1994 || Vedic Wedding #JayapatakaSwamiArchives

This transcript records a spoken discourse (likely by Jaya Pataka Swami or a temple speaker) on the power of devotional service (bhakti) to dissolve material miseries, illustrated with anecdotes (Prabhupada in a fly-infested village) and scriptural pastimes (Krishna tied to a mortar; Kuvera's sons liberated). The speaker discusses practical devotional themes: dovetailing material activities into service, guru and shastra authority, limits of permitted action, and purification through chanting/hearing. The recording then shifts into a live Vedic wedding ceremony, giving mantras, ritual items (tulsi, kumkuma, prasadam), and procedural instructions including the seven circumambulations (saptapadi).
That's the beauty of devotional service. You don't have to do anything else. In fact, if you do anything else, you won't write. But then you get right, vanquish Asu without delay. So here there's people. There are people who are doing devotional service. They're readying their daily sadhana bhakti. And they have achieved transcendental bliss. Still, they are achieving miseries. It's saying here, samasta dukkha, all the miseries. Even one who the level of devotional service, who already gets a taste for devotional service, gets bliss when he hears the pastime. They may also, living in this material world, encounter dukkha miseries. What do they do? They absorb their mind in the pastimes of the Lord. And samasta dukkha of Daya. And this way, all their mysteries are man. So this is a transcendental way of solving miseries, solving anxieties. You become so advanced in Ka consciousness whenever there's difficulties. Because just like you're living in a material world, there's always some problem. Prabhupada gave an example when one time he was in this one village in India. And he thought that the village had an asphalt road because the whole road was black. And he went in a horse and buggy. Like in North India. They have these dhungas. They go to Mathura. They have this, like ponies pulling this little cart. So he was in one of these horse and buggy things. It's nothing really formal. They have formal horse and baggies too in Calcutta, a few places. But in the village, it's very simple. Almost like a bullock cart with the horse a little more. The wheels are a little more lubricated or ball bearings or something. It's a little faster than a bullock cart. Rustic kind of thing. So Prophet was getting on this cart or pony cart. And then as they were going along, they saw it wasn't an asphalt road. It was a dirt road. And all the black on the road was flies. And there were so many flies that as they're going, the flies all flew up in a cloud going through like a cloud of flies. And then when they go. And then the dust would settle and zoom, they go back on the road. The city is like they saw, like, here's the one place. And it's like fly local. Just everywhere it's flies, you know? And it's like. I remember in Mayapur, before we had any buildings. We were just living in a grass hut. And there all day long we try to Read the Shastra, they see, they're reading, these flies would come and they just like, they were like aggressive, you know. So then, you know, when the sun goes down, there flies. But then the sun goes down, I become a mosquito. So it's like from one thing to the next. Some people were going to Prabhupada, you know, what to do is for flies and mosquitoes. And then Prabhupada gave the story of look at one place they got more flies somewhere else, they got more mosquitoes. Somewhere else you go, they got snakes, you go somewhere else, they got crazy guys that shoot you whatever you do in the summer. There's, you know, there's some problem everywhere. So the best thing is that where, you know, somehow or another tolerate, there's some devotional service if there's some reason to be where you are and you kind of tolerate knowing that the difficulties that come, knowing that there's problems everywhere. Somewhere it's too cold, somewhere it's too hot, somewhere it's too smoggy, somewhere it's too foggy, there's always some kind of problem. Everybody go to Hawaii. There's the place like heaven on earth. Some devotee I went to see, one devotee was staying in the 23rd floor of this one building in Hawaii, some big multi story hotel or apartment building. Sometimes people come to Hawaii for this vacation. They save up for years and years together. Then finally when they get there, it's the tropical island. So sometimes it rains for. So they go there on their one week vacation. Every day it's raining, no sun. It's raining and raining. And after like by the time, you know, they get so frustrated, they just jump from the 20th story of their hotel building. They can't take it. They waited for two years to have the sunny vacation. When they got there, it was nothing but rain. It was like too much. What's the use of living? So now, because Kali Yuga is exclusive and go to these paradise places and you get, you know, drunk, drunken, you know, islanders or something and they, you know, Robbie or whatever. Even if it was closest, you know, some place might be close to heaven, but still it's nothing. All of a sudden problem can come up and it's getting worse. It's going to get worse before it gets better. Akbar always said that before the world gets better, it may have to get worse so that people get really totally disgusted and