Welcome to the Longevity and Biohacking Show. This is your host, Fernando Aries in partnership with the Hartman Media Company, filling in for Jason Hartman. Today it is my pleasure to welcome Jim Poole. Jim is the CEO and President of Solace Life Sciences. They are makers of the amazing biohacking tool called NuCalm. NuCalm lowers stress and improves sleep quality without drugs. This tool actually interrupts the stress response in the brain and it guides people to a very deep relaxed state. I had a chance to meet Jim and I have experienced the effects of Newcom myself and I can only tell you that they are mind boggling and I mean this almost literally. Nucalm is used by professional sports teams, health professionals, athletes. They are achieving more satisfying results with nucalm. So I'm really looking forward to talking to Jim. So with no further ado, welcome Jim. It is a pleasure to talk to you again, Fernando.
Thank you. I appreciate being here and appreciate the listeners who are going to hear a great story.
So I met you a few weeks ago at the Biohacking conference and we had a chance to chat about nucalm and learn more about what it can do to basically enhance our lives. I tried it and I was very impressed. Can you tell us about nucalm and the amazing effects that I experienced and effects that it has in one's mind and longevity?
I think I love the term mind boggling because I tried nucalm. It boggled my mind as well.
Yes.
You know, when we go to conferences, it's a really nice place for us to create a lot of value for attendees. So say we go to the Biohacking conference and there's 3,000 attendees, many of whom traveled to get there. So they're suffering a little jet lag. They're trying to compartmentalize whatever they left behind in their office and home life. And they're being overstimulated all day with new content and dynamic speakers and a great exhibit show floor with all this technology. So you take all that stimulation, you take jet lag, you take poor sleep, dining out, whatever we're doing, and you come to the New Calm recovery lounge. So we applied nucalm to you, Fernando, in about two minutes. And it's the easiest thing you're ever going to do, and it may be the most profound thing. So within a few minutes, you were literally meditating like a monk lying in a chair in the open space of an exhibit hall in Pasadena, California.
I agree 100%. There were a mixture of some strange mental associations and daydreams, childhood memories mixed in. It was a very, very deep, relaxed state. No question about it.
So why does that happen and how does it occur? So what Newcomb is doing fundamentally is it is creating deep relaxation. And we do this in several ways. And I'll get into the science later, but really the key element here is to be able to separate the mind from the body. Our mind is so powerful. The human resilience is so powerful. We've all heard stories of incredible feats when we were in fight or flight, in danger, etc. So in New calm, within a few minutes, we're separating the mind's ability to control the body so that we can help the body heal. But by doing this, Fernando, we're liberating your mind to go to places it has always wanted to go to. But we control where it goes. Meaning time restraints, expectations, deadlines, fears, insecurity, self doubt, interpersonal conflict, all the things that run our cortisol and our adrenaline on a daily basis. We shut down and we say, we're not interested in your stress response. We're interested in liberating your mind to go where it wants to go. So when you had cool associations and memories, literally, we're going deep into your subconscious. That's one aspect of the New Calm experience. And we tell people the physiological outcome and benefit of New Calm is being that of a deeply meditating monk. But it is not meditation. We are separating the mind from the body. We are listening something called a hypnagogic dissociative state, meaning that we are dissociating from time and space. So when you were new calming in Pasadena, Fernando, it is invariable that you lost sense of time and space. And when you got up from your experience, you had no idea how long you were there.
True.
And to do that, what we want to accomplish is separating the mind so that the body can engage in healing. And the body heals by what's called a parasympathetic nervous system dominant state. And it's funny, the timing is perfect because two days from now, most people in the United States will be suffering from major parasympathetic nervous system dominance around 4:00 local time. And that is because we will engorge ourselves with an incredible dinner.
And when we engorge ourselves, it's not necessarily the tryptophan, which is a precursor to serotonin. Okay, that's. But it's all the food we're eating and really commanding the body's attention to the digestive tract and basically moving our brain away. So think about how everyone's gonna feel around 4:30 in the afternoon on Turkey Day, just two days from now. And probably you're gonna be lying on your back on somebody's floor, you know, a family member or your own house. It's gonna be filled with family members, some of whom you love, some of them you disdain. And you don't care. You're probably going to unbutton your top button so you can breathe and you're going to watch football. And you don't care where you are.
