LS 96 - Beating Aging and Diabesity with Supplements, Fats, and Vitamins with The First Lady of Nutrition, Ann Louise Gittleman
1 Feb 2017 · 32 min
In this Longevity & Biohacking podcast episode, host Fernando Aris (filling in for Jason Hartman) interviews nutrition authority Ann Louise Gittleman. Gittleman outlines her view of the "diabesity" epidemic—excess weight combined with insulin‑resistant type‑2 diabetes—tracing its roots to over‑consumption of refined sugars, fructose, and industrially processed fats. She champions "smart" or essential fats (saturated, nut‑seed oils) as the primary fuel for brain and body, warns against trans‑fats, hydrogenated oils, and GMO seed‑derived oils, and stresses the often‑overlooked role of bile quality and gallbladder function in fat digestion and detoxification. The conversation moves to sugar and grain avoidance, hidden sugars in processed foods, and the need for vigilant label reading. Gittleman then promotes two flagship supplements: Asea, a redox‑signaling product that purportedly boosts endogenous glutathione production up to 300 %, and Ultra H3 (procaine‑hydrochloride), which she claims repairs cell membranes, supports nerve health, and reverses signs of aging. She addresses concerns about supplement dependence, discusses modern environmental toxins (including electropollution) that deplete glutathione, and notes the potential for supplements to influence gene expression, especially for individuals with MTHFR variants. The episode concludes with practical advice, URLs for her website and social media, and links to purchase Asea and Ultra H3.

Basically, she's one of the world's foremost experts in functional and integrative medicine with a Master's in nutrition from Columbia university and a PhD in holistic nutrition, Clayton College of Natural Health. Welcome Annelise, how are you today?
Oh, I'm fine, Fernando. Thank you so much for your lovely introduction.
You're welcome. Please give us a sense of geography by telling us where you're located today.
Well, I'm coming to you from the great state of Idaho. I'm in the Pacific Northwest in the northern part. Coeur d', Alene, Idaho, to be exact.
Excellent. Now your bio is just phenomenal. You've written over 30 books. Is there any area in nutrition you have not covered?
Well, when you get to be this age and stage of life, Fernando, you've seen it, done it and have experienced so many individuals who have had life changing stories about supplements, about diets, about the right kind of nutrition. So I've been very privileged because over my career I'VE had the opportunity to study with not only some of the finest leaders in alternative and integrative medicine, but I really stood at the feet, so to speak, of one of the greatest that most people don't know about. And that was my original mentor, Dr. Hazel Parcells. She was the one that influenced me the most because on her 106th birthday, she said that there is only the understanding of nature and the everyday practice of nature's laws that were the secret of her longevity. And so I've really attempted to devote all of my books to all of the things that we need to do to be healthy and to assure quality longevity, not just to elongate the period of dying. That's diet, that's detox, that's thinking the right thoughts, that's being spiritual in your own way. And it's also the ability to sleep, to release your tension, and to be very calm in the face of pressures that we all meet in this day and time.
Well, that's amazing to live to 106 years old. We always remind our audience here that it's not only about having a long lifespan. You need to have a longer health span as well. And, you know, with the right nutrition and the right lifestyle, you're able to do that. And I'm really excited to have you here. In reading your work, I like your use of the word diabesity to describe the epidemic affecting probably half of the American population. I heard the same word diabesity being used by Dr. Hyman in a TED talk. Dr. Hyman is the director of the Cleveland Clinic and a very well known functional medicine physician. And I'd like to ask you, what does this mean? What is this epidemic and what is the type of causes for so much of this happening in the country?
Well, you know, it's interesting you bring that up because the term was originally coined by Dr. Robert Atkins, who is my personal friend. And this was way back in the 1990s. So God bless his memory, because he was the one that really taught us that we had the whole nutrition paradigm upside down. And what was important were smart fats, what we now call smart fats. The importance of fats as the primary nutrient that fueled the brain and fueled your body. And then we needed the right kind of vegetables, moderate amounts of fruits, moderate amounts of starches, complex carbohydrates, and that what we didn't need were anything artificial or anything that was very high sugar. So what we learned from Dr. Atkins was that insulin was a fat promoting hormone that was triggered by the consumption of too many carbohydrates. And now what we know in this day and time is that too much sugar in the wrong form, the processed, the refined form, even too much fructose in the natural form, is a real trigger to this diabesity, which is a combination of type 2 diabesity and being overweight, with high blood pressure, with problems in terms of high triglycerides, as well as an expanding waistline. So I think that all of that can be circumvented if we get back to the basics, which is putting the right kind of fats, what I like to call essential and smart fats, back on the dinner table. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. And even between meals, fat is where it's at. That's all I can tell you.