then they come to personal conscience. Whether it's already bottomed out or not, I don't know. Definitely it's gotten worse. Since Prabhupada was here even in one sense, materially, all the varied race riots and life. But it can get worse. Materially speaking, they're the devotees different. We really remain fixed in this principle of hearing the pastimes of Ka. Serving Ka. We tell people how wonderful Krishna is. Look at how wonderful Krishna is. And people, when they hear about the glories of Ka, then they get some relief from these miseries. Especially if they're a little purified to be able to. To appreciate, to get some bliss. If they chant, if they take Prasada, then they get purified enough that when they hear the glorious of Krishna they feel spiritual ecstasy. They're singing every morning. Krishna is playing with his parents in that way. How Actually all these pastimes are just to increase the bliss of the residents of Vilni. The two sons of Kuvera were cursed to stand there as trees. Because they have been committing illicit sex. And they were disrespectful to Narada Muni. They had to take the karma. Not more than the karma. That was very offensive. So they got cursed to become trees. But then they begged for some dispensation. So then Narada Muni said alright, you can be trees and now bring Dawad and when Krishna comes, he'll deliver you. So this curse was a blessing in disguise. They could trees. They're able to see all the pastimes of Ka was especially naughty one day and mischievous. His mother had to cook the milk and other things. So she just wanted to keep him out of trouble. So she tied him to one stone mortar. In North India. You see these mortars, they're grinding dull. Although there's like heavy two stones. There's different kinds of. I don't know if that was the ones he had tied to or one for another. There's two or three kinds of mortars. But one kind. You put the doll in a hole and the little dolls, because they're round, you can spin it around. The stone is wherever. You couldn't lift the stone, it's so heavy. But you can spin it because it's like. Like ball bearings. All the dolls. The heavy stone rolls over the dolls, the grain, the unbroken doll. Then it breaks it takes off the skin and breaks it. And they keep putting more and more and the half just less than. So this way it's like it's automatic doll maker. Just with two stones. And there's a few other kind. That's for breaking rice, this for all kinds of mortars. So this is some kind of mortar. He was tied to which is very heavy. They're very heavy. They're not liftable by even, you know, many men, many grown men can lift it. Krishna pulls, crawls with pulling the mortar in the ground and then pulls over these two trees. Two sons of Kuvera come out and circumambulate Krishna. And they pray to Krishna, please forgive us for our offenses and bless us so we can always serve you. Krishna just smiles to them. Here isn't this child form. He's still tight. They're free now from the tree. But Krishna is still tight by these ropes. So that Krishna is tied by the love of his mother. He's agreeing to be tied. He can free everyone from the bondage of material life. He can destroy or create worlds, anything. But why is he just taking like a baby tied to this robe? Because of the love of his mother. His devotees appear to speak mother. And through these pastimes he's exchanging loving relations with his devotees. He smiles at the two sansukuare. They circumambulate him and they go off back to the stanley planets. So this is also another UFO story. Sansuku were from another planet. They were cursed to come to this planet and become trees here and be liberated by Krishna. After they were they were fulgent beings. They had a very special form they could there. They were immediately picked up from the other planet. As soon as they were liberated from that curse. Guberas immediately sent his means of transportation and they were taken off back to the other planet. Meanwhile, all the adults come and see these trees fallen down. They ask the kids why are you sleeping? We saw that Ka knocked down these two trees and out came these two entities. Very effulgent people, very brilliant. So much light was even already difficult to even see that. And they went around Krishna a few times and they were offering prayers. And then they went into this, you know, they went off into all this space. You kids, why do you think all these things speculating. Why can't imaginations. Why can't you just tell what really happened? It really happened with the parents and I cause too far out. Too fantastic. Don't believe it. Then you know, none of my scream. Oh, Krishna's pretty. Then all of a sudden he just got overwhelmed by his parental mood. Yoga Maya keeps all the elder people in this illusion that well, Krishna is just a little baby and dependent on them. And then he grabbed frees Krishna and said why this mother is sort of putting in all these dangerous situations. What's he doing? And she, you know, even in the Spiritual world. It seems that none of our ash was scolding Nagasura, why don't you take care of the baby? Look what happened. She didn't have anything to do with it, right? I mean, it wasn't her. She wasn't like anything she had arranged. But these things are very quickly forgotten because then they just start picking up Krishna and kissing his cheek and embracing him and everything smoothed out. So