You don't care about time. Literally, you're in this beautiful place that is parasympathetic nervous system dominance. And we only achieve this in three manners. One, our digestive tract is commanding all of our body's attention as we try to digest too much food. Two, just before you fall into deep sleep, it's called the theta restorative. And three, if you are a monastic monk, meditator. So the parasympathetic nervous system dominance is the rest side of the equation of the autonomic nervous system. Now, the autonomic nervous system manages our stress response, which is adrenaline and cortisol. Fight, flight, fear, anxiety, stress. And the opposite is the rest and digest. Now, Fernando, when we can elicit a powerful parasympathetic dominant state, what we're really doing is activating the body's physiology. We're activating what's called the vagus nerve. And the vagus nerve is the longest nerve in the human body. And it innervates in the brain stem, goes past all your visceral organs and all the way down to your feet. And it's the communication pathway of the autonomic nervous system. And so it elicits the connectivity between your heart and your lungs. So when nucalm within a few minutes, you probably notice your respiration rate slowing down and the depth of your breath increasing. We heal as humans when we slow down our brain, slow down cortisol, activate the heart and the lungs and achieve diaphragmatic breathing. And diaphragmatic breathing, the ultimate diaphragmatic breathing pace is one breath every 10 seconds. So for all you listeners out there, you know when you're stressed out or you're adrenaline focused, or you're moving, moving, moving, you know you're breathing shallow, you know you're not getting enough oxygen and your brain is an organ hog, it's going to demand all the oxygen that you're getting. So that's what we're doing in new calm. We separate the mind, we allow your mind to wander to places it wants to go. And by doing that, we dissociate the mind from the body, activate the autonomic nervous system, vagus nerve, increase your breathing, your oxygen rich red blood cells, and that's the biohack, allowing your body to heal through oxygen rich red blood cells.
Now Jim, walk our audience through what a session look like. You know the logistics of it, what's the hardware being used, what's the software being used and so forth.
Wonderful. There are four components to NuCalm. Your brain and body communicate in two ways, chemical messaging and electrical messaging. And NuCalm was awarded the only patent in the world. Not only because it's highly efficacious and proven, but I believe because it's the only technology I know of that uses both communication pathways. So the chemical messaging of nucalm is incorporated in a cream that you apply to your neck. So you take one pump of cream, you rub it next to your throat on the left side, you take the second pump of cream, you rub it next to your throat on the right side. This cream contains amino acids, naturally occurring amino acids, and really it's the fuel that your body needs for relaxation. Now Fernando, we're not eating food like we used to. We don't have balance in our food. We have a lot of metabolic acidosis and too much acid in our diet. So this is the opposite of adrenaline. The amino acid is called an inhibitory neurotransmitter and it's literally the fuel that your body needs. It's hypoallergenic, it's non addictive and it's all natural. It crosses a blood brain barrier, which is illustrative of how safe it is. The second component is a stimulation device and it's a handheld device. It's a micro current stimulation that patches go behind your ear. And this device is really important because your brain and your body are not very good at extracting nutrients from supplementation. It's very talented at extracting nutrients from food, but not good from supplementation. And our cream falls into that same trap. So this device is a device that helps cross the blood brain barrier and more importantly, lowers the cell wall membrane of the receptor sites. It's kind of like you drive into your driveway and you go to pull your car in the garage and the garage door is open. That's what we need to do. If you try to pull your car in and the garage door is closed, you're not going to have any efficacy. So this CES device, this stimulation device opens the garage door so that the receptor site of the neurotransmitters are open and achieve success. Now this is doing something really important. It's slowing down what's called the amygdala, HPA axis and adrenaline. So if we can slow down adrenaline and the stress response, we can manage the brainwave function better. So that's the first two steps of NuCalm. It takes about two minutes. You apply the cream, you apply the patches, you turn it on. Then comes the fun stuff. We are using physics, and we're talking about the most sophisticated neuroacoustic software ever created and patented. We're using what's called nonlinear oscillations, vibrations, disparate pitch, disparate frequency matrices, and what's called binaural signal processing. It's very, very complicated. It's very sophisticated. It takes several years for a neuroscientist to develop it. But the whole purpose is to have an underlying neuroacoustic signal that presents your mind with a pattern that your mind follows. Now, our brains are so sophisticated, it's absolutely incredible to learn about the brain. And what we know about the brain is that we're constantly trying to figure out patterns. Our brain is the best cheater on the planet. It always tries to find shortcuts. It has to think about all the stimulation