.
Number of books that we'd sell. And the money is. I can take you through that, too, but. And I can see now why, you know, we had 144 publishers reject us because I said the top of it. Said, mark will figure out how to sell a billion books because I've been marketing and selling since I was 9. I believe in myself. Back to affirmations. You've got to work on yourself affirmatively. I declare I'm going to buy a piece of real estate. I declare I'm going to be healthy. The point I'm making is if somebody had come up to me, if you'd been my mentor and said, hey, look, kid, I'll help you get your first piece of real estate, I would have gone, I'm in. And I don't even know what we're talking about, but I just figured out, right? And that's what I've done my whole life.
Mark, what do you say about that, about us holding ourselves back? The paralysis of analysis concept? I think that's a really common issue for people.
First of all, I agree. So let me just look, overview it, the macro, the four principles. Figure out what you want, which very few people know. So if you've got a mastermind partner, you got to go 50 times in a row, jason, what do you want? And I don't judge you. You just got to go through it. But by number 50, we're going to get to the truth of who you really are. Number two, you got to put it in writing because that's spiritual law. I didn't make the law. I just do it. Three, you got to visualize, so you got to see it before you can have it, like buying a real estate. And four, you got to have a dream team, a mastermind. Now, Jim Carrey's dad told him, jimmy, whatever you want, write your goal. And Jim Carrey, I think you probably know this, wrote a goal, I will make $10 million on a movie, and I will do it in the next two Years.
I think he actually wrote a check to himself.
Yeah, he wrote a check and he carried it in his pocket for $10 million. And right before his dad died, he'd already showed dad the check. He said, dad, I've just gotten that. He took the simulated check when his dad died. I think this is poetic justice. His dad died and then he check in his pocket. The principle is a principle. Whether you're an actor, whether you're a real estate investor, whether you're a business builder. And like I said in the beginning of this, I think you ought to have multiple businesses. And then, you know, if it works for you, get a book too. So that's good, right?
So mark those four principles. What are those again?
Number one, what do you really want? And this is in your heart of hearts, this is in your soul of souls. This is in the depth of your being. This is like we're saying in asking you were coded to do something. And how do I know that? Well, we're watching all the stuff by Mellon Thomas and the near death experiences. Every one of these guys that died and go to the other side and get sent back universally, 100% say exactly the same thing. Sorry, bubba, you're not allowed to be here. You weren't done, you didn't do what you're supposed to do. And you be at the end of your life and regret what you could have done and didn't, and go to the grave with your music in your art in you invention in you businesses in you real estate ownership in you taking good care of your family, your kids, your grandkids and future projects. So figure out what you want, put it in writing. And minimum, like when you heard me talk, I was saying 101 goals, but never, I got the milk, I got the eggs, I got the butter. And cross it out. No, no, you write down victory in purple. That's God's highest color. Top of the electromagnetic spectrum, top of the rainbow, all that. Third, you got to see it before you can have it. Like, I'm bankrupt. And I saw myself as a great inspiring speaker. Then I saw myself, you know, creating books. And I said, well, wait a second, if I'm going to be something as an author, why don't I become world's best selling author? Because that fits the zone. I want and I'm nowhere near done. I got a lot of books I'm writing right now personally and with other people because just for me, it's fun. And we're still, as you know, we talk to you about helping Us buy more real estate. Because I really believe it is the hard asset of assets. And then last, you got to have a mastermind like your collective. If you have money out there and you have time, come and sample, test, taste the collective. Because the mastermind was created by Andrew Carnegie. Carnegie read through the New Testament with a third grade education and said, holy cow. Jesus never did a miracle, water and wine and canaan, until he had 12 disciples synchromesh going the same thing. And then he turned water into wine. The first miracle. The point is you mastermind with people that can do it. And Andrew Carnegie said, look, two or more gathered in his spirit, spirit, spirit of cooperative harmony. Form a third new invincible mind. You got to have a team to get your dream. Team means together. Everyone accomplishes miracles, right? You and I, it's a miracle that you're alive. Have you ever thought about that?
Yeah, it is every day. We should really appreciate that. It's an incredible thing.
I mean, you got air to breathe, you got sunshine outside, and you're healthy, you're happy. You got eyes that see. And there are a lot of people who can't see stuff. I mean, like in our little last book, we told, I think one of the great 26 interviews with superstars. But one of the guys who I wrote the Ford to the ultimate Gift, I said, this book is so good, it has got to be a movie. Well, he made 100 million on the movie because I wrote.
