It's my pleasure to welcome Budge Collison to the show. He is the president at Infusion Sciences and we're going to talk about health and longevity today. Budge, welcome. How are you?
I'm doing well. Jason, how are you doing?
Good. Give our listeners a sense of geography. Where are you located?
I'm in Annapolis, Maryland today.
Great, good. Tell us how you became interested in this field. I mean, there's so much great stuff going on. It's really a pretty amazing time to be alive with what's happening in, in the world of science and technology.
It's kind of funny. I guess it comes from probably my mother. It's sort of inherited. She's always been interested in anti aging medicine and she was a member of the American Academy of Anti Aging Medicine, in fact, for years. And because of her, we both attended a couple of conferences in Chicago and Orlando I got to see firsthand. Also, I was a previous pharmaceutical sales rep. So I've seen both hands of of how people are treating their bodies in today's world. One being preventative and one being sort of reactive. And I've seen and witnessed the success rates of being more preventative in nature. Quality of life, of course, is more important than longevity sometimes, but it's really a gamut of just life's experiences that brought me to developing a product and getting more involved personally.
So tell us how you came to develop the product and really what it does.
The product Youth Infusion really came out of personal need.
Having gone to University of Florida, I was a food and resource economics major. I took a lot of courses and went through a lot of classes with food science and read a lot of different magazines and became certified in the National Academy of Sports medicine in early 2000.
I'd walk into vitamin stores, various vitamin stores, and one would think that, well, because you're walking into a vitamin store, everything in here must be healthy. Unfortunately, especially when it comes to sports nutrition, products contain artificial ingredients, artificial coloring, sweeteners. Everything is just sort of an artificial world, if you will because of that, I started to come across a product that would include ingredients like vitamin D and zinc and vitamin E and the whole gamut of, of natural anti aging nutrients that are packaged in a natural base.
Isn't it amazing that the way our labeling is and the way advertising, like you said, people walk into a vitamin store and they assume everything is healthy, yet there's all sorts of artificial ingredients and chemicals?
It's just unbelievable, huh?
Well, it really is. And it's frustrating too, even on the food level. If you walk into a, an organic food store, one of the larger so called natural food chains that we all know of.
We know the names, we know the names for sure.
I try not to mention them, but unfortunately it comes down to the dollar. They're really focusing on getting as much money as possible for a food item. Unfortunately, because of that, they're using ingredients like canola oil, soybean oil. These oils are really unnatural. Canola oil, if you read the story behind that, it's essentially created as a lubricant. It's not really a natural oil that occurs in nature. So the genetically modified products, that's another concern. All of them have dire consequences in our future as far as quality and longevity.
Well, you mentioned the GMO thing and that's certainly a hot topic. The genetically modified organisms. I kind of think the jury's out on that, isn't it?
Well, unfortunately. Well, I guess fortunately, let's say that it has received a lot of visibility in the media and that's a good thing because consumers are becoming a little bit more aware. Unfortunately, it's an educated consumer that is aware. Most stores, if you go under the natural or not natural, but the commercial stores are the everyday breakfast cereals and anything that's got corn or soy is typically a genetically modified food. So it's one's responsibility to educate themselves and to look further. And due to supply and demand, hopefully as demand for natural products takes hold, then evidently the GMO will hopefully decrease in time.
Yeah, no question about it. So certainly people have the right to know what's in their food. I've done several shows on that. It's just scary that people don't have the right to know. And there's a big question mark out there about it. I'm not saying it's good, we just don't know. I mean, it's going to take probably decades to figure out what this means to us in terms of gmo, right?
Well, that's for sure. You go into any typical restaurant and order a salad and vegetables and a sauce or whatever it may be. And you really don't know because anything that's a chain or commercialized, obviously they're reporting to stockholders. It's in their best interest, of course, to turn a profit. Unfortunately, on that end, you don't really get to read the packaging of all the ingredients that they purchase. I was in a restaurant the other day and I asked them to steam my vegetables with real butter. Well, I actually asked specifically, do you have butter on the premises? And they actually didn't. It was a margarine product. It was a canola soy margarine. It's a shame. The waitstaff, the people that work there, they might identify it by looks as butter, but it really isn't. It's persistence on our behalf that's important.