that would come across your brain if you didn't have filters. So it's always looking for a shortcut and it's always looking for patterns. Well, in new calm, we're going to present your mind with a pattern and your mind is going to follow it into what's called the alpha and theta zone. Which is a slower brainwave function. Now Alpha is 12Hz down to 8Hz and synonymous with relaxation, creativity and being in the zone. And a lot of people meditate would call that being in state. Theta is the coup de gras of healing and that's 7 hertz to 4 hertz just above sleep. And the theta brainwave function is the only time that the body's in a place where it cleans toxins out of its cells and it restores you on a cellular level. So the theta piece is really pivotal for the healing aspect of nucalm. So you're going to hear music. This music is beautifully architected by our sound engineer and music producer Dan Celine. But the music is completely inconsequential. Fernando all is serving as a carrier wave and a distraction. What you can't hear is the physics and neuro acoustics. That's what's doing the work. Let me give you a good example. It's very sophisticated. The terms that I use, nonlinear oscillation and pitch and frequency and binaural signal processing. It's complicated, I get that. So let's use an analogy. If you were to download a song today that's maybe a four minute song, it might be five megabytes of information, one track, the track you probably listened to at the biohacking conference is 797 megabytes of information that your brain is forced to process. That's the magic of nucalm. And it's very powerful, very effective, predictable, fast acting and safe. It's fast acting because when we manage the chemical signaling of the brain through the biochemistry, your mind is more at ease already. And then it follows this pattern in a very strong entrainment principle. And the last piece is simply an eye mask. So for all of us who are not neuroscientists and not really that engaged in trying to learn the complexities of applied neuropsychobiology, it's really simple. I will get up, I'll get back in my bed, I'll apply the cream, put the patches on, apply an eye mask, turn the headset on, lie in my bed, take a deep breath and off goes my journey. That's it.
Yeah. At the end of the day, the feeling that you get is really the end result. I want to go back to some of the more technical aspects of what you are describing, which is just amazing. The technology that you have behind it, the patents that you have behind it. But let me, I guess take a step up and when you talk, it seems to me this is More of a human technology type product. And it can be used in several industries. And I know you have examples of dental patients that use nucalm. Olympic athletes. Walk us through some of the most significant benefits in different industries that can use nucalm and have seen significant results.
That's a great question, and thank you for bringing that up. This is a human technology. We are living in a place in a time of great anxiety, transition, confusion, fear, stress. We're not in balance. We're not in balance with ourselves. We're not in balance with our significant others. We're not in balance with our families. We're not in balance with our communities. The world is out of balance. So the time and the poignancy of the arrival of Newcomb to the planet couldn't be better. We are literally solving a really important problem. But we are one company, you know, so we're a company headquartered in Delaware. We can't solve the world's problems in one fell swoop. So we have to be industry specific. The most important work we're doing emotionally and the most rewarding, inspired, is with metastatic stage 4 cancer. And we work with the Comprehensive Cancer Wellness Program and one of the world's leading psychoneuroimmunologists, Dr. Janet Ranicke. What we do with cancer, Fernando, is we're not solving cancer, we're not curing cancer. So you're given a diagnosis of stage four terminal illness, and you're immediately consumed with fear, as you should be. The medical process of trying to work through hospitals and chemotherapy and radiation and oncologists and primary care physicians creates a lot of confusion. There's a lot of anger associated with the lack of justice of why that person, you know, got cancer. So we're dealing with so many emotional, physiological, psychological impacts on us, it literally creates this stressed out human being. And what people don't realize is that stress is going to accelerate the end of their life. Sure, if they can't slow down, they will live less. Okay, so that's where Newcomb comes in. And I tell people when I first meet them during these programs, I said, I'm not here to cure you of cancer. I'm here to give you the gift of something that you're not getting. And it's called peace of mind. Even if it's a minute of peace of mind. And it's called restorative sleep. It's called allowing the body to be positioned to heal and fight. And if it can't heal and fight, at least for you to pass into the next world, with dignity. Okay, that is exceptionally profound. And how do we do it? We do it the same way we do with everybody. We immediately, through the new calm experience, shut down cortisol and adrenaline and reverse this seesaw and raise the parasympathetic rest and digest. There's a comment made by a woman who's very close to a good friend of mine, and she has cancer. And the profundity of her statement will illustrate why this is so inspired for us. She said, you know, I have stage four cancer, and the only time that I forget I have cancer is the 45 minutes I'm on Nuke Home.