I love that movie. The ultimate gift. You know, I just saw that about a month ago. What a great movie. Yeah, yeah.
And what, by the way, in case you don't know, he was a champion football player recruited. And then they said, you're going to be blind in six months. So he said, he finishes his story in our book. I now write stories that I can't read and make movies I can't watch. And the first story we got in this is called Michaela. I called Jim just this last week and I say, look, Crystal, you've read the Fable of Michaela. We now have somebody who wants to do it. Would you write the screenplay with it? Well, hell, he's one of the, I'm gonna say one of the three best screenplay writers in my mind in the world. Like you just saw the movie and fell in love with it. Now you're gonna want to watch everything he's done. And he's only done 50, but he's a beginner.
Yeah. Wow, that's. That's incredible. Mark, how do you keep this kind of energy and zest for life. Is it the four step method you just mentioned or is it something else? I mean, you just seem to be full of endorphins all the time, my friend.
Let's just do number one. If you're doing what you want, remember the first law, even in think grow rich is desire. Desire is what takes you higher and higher and higher. And I'm doing everything that I desire and I don't do much that I don't desire. Like this morning because I was doing your thing and we did another podcast for this. You know, I went and exercised to make sure I got rid of the stress because all of us have problems. And you got three ways to handle your stress. If you got desire, there's eustress, EU stress, which is where I live, move and my being.
That's. That's the good stress.
Yeah, the good stress. Then there's daily day, you know, I got a flat tire, I got a dental appointment, I got to go see the dentist or whatever. And then there's de stress. If you don't work on making sure you live and you stress, you go to de stress and you go, oh God, the world's going to hell. It's never going to make it. Everything's falling apart because you can look at either part of the world because it's always there. Because like Bob Proctor teach the law of polarity, you always got to have black to have white, you got to have good to have bad, you got to have 12 to have short. I mean, we're in a dualistic system now. There's only one God, but God built this system so you could see you and I are always volitionally have will and have choices. And I choose to be happy, I choose to be healthy, I choose to be prosperous, I choose to be abundant. I choose to keep creating more and more riches because I want to do a lot of stuff and I want to do a lot of stuff and help. You know, I'm big. I won the Horatio Alger Award, as you said in the introduction, which is.
Horatio Alger is the rags to riches story. Yeah, right.
Yeah. And that means you've been excessively philanthropic. And now because I don't like the way the college system is working. Up until now, we've given 10,000 kids scholarships, right? 10 of us winning in the Supreme Court a year. And then we come and help. So we've created a brand new thing because of myself and my best student is that we give money to college kids, go to scholarships, we give technical schools. So you can learn a trade and make even more money. And then the third one we've created is to help every young kid be an entrepreneur. And we're doing the model of Peter Thiel did. Peter Thiel pays 100 grand not to go to college. So I'm the first. Crystal and I are the first funders. And out of 10,000 alumni kids that have gone through college with 3.8, we found 15. And we just started, and we're going to do business with them. And if they make $100 million, like four people out of Thiel's first ten have already become billionaires. I mean, just in four years.
That's amazing. Why?
Because when you have a mastermind, you become invincible, unstoppable. Now, obviously, Peter Thiel's on top of it. Obviously, Peter Thiel is partners with Elon Musk and every one of the 140 business.
He's the smartest guy in Silicon Valley. I've said that that many times. Peter Thiel's. He's great. Yeah.
By the way, you and I are in 100% agreement. I've never met either one of them, but I plan on meeting them both. And the fact of the matter is, that's what we're doing with these kids. So, you know, at Horatio, we got to have a mentor, mentee relationship. Obviously, I'm the older guy, so I'm the mentor. But this kid named Nathan Nguyen, he's Vietnamese, his dad was a captain in the military, is a prisoner of war for eight years. His mother, he was a six kid, he fed him one egg a day for all those years. That's basically the nutrition the kid got, other than what he could find on the street. And the kid ends up graduating well. But when he is ready to go to college and we're giving him the $25,000 scholarship, he becomes my mentee, and he comes to all my seminars. Well, as a freshman, he started a company, hired 20 kids at USC, and made $5 million a year with music, instrumental music, electronic music, instrumental savings, or some title like that. Anyhow, Nathan and I start this thing to help every kid become an entrepreneur while they're going through college or not go to college, and that's their choice. And now every Horatio person. And we're going to be at Horatio here in April.
Yeah. Well, Mark, just incredible stuff. So is Ask your most recent book?