all these different circumstances, even the so called miseries, um, the Maharaj is chastising his orders. He must have been feeling some dukkha, some misery, some anxiety for that. But these are quickly forgotten because when within a few seconds they're again glorifying Krishna, remembering his past times and seeing him. So if we can always be remembering Krishna's pastimes and we can always be glorifying Ka, then whatever the difficulties we face, we can remember very quickly. They melt away as something not very significant. Certainly with you. So does desire only to protect Krishna. She was there. It was only out of love that Nanda Maharaj even said anything. So out of love, this may be said Sa well, because here we're here because we're rebelling against God. So we remember Krishna. Not that we have to always remember that Krishna is God. Even here in this world, when someone becomes attached to Ka, just to hear the past times of Ka, they don't necessarily remember that Krishna as always God just hearing about Krishna as it. But because basically we're here that we rebelled against Ka with our Father in the conditional state, we need to for our mind sake. Because our mind is conditioned here. So to deal with this conditioned mind, then we need to also remember that there is all the reasons why until we get to the actual level of development of Ka, that time automatically fear and other such considerations as motivations for doing devotional service fade away to the background. And the positive motives of doing things for the pleasure of Guru and Krishna become Brahman. Because we're preaching. Also we need to remember how Ka, once we're fully absorbed in that, once we're fully purified from this material karma and we have our spiritual bodies, and then to engage in some pastime of Ka, so we become like actors of the states. The Yoga Maya gives the actors a blessing that they forget their actors and they think they're actual participants. So then you can really get into the past tense fully. You're just playing the game that you're actually playing. Like Mahamaya makes us all think we're the actors and the material worlds or we don't really have anything to do with this material world. So if that didn't happen, how would people take it seriously, being able to satisfy their material desires? So she sets the scene so that people can forget about Ka. Yogamai doesn't make us forget about Ka. She always helps us to remember Krishna. But instead of remembering Krishna in some other relationship, we remember Krishna in accordance to the relationship. And the service we have with Krishna supposed to offer is a month of Dharma. It's when you're supposed to sing the Dhammada astikam every day. It says Mahayva krila. So we combine both of these together. This is a special month. Dhammada month is a very special month. There are many, though, for everything you do in this month. Hundred times the benefits of this question. They do naturally do more things because you need more dividends as a sale line. You buy more things this way, later on, when the sale's over, you're not going to get the same bargain. I don't know that much. Based on historical reason why? I don't know. How can we? Sometimes it seems that if we delve, dovetail it, it's actually just a way to gratify the material desires. It's sometimes for me, difficult to see that the purification or that that desire is actually being purified. Is it actually possible to have material desires taken away or purified without a dovetailing process so you don't fall into more attachment for material conflicts? Material desires are always coming in so many different forms and types. It's not a consistency in what we desire materially. But if we're doing devotional service, there's a consistency in our devotional service. We always say Krishna. So if we have some strong desire for something, if it can be done for Ka, we can do something for Ka. If it can be dovetailed, then although these different desires may change, but there's a constant devotional service as required. Doing devotional service is the hearing about Ka, just like it states in the first Canka Bhagavata, that by doing Bhagavata nitya sevaya, it explains Nashta praya badray sutya Bhagavatya sevaya. Almost all of the unwanted contaminations in the heart are illuminated. So by practicing devotional service, by hearing the Bhagavata, by chanting our wrongs, we get free from these. Gradually, all these unrelated desires are diminished. At the very beginning. It may not be possible to completely have all of them disappear. Because as long as we're living in this world, it's going to go natural. It's like the dovetail. You have to eat. I said, okay, why? Well, can we get rid of this desire of eating? Just not eat? How is that possible? We don't eat, then we can't live in the world. You know, you have to eat. So then you don't eat. Between me and you, don't eat bora, just eat food off it cooked by the rotis and Prashant. So dovetailing doesn't mean it's like you're dovetailing. Some people think you're dovetailing. Sense gratification. You have to, Prabhupada explained, in other sense, to survive in the world, to just exist, you have to have sense gratification to do something simply for it. Gratifying the senses. That's what we really call sense gratification. Everything we do, I look outside and say, oh, Mariah is so beautiful. It's gratifying the