Fernando, I agree 100%. We're completely aligned on this. Eating the right fats will make a huge difference. In my own personal story, making a switch three years ago to a diet that mimics the paleo diet, but it has less inflammation and moderate amounts of protein, has made a huge difference for me personally and for my entire family. And it's very interesting you mentioned Dr. Robert Atkinson. You know, he really had it right, didn't he? You know, he started that Atkins diet revolution. And from my learnings he seemed to have pushed establishment really hard way in the beginning. And I know he butted heads with establishment, but I think he was critical in this decades long push for low fat diets which have contributed significantly to the epidemic, don't you think?
Oh, absolutely. And I know directly because I was his personal friend, personal associates did many of his television and his radio shows actually at wor in the great state of New York in New York City for so many years. And what I can tell you is that he was a pioneer, not just in diet, but also in detox. He wanted to be known as a holistic or integrative doctor first and foremost. And not only did he butt heads, but what we're finding today is that all of the latest research are really confirming what he taught us so many years ago. And that it was the hormonal impact of foods that was critical. Not calories per se, but the insulin, the glucagon ratio, and how important it was to have the right kind of fats in your system, whether they were saturated fats, whether they were the essential fats from nuts and seeds. But what was not helpful were the trans fats or the hydrogenated fats which are so prevalent still in our food supply this day.
Yeah, unfortunately that's still so prevalent. You see so many commercials for, you know, french fries and all kinds of fried foods that are obviously the worst types of fats as they are cooking away and getting oxidized and literally creating toxins as you watch those french fries being cooked. It's just sad to see how strongly it still gets pushed on tv.
It's very sad. And then you see if the trans fats are taken out of the margarines, then we still have some of those polyunsaturated fats that are completely altered and adulterated. You've got the GMO aspect, which has now come into play, that wasn't part of the Dr. Atkins scene so many years ago. But you can't be eating canola, sunflower, soy, and corn, because so many of those oils are genetically modified. And so it really behooves all of us to take a look at a diet similar to what I wrote about in 1988, which was my first book, beyond Pritikin, which talked about putting the right fats back into your diet. And then I wrote a book in 2002 called the Fat Flush Plan, which introduced fats as a primary aspect of not only losing weight, but getting healthy and assisting your skin, your hair, your nails, as well as your hormones. So fats not only are where it's at when it comes to your waistline, but they promote a type of tissue like prostaglandin, a tissue like hormone, which is so important for allergies, is so important in terms of inflammation. Very good for the joints, the hair, the brain, because your brain is 60% fat. So I think it's the right kind of fats that we have to focus on and the ability, Fernando, to digest them, because there are many individuals that are eating the right kind of fats, but without gallbladder activity, because so many of us don't have a gallbladder, they're not able to digest these and get all the benefits that the healthy fats accrue.
That makes me believe, and I think that this was also the case in my personal story, that having a detox in the beginning of the change of diets to having more healthy fats is crucial. Meaning you need to reorganize and replenish your gut biome in your body to be able to digest these fats properly. Does that make sense?
Yes. And right along with that is what you need to do, is you need to clean out your liver, and more importantly, you need to be able to make sure that you have the proper kind of bile that is Free flowing and high quality because it's the bile that is the real key in terms of metabolizing fat and detoxifying poisons. So that if your bile is congested with all kinds of drugs, with the metabolites of processed foods, if you have soluble toxins, oil soluble toxins in the bile, or too much virus or bacteria or parasites, the bile will not be functioning properly. And then you can't take some of these toxins out of your system, nor can you break down fats into the small particles. So even more important than the microbiome, or perhaps just as important I should state, is the quality of your bile, which nobody is talking about. It's something that our nutritional pioneers in the early 20th centuries wrote about, but nobody's talking about in this day and time. It's something that I write about in the new Fat Flush plan because I find that there are many people that are embracing a high fat diet, whether that's primal Paleo, Price, you know, there are a lot of different variations on the Atkins theme these days, but if they don't have quality bile, then they're missing out on the fat soluble vitamins, the vitamins A, E, D and K. And they're not able to break down fats into small particles, nor do they have a successful method of detoxification because the bile is the liver's secondary method of detox, which again, very few people, I should say, are totally aware of in this day and time.
Yes. And I think to make matters worse, a lot of the exercise routines that are promoted without a healthy diet probably make the problem worse because our fats is where the toxins are stored. And if people are attempting to just reduce the appearance without changing the underlying system, a yo yo type situation. And they'll recur without seeing permanent results.