Yeah, Ask is our most recent book. And once you read it with a partner, we Hope, go to askthebookclub.com and join us free. And we'll do a seminar with you, Chris and I, because we want everyone to grow up, be master askers. See, the point is creating wealth. The difference between somebody who creates a little wealth and somebody who creates a lot of wealth is somebody who asks or didn't ask. I don't know your story, particularly word for word, but I got an idea. You've asked a gazillion people a gazillion questions about real estate, including all the people we've talked about today. Is that true?
Yep. Yes, definitely. Definitely.
And what you are is you've imploded all the greatest ideas or greatest wisdom. And then, you know, you bought a piece of property, got successful, they had some losses, but more wins than losses because the big guy. I just read last night again, Christ said the harvest is great, but the laborers are few. In other words, you gotta labor. And consistency is the name of the game. Ask yourself, are you consistent? The reason I sell more books is there's never a time I'm not consistent. I mean, am I happy everybody reads a chicken soup book or any of my books? The answer is yes. Do I know that some few of them, 20 or 30%, will read everything I got if they got time? And they keep buying it because Mark Victor Hanson's name, logo and trademark is on it.
You've got so many books and such an incredible, just huge body of work. What are your top three favorite books of your own?
You got to have a copy of One Minute Millionaire if you're crazy, if you've got kids, grandkids, I would ask you to consider getting this one. I love this book. The Richest Kids in America. I interviewed 21 kids that made over a million dollars before they were 19. And now, well, I just told you about the little kid I'll interview in the next edition of this. But every kid should know that entrepreneurship exists because there's no. It's a little. We say imagination creates reality, right? And you know that line. And Einstein said it, I've said it, everybody said it. The point is all these kids have made fortunes. There's a little picture of all of them on the back lensletter. And I. But the point is, is that you just, you just have a ball doing all this stuff. And then Mitzi Perdue is writing my biography. I don't. We don't know exactly the title that will be on it, but I'll send you the introduction that she's written. And I just go, holy cow. I didn't think I was that important because, you know, whatever one in A million people get a biography written on them. And I never expected. She brought it to me and said, you know, you've got a really remarkable career. You've been everywhere, you've been with everybody. You've climbed all the highest mountains, Machu Picchu, Killy, Kilimanjaro, you know, Fuji and all that. And you've met everybody that's anybody and most of the world leaders. Don't you think we ought to talk about it? And she's interviewed like 153 people so far and written a stellar book. So I have to say right now it's going to be fun to have my own biography, which she wants to bring it out before June. So we got a publisher that wants to do it. So that'll be way cool. And if you want to get interviewed for that, she would love to interview you. How's that?
Oh yeah, well, I'd love to. So connect me with Mitzi, that would be great. Well, Mark, we could talk forever about all of these things. I mean, you, you've just had such an incredible career, whether it be investing or mindset, and certainly in the book publishing business. And we got to talk about doing a fiction version of my new book which we talked about last week a little bit. So that's@markvictorhansenlibrary.com you can find out about that, about authoring, but what other website or resource would you like to share with people? Because before you go, well, those three.
If you want to write a book and have us ghosted for you. And look, the big market which I've missed my whole life until recently, six months ago, is fiction. Last year during COVID it did 47 billion. And we're going to take that market over. We will ghost the book for you, but we take your principles, your philosophies, your ideas, and we'll make it into an enormous book. In your case like an Atlas Shrugged or Richest man in Babylon or you know, one of those type zones of books. And you haven't read the Alchemist, you'll see what I'm talking about then askthebookclub.com and then if you just want to see who I am, just go to YouTube and watch some of my videos and we are making infinitely more. This is the year that I'm going to make them because we're going to be having more fun than I've ever had in my whole life. First of all, like you said, I've read 50,000 books, been to everybody's seminars, befriended a Lot of the greats in the world, in every discipline. And I want to talk about them and share because everybody has greatness, genius in them, but it's hidden until I think, until you got a mentor. And I'm not saying I need to be your mentor. All I want to do is open the door so you can go find him or her. If I'm not that person. Would you? Didn't you have a lot of mentors to get you where you are?
Oh, of course. We all did. Yeah. Yeah, you get everybody has mentors or you better have mentors.
There's no such thing thing as a self made millionaire in my experience, that's for sure. Teaching them the game.
Yep. Absolutely. Well, Mark, we got to have you back on because there's so much more we could talk about. But thank you so much for sharing your experience and your wisdom with us today. We appreciate it. I will look forward to seeing you in person again real soon, buddy.