Right, right. And I've always wondered if you're ever getting the truth. If you ask if the salmon is farm raised.
They can say any. Yeah, yeah. Well, tell us about some of the essential vitamins and minerals necessary for all of us to feel young and healthy and energetic.
Dr. Well, you definitely want to have your B vitamins. Those are stress vitamins. They're water soluble. And other times of stress, which we all are, the body tends to excrete those in predominant amounts. Certainly vitamin D, that's a catch all supplement right now everyone hears in the news you have to get your vitamin D. And unfortunately people seem to be a little bit afraid of the sun these days.
Everyone is taking shelter. They put SPF products on their skin.
Personally, I think it's sort of a myth that the sun causes cancer. I think it can accelerate skin damage and I think it can accelerate existing condition. But the sun is very good for us. It does supply a lot of things that we really don't even know about yet. Then of course you've got vitamin E, vitamin C. Vitamin C is a wonderful nutrient. Of course, the RDI is only 60 milligrams and unfortunately, unfortunately, the RDI is what was set up to create. It's the minimum level essentially that prevents someone from getting scurvy. You look at all these nutrients and the rdi, you can't really go by because they are the absolute minimum that it takes to prevent something. Certainly our goal here is to optimize.
Explain that a little bit more in terms of the optimization, if you would.
Sure. Well, vitamin C, for example.
60Mg RDI, that's negligible, 500mg is probably about the key amount that individuals should take in in a dietary Supplement that also has been shown to boost the immune system. Anything more. Of course, vitamin C, being acidic, can have a little bit of a gastric upset if someone were to take several grams of it, for example, at one time. And B vitamins, anything that is water soluble, that's your vitamin B, vitamin C, you really don't have to worry about too much of taking an overdose because if one drinks plenty of water, those will be excreted by the body when they're not needed. Fat soluble vitamins, Vitamins A, vitamins D, E and K. Of course they are fat soluble, so it's best to take them with a healthy fat source. With that being said, it's also hard to overdose. But if one were to go crazy and take, say, 100,000 international units of vitamin D, perhaps there could be a minor side effect.
Is there a certain sort of amount of sun? I mean, do you believe people should wear sunscreen? Do you believe they should get more than 15 minutes in a day?
You know, certainly it depends on where one lives in relation to the equator. Certainly in Florida, the sun is a lot more intense and certainly it can cause skin damage in a shorter period of time. I think 15 to 20 minutes is probably ideal because the sun is good. It doesn't necessarily mean you want to go out and lay on the beach all day long without sunscreen. But I think the key here is to avoid the sun with umbrellas and light clothing as opposed to.
Clogging the pores with SPF lotions that are also found to have chemicals in them.
Yeah, I know that's a tough one.
It's definitely something that you want to ask your physic about, especially your natural practitioner about Coconut oil, actually, for example, is very, very good for the skin and actually has been shown to have a natural SPF content to it.
But, like, will it compare to the chemical stuff?
Well, unfortunately, it's not going to Compare to an SPF 15 or higher.
That's the thing. Okay, so I want to ask you this, you know, from a skeptic side of things. How does one know what supplement to use? You know, at the beginning of our talk today, you talked about the artificial ingredients, the colorings, you know, this kind of stuff. But there's so much of this out there. I mean, it's, it's an unbelievably crowded marketplace. I'd love to, you know, talk to you a little bit, time permitting, about your life as an entrepreneur. I mean, how do you make a dent in a marketplace like this? It's just There, there's a zillion products.
You know, it really is difficult and one has to definitely create a niche and distinguish themselves from the others. You know, my niche is that Euth infusion is an effervescent vitamin. Of course, effervescent vitamins mean that they don't have any binders. They're meant to be mixed with juice or water and taken immediately and absorbed much more quickly. Most vitamin pills, for example, they have binders that hold the tablets, for example, together that are hard to digest. They can create abdominal or stomach discomfort. So it was my objective to get away from a lot of the pills. Of course, 70% of the population can't or does not like to swallow pills anyway. So it's creating the niche of the delivery system. And of course, we all know that everyone's dehydrated and an effervescent vitamin encourages one to drink fluid because they actually taste good.