Yes, which is why it's so important, I feel, to have nutrients that also can help your body assist in the promotion of healthy bile and digestion. And that is where your apple cider vinegar comes in play to thin the bile. That's where a certain amount of beets comes into play. And even lecithin, non GMO soy lecithin, which can thin the bile and help tremendously. And all of these can also help in the production of gallstones, which has become so prevalent in this day and age since the wrong kind of fats are still so predominant, I would say, in the American diet. So it's not just let's eat fat and let's lose weight or eat fat, lose weight, eat fat gets thin, it's we need to digest those fats with a proper bile. And that's why I keep mentioning this, because it's something that is totally unsuspected, totally ignored and totally underrated.
Now what about sugars and grains? Are sugars and grains real food? What's your take there?
I'm not in favor. You're talking to the daughter of a type 2 diabetic, which got me interested in this many, many years ago. The problem is that if you were only eating whole fruits on a daily basis without excess sugar, because you only need about 2 teaspoons of sugar per day, period, and you can get that easily with just the right kind of vegetables, we'd be fine. But I see a lot of people that are not only food insensitive or food intolerant of so many grains, but a lot of those grains have also been hybrid. I mean we find that hybridized. You see a lot of issues with gluten in this day and time. You see so many of the pesticides, the herbicides that are used on the grains that are making people toxic, even the mycotoxins toxins. So I like a grain free personally as much as possible, a grain free and a sugar free diet where you're using a lot of colorful carbohydrates, whether that is sweet potatoes, yams and squash rather than the grains and the sugar. And I'm also a big proponent, Fernando, in lessening the amount of fruit because I find most individuals have gotten very fructose intolerant. So if you're eating a great deal of mango, papaya, bananas, pineapple on a daily basis, you may be overdoing your intake of too much of a good thing. So fructose is a big deal, particularly if you've got a fatty liver syndrome or you've got high uric acid. Look at the fructose. And it's also one of the underlying causes of diabesity epidemic that we spoke of earlier. So sugar, there's a bittersweet truth about sugar. A little goes a long way. And too much of a good thing is simply too much of a good thing thing.
Couldn't agree more. Fructose gets converted to glucose, or if you have too much of it, triglycerides, which is there's a direct correlation to heart disease. And what is even more troublesome is you see the entire fruit juice industry. I was actually in a conference over the weekend and we were talking in a roundtable and somebody had a Snapple juice drink. I forgot if it was an apple or Lemonade, Snapple. And we looked at the nutrition content in the label and it had 46 grams of sugar for just a small bottle of Snapple.
Unbelievable.
As you mentioned, two teaspoons. So I think about one tablespoon is probably about four to five grams or so. So, you know, in this case they are drinking 46 grams that the body gets completely overwhelmed. And unfortunately, a lot of the parents, you know, I can be included in that list as of a few years ago, think that giving juices to young kids or to anybody is a healthy lifestyle. And it couldn't be farther from the truth.
It's so true. And especially all that apple juice. You know, I get so concerned because there is a lot of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides that is used on apples. And parents seem to think if it's natural, then it's good. And then we of course have the high amount of fructose which is hidden in apples and applesauce, as well as balsamic vinegar, might I add.
Yes, it's amazing how it's. You're probably familiar with JJ Virgin and her crusade against sugar and how it's amazing to me where you can find sugar. It's hidden in so many of the most common foods that we eat. Like you, you said balsamic vinegar. Normally you wouldn't think that that would have sugar in it, but it does.
Yes, indeed. And in 1996, I wrote a book called get the Sugar Out. So I did a complete evaluation of the American diet, and it was frightening to understand that sugar is hiding everywhere, in toothpaste, in all kinds of things that you would never, ever imagine. So you've got to become an inveterate label reader, a food sleuth, a food detective, because it's hidden everywhere, which is why when people start counting their carbohydrate grams, you kind of target it much lower than what they need because you're getting this extra sugar, extra grains in the diet that is completely hidden.
It's just amazing. There's this new learning that has come about that has always been there, but somehow it got covered up by several different interest groups. Let's switch gears a bit to supplements. And I'd like to talk to you about a product that I'm actually familiar with and so far have been thoroughly impressed with, and it's called Asea, a redox signaling supplement. Now, you have said yourself that this product is a game changing discovery, is the game changing discovery of the century. The greatest advance in lifestyle medicine as it harnesses the power of your own body to keep you well. Now, these are very powerful words. What exactly is this product? Please explain this.
