20000824 || Śrī Kṛṣṇa Janmāṣṭamī Class (ŚB 10.5.1-2) || Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

A recorded Janmāṣṭamī class (Kuala Lumpur) in which the speaker reads and comments on Śrīmad Bhagavatam 10.5.1–2, focusing on the Vedic birth ceremony (Jatakarma) surrounding Krishna’s appearance and how Nanda Maharaja performed it. The lecture explains ritual details (cutting the umbilical cord, worship, recitation of Vedic hymns), large-scale charity and festivities (gifts, decorated cows, music), and purificatory samskaras for body, possessions, senses, mind, and soul. It contrasts natural village life with modern urban living and emphasizes austerity, satisfaction, and practicing Krishna consciousness to avoid contamination. The talk includes references to Srila Prabhupada and Vishvanath Chakravarti Thakur, cultural anecdotes, and pastoral exhortations to observe devotional practices and offer worship.
Sa after bathing and purifying himself and dressing himself properly, he invited Brahmanas who knew how to recite Vedic mantras. After having these qualified Brahmanas recite auspicious Vedic hymns, he arranged to have the Vedic birth ceremony celebrated for his newborn child according to the rules and regulations and he also arranged for the worship of the living gods and foreflowers. Report by Srila Prabhupada Srila Vishwanath Chakravarti Thakur has discussed the significance of the words Namdas2. The word two, he says, is not Jews to fulfill the sentence because without to the sentence is incomplete. Therefore the word to is used for a different purpose. Although Krishna appeared as the son of Devaki, Devaki and Masudev did not enjoy the Jatya Karma, the festival of the birth ceremony. Instead this ceremony was enjoined by Nanda Maharaj. As stated here, Nandas could not disclose your son Krishna is actually my son. You are his father In a different way. Spiritually, because of fear of hamster, Vasudeva could not observe the festival for Krishna's birth. Nanda Maharaj, however, took full advantage of this opportunity. The Jatakarma ceremony can take place where the umbilical cord connecting the child or placenta is cut over. Since Krishna was brought by Vasudeva to the house of Nanda Maharaj, where was the chance for this to happen? In this regard, Vishwanath Chakravarti Thakur desires to prove with evidence from many shastras that Ka actually took birth as the son of Yasoda before the birth of Yogamaya who was therefore described as Lords as the Lord's younger sister. Even though there may be doubts about the cutting of the umbilical cord, and even though it is possible that this was not done when the supreme personality of Godhood appears, such events are regarded as factual. Ka appeared as Raha Dev in the nostril of Brahma and therefore Brahma is described as the father Brahma Devila. Also significant are the words Karayam as being overwhelmed with jubilation over the birth of his son Nanda Maharaj did not see whether the cord was cut or not. Thus he performed the ceremony very gorgeously. According to the opinion of some authorities, Krishna was actually born as the son of Risoda. In any case, without regard for material understandings, we can accept that Nanda Maharaj's celebration for the ceremony of Krishna's birth was proper. This ceremony is therefore well known everywhere as to the Srimad Bhagavatam 10th canto 5th chapter 1st and 2nd verse in the matter of the meaning of Nanda Maharaj Otatsa. So this is very special for us. Two reasons. One is the celebration of Krishna's Manusa is the celebration manga Maharaj's activities for the appearance of Krishna. And the second is that because not less than the first is that at this age the Prabhupada also appeared in the world. Actually he was to also appear at me Sri Prabhupada such a pure devotee that his appearance and everything is always granted with Krishna. His life was connected with Krishna. So today the devotees are requested to make offerings of homages worship that we remember also Shiloh Rejoice in his appearance in this world. Remember how as a representative of Vyaskadeva he's giving us the transcendental message of the Vedas of Krishna consciousness. So today both of these celebrations are held. Remember Baby Bhagavatam class aspect primarily and the rest of the day will be more or less dedicated to Shayla Prabhupada's grasp. Nanda Maharaj actually. But he knows that this is his child. And the Acharya and Samanya they are also stating that reality. That is the fact that Krishna's appearance is the son of Masudev and Devati is less relevant or less important than his appearance as son of an important survey work. It's less anyway. It's the more important factor is how Nanda Maharaj is observing. Also how more fortunate is Nanda Maharaj and the soda that they're celebrating the Nandamot they're getting to celebrate all the challenging festivities. Masudev he cannot come out and say this is my son. Because at the beginning would reveal Chintan said who is this child here? And he has to fear Vishnu up here. So he doesn't know exactly who Vishnu is. Kamsa he is observing his own kind of Hudson. He's sending Putin out to kill all the babies within one year of birth. That way to ensure that any enemy of his will be killed. That a child who is born will be killed Somehow there's a similar description in the Bible about King Herod ordering all the babies to be killed. The subject for some scholars to analyze why these two pastimes are so this history of Ka is very well known and handed out 5000 years. Subraha Devkana is the son of Brahma, the nostril. All these examples are given. It is possible for Krishna first to appear as son of Misodha and then transfer himself