19950911 || Bhagavad-gītā (5.4) Class || Heidelberg, Germany #JayapatakaSwamiArchives

A 1995 spiritual lecture (Bhagavad-gītā class) delivered in Heidelberg, Germany by Jayapataka Swami presenting bhakti-yoga as a means for self-realization and liberation from bodily identification. The speaker argues that spreading this consciousness (per teachings of Lord Chaitanya and founder Srila Prabhupada) is necessary to end social ills—racism, violence (example: Bosnia), and ecological destruction—and calls for missionaries/visionaries to lead a global spiritual revolution. The talk uses illustrative stories (a German boy with a painful boil, family reactions, traveler, and doctor) to contrast temporary/palliative fixes with lasting spiritual solutions.

Jayapataka Swami
Sa Ram Ram Sarigo Mari. We are living in the city of the body. But we think we are the body. That's the illusion. How do we actually realize that we are the living force, the consciousness in the body? That can only be done by following a process of yoga. So this bhakti yoga gives perception of the self. Realization of the self by perception. And much more realization of the Supreme Lord by perception. And immediately by this process, one can get this relief from the Karma. So that someone is performing pure devotional service. The symptom is that they'll immediately feel a tremendous relief in their consciousness. So this whole Ka Conscious movement is meant for doing welfare work. Meant for doing the greatest welfare work. And freeing people from the bondage of this material world. Giving them this highest benediction of life. Many of you are actively propagating this message of the Lord. Fulfilling the desires of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. And therefore you are very blessed. Lord Chaitanya. He said, every human in the universe should take up Ka consciousness. Liberate themselves. And they should give this to others. This is what our movement is about. It's not only to liberate people. But to train them to give this process to the next person. So that they can also liberate themselves. We would like to see the entire universe liberated from all kinds of suffering and violence. The present day. There's so much, so many problems in the world. Look at the problem that's being faced today. In Bosnia, 10 years ago, nobody could imagine the brothers neighbors had been killing each other. Why do these things happen in the 20th century, almost the 21st century. How is it possible? Everyone is asking himself all over the world. But these things are not going to stop happening. Unless people get out of the bodily identification. Our bodies are all slightly different. So you have categories of bodies, races of bodies, colors of bodies. So the people who do body identification. They're identifying as a particular bodily category. So then they group together and they become enemies or friends with other categories. They make alliances and make enemies. And they think we have a group interest. This racism in its various forms is described in the Vedas as Gehatma bhuti. It's described in the nature of animal life. Just like if you have a dog and you want to convince a dog, my dear dog, you're not really a dog. Be friends with this cat. You're actually the spirit. So you can't even do it because the dog is this condition. He is a dog. Maybe you can get a dog that returns with a cat. I don't know, but we can't convince a dog that he's not a dog. That is the nature of animal life. But a human being has enough intelligence. They have the ability to philosophically analyze things. They can actually understand we are not the body. And if everyone understood we are the living force in the body, then why? Because of bodily categories when we fight and kill each other. If you want peace in the world, this consciousness has to be spread. It requires visionaries, it requires missionaries, it requires, requires revolutionaries to create this spiritual revolution around the world. Unless people can come beyond the bodily identification. You say all humans. Humanitarianism is not the solution either. We don't have a right as human beings to cause animal suffering and nature destruction either. All the present philosophies that have been going on have ruined the ecology, have ruined nature's balance and are even now killing the human beings. There's a need in the world, an urgent need to change the way people think. And that is why our founder, he left India and came to the West. Srila Prabhupda said, I've come here not to beg from people, not to ask anything from people, but to change the way they think. Let people think not in this conditioned way, but in a liberated way. As spiritual beings, then we can have peace in the world. And then people can liberate themselves from this material conditioning and go back to the spiritual world. At the end of their life they can achieve love for God. But instead of seeing that this is the real long term solution, maybe there's temporary solutions and they may bring a temporary result, but the problem is going to come back again and again until you have the real solution. The real solution is changing the way people think, having a real spiritual understanding about what life is, what existence is. And that is what the Bhagavad Gita is giving us. This is the wisdom that we need to bring the world to the next higher level. Otherwise, in spite of all the technological advances, we still remain in our consciousness in a very undeveloped stage. I think before I told you the example about you always want solutions. Looking for the solution. You know the example I told before about the child who had a boil on his back. He was a German 10 year old boy. He had a boil on his back and it was driving, you know, boil. What do you say in German? How do you say viola Violet? The boiler. So the boiler was a big multi headed boiler, carbuncle, big one. And it was throbbing, causing so much pain with every heartbeat. It was just throbbing. And the boy was crying, mother, mother, it's hurting me. I'm in pain. Help me, Mommy. Help me. She lil light on your stomach. I see. Oof, oof. So red. She called her sister. What to do? She said, I know. I went to a. I know a special natural cure to relieve that pain. We put these leaves around it. We put leaves, little ice and gold. We blow on the boiler. Relief. Relief from the pain. My sister had to go off. She couldn't sit there going all the day. Mother had to do something. All of a sudden. Mommy, it's hurting again. It's coming back. It's hurting. Meanwhile, the uncle came. He was the brother of the mother. He had been traveling all over Tibet and Thailand and many Asian countries. China, Japan. I said, what's wrong? Your nephew is very sick. He's got this boiler. His boiler is causing so much pain. Do you have a solution? You've been traveling everywhere. I have a solution for this type of problem. Please help your nephew. What can we do? Solution. You should put him out of his misery. Subcutane. Then the pain will stop. When it leaves this body, there'll be no pain. No. But my dear brother, I was looking for a better solution than that. I think you better come back a little later. Maybe there's a few countries you haven't visited. So then the father came back and the mother said, look at your son. He's in great pain. Okay, I'll get a doctorate. Went and got the doctor. The doctor came with a little black vein. Even here in Germany, they're using black veins. It's universal. Living with a little black vein. From India to Frankfurt to Hannover, America. So he come with a black bag and he saw the boil. He said, I know what to do. He opens his bag, pulls out the surgical knife, the scalpel. My voice is a ninth. No, no, no, no. Father, he's going to kill me with that knife. Please, I don't want to die in the hand of this doctor. No, no. Don't let him kill me. I'd rather die any other way. Not the moment. The doctor is going to stab me and kill me. No, no. He was getting really frightened. That brother said, don't worry. Don't worry. He's not going to kill you. It's all like, no, no. I know he's going to kill me. So the doctor went and he cleansed the boil. Took out all the dirty blood and pots, all that horrible things. Put antiseptic and cleaned it, bandaged it. Then the boy he had relieved. No more. No more throbbing, no more pain. This little slate scar was there. The doctor cleaned off everything. Put the thing. The father said. Please forgive my boy. He was mistreating you, accusing you. It's all right. Sometimes our patients like that. We still have to do our job. We have to help them, whether they treat us nicely or not. It's all in my duty. It's all right. I didn't take any offense. Just a small boy. It's all right. The doctor. He left. So you understand the story. Thank you for watching our videos. Be sure to subscribe to our channel.