Well, it is really a game changer because it is the only redox signaling supplement that I know of that's on the market that can actually control all of your bodily functions on a cellular level. And it also has the ability to really change your genetic expression, so it talks to your gna. I feel that asea, because of my personal experience with using the product, using their skin care. Renew 28 is the product that is leading the revolution of lifestyle medicine because it also has the ability to serve as the precursor to glutathione, which is the body's most important antioxidant. And so in that respect, it can regenerate, rejuvenate and reinvent your body, as well as protect your DNA. I can't say enough good things about the product because it helped me personally, it's helped clients that I know of, and it's so terrific that they now have this topical that you can use that is doing wonderful things for many people's skin.
Now let's talk about the antioxidant changes. I've actually taken the product now. I started about two and a half, three weeks ago. And what I did prior to taking the product is go through a complete set of tests, blood tests. One of them was specifically to measure my level of glutathione, which is for our audience's benefit, is the master, or it's called the master antioxidant that our body produces. And it's very effective against eliminating free radicals in the body. And many autoimmune diseases and disorders of the body are caused or are signaled by the reduced amount of glutathione in the body. There's a direct correlation between the two. And, you know, how does it do this? I mean, does it work similar to a supplement, like a vitamin, or does it work differently? What is the mechanism behind it?
Well, it's an interesting mechanism because in order to make glutathione in your body, you usually need a precursor, whether that's from some of the amino acids that you get in whey protein, nac and acetylcysteine. And in this particular substance, with this particular mechanism, your body is prompted to make its glutathione all by itself. So it enables your body to make what it genetically should be making, but perhaps cannot because of certain kind of genetic variations or mutations. So that's why I love it. It goes directly to your cells. The cellular level of Health and enables your body to make glutathione to the tune of something like 300% of what it normally should be making, or 300% will increase. So I feel that it's a game changer in that respect. And I can really wrap my mind around that because I've written so much about diet and detox and knowing that glutathione is a toxic waste eliminator, you can't possibly, Fernando, on a daily basis protect yourself from the onslaught of heavy metals, of virus, of bacteria, of the metabolism of drugs or hormones, or even electropollution. You need the help of glutathione. So being able to take this and knowing that there's no toxic residue, it enables your body to do what it natively should, but perhaps has become exhausted and cannot to me is a major claim to fame. So I'm a big fan, I'm an ambassador for Asea and I'm proud to say that.
Do you have a concern, you know, sometimes with supplements and maybe with Asea, you know, our body, as we age, naturally reduces the production of glutathione along with other hormones. Are you concerned with, by taking the supplement that you would accelerate this normal reduction in the body in that you will make your body lazier in some ways? You know what I mean? Do you have a concern?
Are you sure that you'd make your body dependent? No, because the glutathione is being eaten up faster than you can regenerate it. There is such an onslaught. If you consider that there are over, what is it now, 100,000 different chemicals in the environment. You can't possibly detoxify all of them. And if everybody took a glutathione test, you'd see all of us are woefully deficient. So we're living in a day and age where we live in a toxic soup, so to speak. So I think more than ever you need assistance. I might be concerned with certain other digestive enzymes, but not with a product like this. It's a fundamental basic product that we all need on a daily basis.
I know exactly what you mean. The argument against supplements is flawed in a sense that if you were to compare our lifestyle and the amount of toxins, man made toxins that we are exposed to now, compared to whatever fifty, one hundred, a thousand, a million years ago is vastly different. And if there is no supplementation with the right supplements, and I'm a big believer in measurement, I mean, you have to quantize the amount of supplements and the kinds of supplements that are needed. But it's especially important to fight against these new toxins. If you just eat foods, there's an assumption that the environment around you hasn't changed and the foods somehow have changed over time to protect you against these toxins. Which is not true.
No, none of it's true. And here's the reality. The reality is that we're looking at the toxins that we can see, that we can measure. How can you measure the electropollution that's coming on a daily basis from your cell phone, from the new 5G that they're trying to ram through this country, through the electro pollution that's coming from the wires that are on top of the house, that are on top of your church, that are on top of your school, or even your cell phones that are in your house, your mobile phones in your house, your smart meters, I mean, you name it, and it's emitting electropollution, which also fatigues the body and can eat up glutathione. So I mean, we're involved on a daily basis. This is a fight for survival.
Yeah, couldn't agree more. When you talk about the epigenetic nature of asea, is it true that we can significantly affect our gene expression via supplementation? How do you see that working?