over to Devaki and Then again transfer himself back to Nanda Maharaj by Kosugir. In the Vedic culture, there's a system of observing the after the birth of the child, for the father to give charity I will be festival. So Nanda Maharaj was rejoicing the appearance of a son in his family who has given huge amounts of charity to the next verse. Satakombara Vidam Translation Vandal Maharaj gave 2 million cows completely decorated with cloth and jewels and charity to the Ravanas. He also gave them seven hills of rain covered with jewels and with cloth that made with gold embroidery. Cows too. Is that a lot of cows in our house? Not many. Two million is not too many. How long would it take you to give away 2 million cows last night just to put that thing on the head of people not given to one Brahmanas given to many Brahmas. Go and give them. And though our eyes were very opulent, so many cows to give away. He was so happy that he was giving out so much charity without just out of sheer rejoicing. This was one way of purifying his wealth. Next verse is very interesting. Birds Kalina sahna sochabra samskara O king. By the passing of time, land and other material possessions are purified. By bathing, the body is purified by being cleansed. Unclean things are purified by purificatory ceremonies. Birth is purified by austerity, the senses are purified. And by worship and charity offered to the Brahmanas. Material possessions are purified by satisfaction, the mind is purified. And by self realization or Ka consciousness, the soul is purified. Report. These are Shastic injunctions concerning how one can purify everything. According to Vedic civilization, unless purified, anything we use will infect us with contamination. In India 5,000 years ago, even in the villages such as that of Nanda Maharaj, people knew how to purify things. And thus they enjoy even material life without contamination. So we should teach people how to enjoy material life without contamination. People are living in a material world, so they cannot help but survive here. How to live here without getting contaminated? How to remain in uncontaminated state? The Ka conscious is very important. Just like you have lamb, that sometimes people over roll the lamb and it becomes burnt out. But with time the lamb gradually regains is purified, regains its strength. The more dirty you take a bath, it purifies the body, right? And when you have like you have dirty plates or something, how do you purify them? You wash them. It's Very practical unclean things. You purify by cleansing them. How do you purify birth samskaras. So there are many dasam samskaras prescribed for the human being. So those samskaras purified was birth and existence. Very interesting here that by all the senses are purified. Remember austerities. Sometimes devotees face problem that the senses are agitated or the senses are disturbing too much in the material world. The solution is they say you should give the senses whenever they want. But actually you find the senses are never stopped again. But here it says the way you purify the senses is by some austerities. We're in a chatramas. This is a time we do some austerity. A little bit depending how much you want to do. Some do for the full four months heavy austerities. And some do the last month of practice. Some of the last five days of Vishwam Chakra. The Buddha Saphena Austerities as purifies the senses. The people are against this type of austerity general nowadays. Therefore their senses remain unpurified and the senses drag them into activities that are not beneficial. So it's important that we observe some austerity. We want to purify our senses. Says hereby Worship and charity offered to the Brahminists. Material possessions are purefah. Traveling all over Malaysia receiving charity and engaging in a Krishna service. He was purified the possessions of all the people. Anyway, whoever gives charity may get their material possessions purified. But when sometimes people working outside, they wonder how can I purify? How can I dovetail my work and bring some material things? So how do I connect that to Krishna? So here the connection with Krishna is by believing in charity, by worshipping charity, by spending for worship, giving charity to Ramanas. This purifies those maturely healthy possessions. How is the mind purified? Satisfaction is another important point that if we are remain in a satisfied state, satisfaction is actually a mental state. As soon as we are absorbed in desiring material things, we become dissatisfied. As soon as we just accept things that come naturally through our normal endeavors, then we become satisfied spiritually. We may have so many desires to want to see Krishna Gloria more and more and to see people become devotees. But those spiritual desires also give us satisfaction because they're not different from Krishna. On the other hand, material desires immediately create dissatisfaction. So we need to eliminate material desires and just have spiritual desires. Or even if we have material desires, we don't. We'll be satisfied with whatever comes. We just take advantage. This is enough material do our honest work and then we accept. So it's a kind of attitude. We orient our attitude to be satisfied that purifies the mind. So many times you find devotees really agitated. They're very dissatisfied. We try to trace out what is the cause of their dissatisfaction. We find that so many different desires are not being fulfilled and therefore they are as much dissatisfied. So how important that having the proper attitude is for us to actually achieve satisfaction or to purify the mind? And how to purify the soul? Yes. So it's a process of self