senses. Some people like the city lights in the night. They think, oh, it's a beautiful lights in New York. So nice. So everything you like having that pleasing to your senses is gratifying your senses, whether it's sight, hearing, tasting. So when you're in the world, you're going to. Some things are going to be gratifying depending on your mode of nature, and some things are going to be unpleasant. So you can't live in the world without experiencing some gratification and some miserable situation. So we dovetail that we do things not on the basis we don't do things simply because we're gratifying to our senses. We do things in such a way that Krishna will be pleased. So the constant association with Ka, constantly bringing the thing back to Ka, gradually purifies our desires until we actually spot Hennessy Java's facing Krishna. If somebody wants to do something or has some desire, I can do this for Ka, but it's actually. It's not really very beneficial. Useful for Ka. A lot of endeavor has to be done in order to do something which is supposed to be devotional service, then that's what we call over endeavor. It's not even. It's like an over endeavor. It's not really devotional. If you had to really stretch it so thin that the connection with Krishna consciousness is so vague and so irrelevant, it's so difficult to achieve it. One question, whoa, are you really doing it for Krishna? It's like people, Arjuna was Eshatriyama. You say, well, he had his nature was, you know, to get into fights and to be chivalrous and to be bought, so on and so forth. So you couldn't just like change his entire nature all of a sudden. You couldn't change it. So instead Krishna wanted to do that and do your natural propensities for ka. Some may be good at talking or good at an artist. So it's not that we don't be an artist in Sanskrit, we do the actual Krishna. Some people are musicians who do music for Krishna. So you want to just do it to get name and fame and don't really offer it to Krishna. That's part of Krishna. You can't change people. Krishna Khan is very practical. It's not trying to make people, you know, completely give everybody frontal anatomies and stop their thought process. Process, you know, it's very realistic. People have different natures and different tendencies. And these can be purified by using them in Krishna service. But it requires a lot of intelligence, a lot of guidance from guru and Krishna to always keep it within the parameters, within that, that's allowed. As soon as we go beyond, then we're not protected. Samacharya gave an example like Sita, she had a protective circle that was made by Lakshman. Within that circle she could move here and there. But as soon as she would step out and Ramana could take her, we're given a certain area. Like in the Bible it says you can take all the fruits in the garden. The Matthew is wonderful. So throughout the scriptures and different parables and different examples, the same thing. You're given a certain range, you can move in. And then you say, well, sometimes you think, well, this is almost like sense gravity. So why not sense gratitude? But there's a difference. And then once you go beyond that line, then you're on your mind. Krishna has limit to how much he can tolerate, how much he can protect, how much he'll cover you forever. If you go beyond that limit, then it's at our own risk. And Lord Nityananda says the same thing. He says, if you do something that's not approved by the guru, the point is, what's Sanskrit and what's not? Has the guru approved it? There's the scriptures and the Shastras. Who if not, then we can't do it. So we get. That's why everything we do, we get a blessing from the guru. Then we have the seal of approval, Good housekeeping. This perverted reflection in the material world. IRIS ISI International standard. So we have our seal. Viscon standard. And if you do it, that way, then it's all right. Just like some people wanted to get initiation. But in order to have a worldwide movement, there has to be some discipline. There has to be some order. There has to be a system. So the society made a system. You have to get a recommendation in writing from your temple authority. If you haven't lived for one year at your temple. Or that authority has to consult with the previous authorities and he has to give a thing in writing. I explained all this. People still want to come and get initiated. But they don't have the recommendation. So what can I do now? If I get it, I'll be encouraged, accused of sense gratification. Other leaders and devotees or people may say, look, this Guru wants to increase his number of disciples. So he's giving initiation outside the rules. He's doing it for sense gratification. What do you think? So I follow the rules he's doing. Even for Guru, every wedding Kolya to do, we had to follow the rules. Otherwise you get accused. When you're cool, you get accused. Oh, look at the guy. He has some other money. So these rules keep us, you know, keep honest people honest. If you want to cheat and fool people, then you can do that. But Krishna will know that eventually other people, other sincere devotees also find out. I want to be honest. And just to help us, there's some rules. I give my Sadhu, my Shastra, my Guru with all of the rules that we're protected from making mistakes. Sad. Sam. Ram Sam Sa. Yeah. Ra Ra. It Lo record it. Don't post this one. It Samangalah. Krishna.