That's an incredible testimonial.
It's incredible. And so that's very powerful. We've been working with stage 4 metastatic cancer and other stages of cancer for 5 years with significant results simply because we have a technology that's safe, fast, predictable, and can relax the body and allow them to fight.
Yeah, very good. Very good. I mean, that is a great use of the product for such an important end result that you can get. Now, talk to me about the athletes for a little bit. I know professional athletes have used the system for recovery and also improving sleep. And I know that the Chicago Blackhawks attributed, I guess, two of their Stanley cup wins to using NuCalm. How much did it impact them? You know, from what you hear, we've.
Had incredible success in professional athletics. You know, professional athletes are the top of their craft. They're genetically predisposed to greatness. And really, the difference between success and failure in professional athletes is a microcosm, and most of it comes down to what's between your ears. So what we don't do in this culture, Fernando, is we don't give our athletes any credit. We don't think about their lifestyle. We just admire them and think they have it all going for them, and they really don't. For those of you on the call who know any professional athletes, their lifestyle is not as glamorous as you think it is. They're bombarded with a tremendous amount of stimulation, influence. They have to manage expectations not only of themselves, of their family members, of their spouses, of their children, of their agents, of their accountants, of their lawyers, of their teammates, of their ownership, and then millions of fans around the world. For me, I work every day, but I don't have an audience watching what I do. I'm not under a microscope. If I make a mistake, it's not played on ESPN ad nauseam. So the pressure is incredible. Most of these kids are young they're not trained in mindfulness. They're not experts in meditation, Tai chi, yoga, breathing exercises. They're just doing their thing and just trying to survive. They travel all the time. They play at a very high level at weird times a day. Like last night, the Monday night football game was in Mexico at 7,500ft above sea level.
So lack of oxygen plays a role there too.
Exactly. So when you think about the stress involved, you know that if we can come in and provide these ladies and gentlemen with a stress management tool, we're going to make a significant impact. So when the Blackhawks said, hey, without Newcomb, we wouldn't won the Stanley cup, that got our attention because that's a very profound statement. And we said, why do you say that? So Mike Gapski, the trainer who's been with him for 29 years, said, it's real simple, guys. The playoffs is a battle of attrition. We have to play four, seven game series. You get very intimate and very angry with the other team. And it's brutal and the pace is brutal. And I've been doing this long enough to know if my players weren't using nucalm once to twice a day every day, their muscle recovery, their healing, their inflammation, their jet lag would not have been recovered. And the toughest part of my job is when I walk down to Coach Q's office and tell them who's available to skate that night. And nucalm made a profound difference, literally by being able to relax or meditate like a monk before you play and after you play. It's going to improve muscle recovery. It's going to remove lactic acid simply through oxygen rich red blood cells. It's going to reduce inflammation response. It's going to help with restorative sleep, which in turn helps with healing. So the key for nucalm is several things for athletes. Number one, it's the physical side of improving muscle recovery, reducing inflammation, improving healing. And the mental side of getting a good night's sleep, being able to restore mentally and to be able to erase your mind from anything bad that happened the night before. You know, when we're stressed out or we get a poor night's sleep, who likes waking up at five or six in the morning the next day and having a long day ahead when you didn't get a restful night's sleep, you're immediately, you know, fighting up an uphill battle. That's the power of new calm. Now, currently, Fernando, we work with 29 professional sports teams. I was just in Miami doing a big MMA fight. We work with a lot of MMA fighters who seem to be some of the highest adopters of new column because of the meditation aspect of martial arts. We work with the United States Tennis Association. Three weeks ago, I was in London and Manchester working with Manchester City. Atletico Madrid presented a big award at the Premier League. There was at Chelsea, Arsenal, Everton, Manchester United. So we are expanding a lot in sports. We like working with sports because we like the opportunity to build awareness of a technology that solves a real problem. And there's very few people I've met who feel like stress and sleep is not a problem in their life or in the life of their spouse, family member, extended friends and family.