Yeah, that's true. That's a very interesting point. So when you hear that vitamins are pharmaceutical grade, that's not like organic, where if you say something's organic, it better really be organic because there's real teeth to that law. Okay, but you hear about vitamins and products being pharmaceutical grade, which so far as I know, there's no real teeth to that at all.
Not necessarily. The dietary supplement industry sort of regulates itself.
There was a law passed in the 1990s and essentially what they have is CGMPs. So they're certified good manufacturing practices. And most of the labs of pharmaceutical companies.
Actually produce vitamin products or vitamin products are overlooked by the fda. So the FDA has a right to come in and certify and approve these facilities. So a lot of times when they use pharmaceutical grade, it's basically somewhat of an FDA approved condition and also ingredient.
What does it mean though? I mean, I don't even know what that means.
When someone says that it's basically based comes down to purity, it's not going to be contaminated by something else. And a lot of caught with athletes being caught failing drug tests, for example, because their vitamin supplement was contaminated with something else that that facility was manufacturing.
Yeah, very interesting. Okay, all right, good. So anything else you want people to know or mention about energy, about general health and longevity?
Well, when it comes to energy, I think most people turn to caffeine and stimulants. And I think it's very important as far as from the longevity standpoint to try to minimize your daily caffeine, maybe to just a cup of coffee whenever you're taking on the hourly energy drinks and some of the more carbonated energy drinks of the world. It's a stressor to the body. They stress the adrenal glands. And it's kind of a. I guess the best analogy would be you're accelerating in your car and you're always pedal to the floorboard. Unfortunately, if you do that every day, something's got to go, and it's best to derive your energy from healthy foods and B vitamins.
Well, I agree with you that this energy drink culture has got to be a very dangerous thing. I mean, are we seeing adrenal fatigue? That's a real thing, right?
It really is a real thing, for sure. It's not necessarily recognized in the mainstream medical world because.
They basically recognize adrenal failure. But unfortunately, we have to have a state in which one is in that's on the way to failure. And by consuming constant energy drinks and being up at night under artificial lighting, there are a lot of things that are stressing the bodies, unfortunately, in ways that we were never really designed to do.
How do you know if you have adrenal fatigue and can you do anything about it? I mean, are you just tired all the time? Like, you know, the stimulants just stop working after a while, right? They just start reducing and reducing. Imagine these kids in the generation Y kids, they've just been destroying their body. I mean, they grew up on energy drinks.
Well, that's right. And unfortunately, one of the side effects, of course, tremors, high blood pressure, cardiovascular events.
A good symptom. If you're sitting down in a chair, for example, and you stand up real quick, you get that lightheaded feeling. That's the adrenals. The blood pressure is a lot lower when standing than when sitting. And. And there's an imbalance of nutrients such as salt, magnesium, potassium. Those are all factors to point towards adrenal fatigue. And of course, kids, of course, today's world, it's add. And needless to say, that's probably because they have too much caffeine going through their systems.
Oh, but, you know, we just got to give them some Ritalin and Adderall and I mean, God, that whole industry, that's another discussion. But. But, wow, they are, you know, the legal drug industry is pretty dangerous.
And I was a pharmaceutical rep, so I know how it works. You know, that's the goal, of course, is to treat the symptoms. And unfortunately, that doesn't necessarily work and never the cause.
Right. That's the difference. The symptom versus the cause. The cause is what's important, right?
Exactly.
Yeah, absolutely. Very good point. Well, Budge, give out your website. Tell people where they can learn more.
The website is www.drinkyouthinfusion.com, and right there you can read a little bit more about Youth Infusion. And certainly if you send in your contact information, we'll gladly send out a sample.
Fantastic. Budge Collison, thank you so much for joining us.
I appreciate it, Jason. Thank you.