Well, I know that you can affect genetic expression through supplementation, through lifestyle changes, through the use of powerful thinking, through your thoughts, your belief system. There are many different mechanisms that really are at work here. But I think what's important to understand with this particular supplement is because glutathione, in my view, is so vitally important that many of us in this day and time have a MTHFR variant, which means that we cannot break down toxins appropriately. So it behooves us, all of us, to use something on a daily basis that allows us to do so. And you certainly can't take enough methylated folic acid or methylated folate or methylated B12 to really accommodate what your body needs to do on a second by second basis. So I'm all for a supplement like this one that enables your body to do what it should be doing natively, but is still too tired and too overworked to assume. You know, I need to let you know that years ago one of my cohorts said in this day and time, you need three livers to detoxify all of the metabolic waste that are out there. And I think that is so true.
I couldn't agree more. And I must also say that it's just a beautiful time to be alive. It's affordable to know more about our gene sequence and what mutations do we have. I recently had my partial gene sequence done with a company called 23andMe. And you know, they list through that company and other associates of them, they list any mutations. You know, you mentioned math, frr and you know, if you do have a mutation and you're not able to to your systems in your body are not able to process foods and the nutrition that it needs, it will have a significant impact. And by knowing what these mutations are, you can do something about it. You know, you can take supplements or you can change your lifestyle and change the way that your body works, essentially. I think it's so important to do that. What other supplements do you recommend? I mean, you did mention the woman you worked with that was 106 years old, is that correct?
When she passed away with all of her faculty, she was 106. May she rest in peace. Yes, and she left quite a legacy that I've written about. I've written 30 books based upon many of her fundamental teachings. She was the first one that brought to my attention the importance of the right kind of fats. Before anybody, even Dr. Atkins was talking about the importance of fats and insulin regulation in terms of the diet. But one of the other supplements that I also learned about along the way was a supplement called Ultra H3, which was a procaine hydrochloride based supplement which was very important in terms of the vitality of the nerve and the brain synapses. So we have found that this particular supplement, which again is called Ultra H3, has the ability to really repair damaged cell membranes and also help to lower certain types of enzymatic productions in the brain that lead to either aging or depression. So it's been a real bonus in terms of turning back the clock. We kind of call it the Romanian based anti aging miracle, which was discovered in 1949 by a cardiologist who did some research at the Natural, I guess it was the National Geriatric Institute, it was in Romania. And she started using procaine for its anesthetic properties with her elderly arthritis patients. And she found not only did these arthritis patients become arthritis free and pain free, but they exhibited these dramatic mental and physical improvements and then also reported, you know, an enhanced sex drive. So this particular supplement, which was known as Durovitol, was very big in the 50s and 60s and then somehow or another we weren't able to travel to Romania to get it. And a biochemist here who has since passed away created the ingestible version of the Procaine and it's called the Ultra H3, which is now available on my site and has become almost a flagship product for all of my clients and followers that want to really get the cutting edge strategies. I'd say for optimum health and longevity, it's been a boon for returning your hair to its original color, for getting rid of age spots, for getting rid of arthritis, for relieving depression, mental, spiritual and emotional health. It kind of gives you that joie de vie. Once again, people feel decades younger and even look younger with the use of Ultra H3. It's been a miracle for the past 25 years.
And you mentioned Ultra H3 and how do you spell Giravitol?
Girovitol G E R O V I.
T A L okay, great. We are coming up on the end of the show and would like to know more about you. Where can people find out more about these products and also follow your work? Please give out any URLs, links, social media, whatever you think can be helpful.
For the listeners I would suggest the annlowise.com a n n l o u I s e annlouise.com I have a Facebook page which is anne Louise Gittleman, Ph.D. cNS and I would really encourage many of your listeners to sign up for our blog which you can find@thesandlouise.com I also do a lot of work with many of the national magazines including first for Women and Women's World that are on your newsstand almost every week.
Excellent. And for asea the URL is terrahealing and that's T E R R A healing. All one word. Teamasea.com so again terrahealing.teamaseya.com and there you can buy the product, you can try it. And I know that for Asea the recommendation is to try it for at least a month. Probably be better to try it for a few months. I think most people that try it see results after three months. I think half of the people see results within a month. And if you are a business or is interested in becoming a distributor, there's also links in the website for this. Anything else Ann Louise, that you want to bring up before we wrap up?
Well, I think that there are many practical, real world proven ways to maintain long, healthful and a productive life and I think that what's most important is that you get your fat straight. Fats are where it's at as we've discussed that you're able to digest those fats with the right kind of bile, and that if you need supplements to really enhance your own body's ability to make some of these leading edge antioxidants, then we have to think of glutathione and whatever will produce glutathione naturally. Asea in this case, as we've discussed, as well as the Ultra H3 which can repair the damaged cell membranes.
Excellent. Well, thank you very much, Anne Louise. You have a great day and you.