It certainly brings a lot of visibility into the product. When you see actual results, you see measurable results. You know, you can see somebody winning a championship or doing much better and having more energy and having quicker recovery. That's very easy to quantify. So that is a very, very good area to be in. And I like your point related to when you come to the pinnacle of a sport, championship game, a lot of the teams, they train very hard physically, but their mental training is lacking. I play sports and I follow some sports, and it always amazes me how much time they spend preparing for a game, a final game, and how little of it is actually mental. And you can see when the team is down by a goal or, you know, whatever sport it is, that sometimes it just breaks down. The clarity isn't there. The awareness is kind of lost. And they go into this fight and fight mode that normally they wouldn't be in if they had proper training. And I can see where Nukom can make a huge difference, as you been describing. So that is very good to hear.
So for our audience, we're probably a cross function of many different verticals. We have many different jobs, occupations, desires. The concept of Newcomb is very simple. It is a tool and a facilitator to allow each of us to effectively manage stress and improve our sleep quality without drugs. The more we habitualize this opportunity, the healthier will become. There's a cumulative benefit to creating deep parasympathetic dominance and deep relaxation on a regular basis. Now, when I'm home, Fernando, I don't feel compelled to use it every day, but on the road, and I'm on the road about 250 days a year, I use it every day. I use it to make up for the sleep debt that I acquire through jet lag and time zone travel. I use it to Ensure that I have good energy. But it's really the restorative nature. Seeing all the data and understanding the science, I know that every minute I'm in new calm, my body is healing and my cells are restoring. And every minute I'm not in new calm, cortisol is breaking down my cellular structure. That's how the world works. So this technology is changing the paradigm of high stress, poor sleep, high stress, poor sleep, high stress, poor sleep, high stress, poor sleep, and the negative impact of that cycle, which is poor emotional wellness, which is poor decision making. No one makes good decisions when you're stressed out, which is poor management of our lifestyle, etc. Well, we change that paradigm and we create good stress management, good restorative sleep. And so you have no stress, good sleep, no stress, good sleep, no stress, good sleep. Guess what happens? You become a better you. You become a better husband, her wife, parent, friend, business person, athlete, cancer patient, addictive disease patient, neurodegenerative disease patient. All this is is a technology that can facilitate and take care of two important issues around restoration, balance and wellness, which is stress management and sleep.
If you use it every day or, you know, whoever uses it very frequently, are there any side effects, any dependency issues that you need to be concerned about with nucalm?
None whatsoever. The way I would look at that, Fernando, it's a great question, is that in the literature, in common sense, you can't over meditate. No one's ever had a meditation injury.
That's a good point.
And what we're doing here is we're simply mimicking the body's natural pathways the body uses to prepare for relaxation. And it's really a shame and a sad indictment on our culture when people get out of nuke home. It's an unfamiliar experience and it really shouldn't be because all it is is rest.
For the cream that you apply. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it has GABA or L theanine in it. Is there any concern with those chemicals? I know these are produced in the brain, but is there any concern from that perspective?
No, you've done your homework and I appreciate that. Gamma aminobutyric acid, or GABA A and GABA B are the body's primary inhibitory neurotransmitters and really important for sleep. Their job is to shut down the adrenal cortex, basically turn off your brain and allow you to sleep. So gaba. You can't overdose on gaba. How the brain works is it'll accept what it wants and needs and it will excrete the rest. So it's all about what's called bioavailability. We present the mind and the brain with gaba and the receptor sites will accept what it wants and move on. The L Theanine is an extract of green tea and helps up regulate the absorption of gaba. So the meticulous nature and design of the proprietary formulation is mind boggling to me. It is expressly designed to slow down adrenaline and do it in an all natural way. Remember, the neuroscientist inventor of NuCalm is a naturopath. We're not going to play in anything that's not going to be naturally occurring for us humans.
Well, I know that an excellent natural GABA booster to get your own body to produce GABA is L Theanine. And this is also found in green tea. And it's known to help you relax and focus. So I can see where this is playing the same role as it does when you're drinking tea and, you know, have enough L, the amine supply to your brain for it to produce enough GABA to put you into this relaxed state. So that makes sense.
It's funny that you bring this up. One of the reasons that we say that Newcomb helps with improved sleep quality is the biochemistry of sleep. Your brain needs melatonin, serotonin and GABA for good sleep. But GABA in the biochemistry of your brain is responsible for anything that is anxiolytic or relaxing. Meaning that every time you take a sip of alcohol, the reason that it's relaxing is it's binding to the GABA A receptor site.
Yes. It triggers the GABA receptors in the brain.
So benzodiazepines bind to the GABA A receptor site, barbiturates bind to the GABA A receptor site. So what do you think is going to happen to your brain chemistry when we present GABA A to the GABA A receptor site? It's going to create a very predictable, relaxing experience. And you're right, GABA is very important and it's critical for our survival.
And again, you're able to increase the bioavailability of that GABA and cross the blood brain barrier through the entire system through the proprietary nature of that cream along with your system. Correct. That's how you can get across.
Exactly. It's the stimulation device in conjunction with the cream itself, is how it's so effective. Exactly.
Excellent. Now I know we're getting to the end of the show. I wanted to ask you though, about price of the Product and availability. You know, what's the business model, where people can get it and how does that work?
So we are a direct company, We're a Delaware privately held company. We've sold direct all over the world. We currently serve seven industries. Aviation, addictive disease, executive performance, dentistry, professional athletics, PTSD and oncology. So you can just call us up, go to the website nucalm.com this is a class 3 prescription only medical device. So what we will typically do is have you get a prescription from your doctor and the prescription is simple. It's NuCalm for sleep and it retails for $5,995. That price is the same anywhere in the world from China to Russia to South America to right here in Delaware. We do have 28 strategic partnerships. And in these partnerships around the world, we have negotiated promotional deals. So if you're, you know, involved with somebody like Tony Robbins or professional sports or addictive disease clinics or oncology, chances are we have some kind of promotional deal which is specific to that partnership and that's it. So you would just call us up and it's so easy to use. And again, the profundity of the accumulation of using this on a regular basis will change your life.
Now do you see consumers buying it directly from you or what's the breakdown of the use? People think through their practitioners or how does it get started with the product? Is this something that they would get a prescription and purchase the product and use it at home?
Yes, that's a great question. Historically this was a Class 3 medical device prescription only highly regulated FDA cleared device and most of our customers were doctors. Last May the seesaw changed and now most of our customers coming to us in the last 18 months, our consumers and typically they'll find out some way somehow and they'll contact us and we simply say hey, okay, contact your doctor and get a prescription. Or you can have a consultation with one of the doctors on our advisory board. We have 49 medical practitioners on our advisory board but it's pretty straightforward. And yes, people use it at home. For me personally, it travels in an easy to use backpack and it goes everywhere. With me. It's my best travel companion, my best friend. It doesn't talk back and it always takes care of me.
Do you have different price SKUs or the one around 6000 is the only one.
The MSRP is always going to be that, that never changes. In our discipline to maintain price integrity, we can't discriminate on price globally because something called the Internet. But like I mentioned, we have 28 strategic partnerships, each of whom have a negotiated promotional price. And it can be anywhere from $1,000 off to $2,000 off. It's all associated with whoever you have a partnership with. Like, for example, at the Bulletproof biohacking conference, I believe we had a meeting special specifically designed for that meeting, and it was like $1,800 off the MSRP.
Yeah, I remember that well. Very good. So people can go to nucalm.com that's n u c a l m dot com. And, you know, now that we're getting to the end of the show, Jim, is there anything else that you want to share with us? Any other links, anything else that people can go to learn more about Nucalm?
Well, nucalm.com is a great place to go. You can also go to newcomblibrary.com.
Performance newcomblibrary.com performance I think the ending message for me is, seven years ago, I took over this company. It was created and founded by a brilliant, compassionate, neuroscientist inventor, naturopath, Dr. G. Blake Holloway. And it clearly has become obvious that this is the purpose that I'm here for. And we are here to change the energy of this planet. Like I mentioned before, right out of balance. It's clearly evident and intuitively obvious to the casual bystander that we're out of balance and we have a technology here that can bring us back into balance. We have done exceptionally gifted, inspired work with some of the sickest humans on Earth and some of the best athletes on Earth.