realization or Ka consciousness. The soul is purified. The soul is purified. Of course, it will have an effect on everything. So Ka consciousness is the purifier of the soul at Mahman the dialects. So this is a very practical advice. So we practice the Ka Consciousness to purify self, take our vow to tumble. If we remain uncontaminated, then it's easier to survive this material world. So one of the aspects of Krishna consciousness is to avoid contamination. The more we allow ourselves to be contaminated by material nature, the more we fall down from our spiritual position. We are by nature pure spirit, soul. Why we are suffering so much contamination? Everything comes back to contamination. Because the nature of the soul is Satirananda. It's eternally blissful knowledge. So why is the question of suffering? It's because of contamination. So the more that we remain uncontaminated or we purify ourselves from the contamination, the happy we are. If you don't take bath, they will develop eventually disease with uncleanliness, infections and other things will come. Just like the body gets infected because of uncleanliness. Similarly, all up and down and all the different aspects that were discussed here, feeling neglect, they become contaminated. Contamination means a change of our consciousness, change of our situation from pure to contaminated. Be very careful about these things. So Dhana Maharaj, he knew all these things. And therefore he was so happy to have a son. He wanted to perform the Samskara for his purification. The birth of his son, he wanted to was a good occasion to give charity for the spiritual, for the benefit of his son. Also to the Brahmanas, when someone is rejoicing, it's a good opportunity to give charity. When they want to create some auspicious situation. He wants to give a blessing to his sons and giving name of his son. His giving charity. So much good karmas will come to his son. Two million cows, mountains of rice and with jewels on the top, giving charity. Sometimes people give charity in the name of the Father. Right? We Put the plaque up. This room is donated in memory of, you know, our mother and father. They want to do the punya for a room in the holy Ghum. Some prasadas to do for himself to see his forefathers. Here's ceremony where the father is giving charity nail the son. Sometimes you find that the goddesses come and they shove a bill in the hand of the little baby and have the baby come to give the donation. You can do it that way or you can also in the name of the son, the church, so they get the blessings. The Brahmanas recited auspicious veiling hymns which purify the environment by their vibration. The experts in reciting old histories like the Puranas, the experts in reciting the histories of royal families and the general reciters all chanted while singers sang. And many kinds of musical instruments like berries and tundubis played an accompaniment. There was a big festival of people who are coming and reciting the Paranas glories of great personalities. This way they were creating an auspicious environment. Vedic hymns Vaja Sam Vishna Samsikta Varaji Rakbihan Tara Bradshawpur. The residence of Vanda Maharaja was fully decorated with varieties of festoons and plagues. And at different places gates were made with varieties of flower gardens, pieces of cloth and mango leaves. The courtyards, the gates near the roads and everything within the rooms of the houses were perfectly swept and washed with water. We have Bundicha Marjanas, we have Nandam Woodsa Marjana also. After Chandmasana we do a quick cleanup. See, everything is neat and clean. While we have decorated, we have banana, mango leaves and around. So looks like we're doing this. We have gates decorated gates swept rolls washed with scented water. Almost the cows, the bulls and the calves were thoroughly smeared with a mixture of turmeric and oil mixed with the varieties of minerals. Their heads were bedecked with peacock feathers and they were garlanded and covered with cloth and golden ornaments. Rabbi explained how this is part of the Krishiko Raksha Vanitjam cow protection. The Maharaj belong to the vaishi community of M4E is protective in cows. Hardly imagine how nicely the cows and bulls and calves were cared for. Putting valuable clothes and gold. Even now people can't give gold to their wives. And here he's putting gold on the cows. Now people are wearing plastic bangles. That's considered opulent. Multicolored plastic bags. Big shops selling plastic. Before even you see like in Andhra Pradesh, you see some of These Adivasis ladies and they're wearing big silver bangles on their legs and hands. Because it's not gold, at least silver. They rain Some valuable medal is considered more appropriate to wear with frayel. So the ladies are all decorated with jewels and golds. Or to speak of the ladies. Even the cows are decorated with gold. How many cows have you seen with gold chain on them? Now they wear the don't wear gold chain on the road. So you know loot. So this is a standard how they they're caring for their cows. Giving such nice care, food, cleaning. The cowboy man dressed very opulently with valuable ornaments and garments such as coats and turbans. They're created this way. Carrying various presentations in their hands they approach the house of Nanda Maharaj. Yesterday I saw one devotee with some kind of like a court dress Siddhartha dress very opulent for the of the Creator like vest. So that wearing your best on this occasion Krishna appearance to everybody there wearing turbans and nice dresses and coming and giving gifts. What else overcame Krishna today and offer a feast. So the wives of the Gois they all decorated themselves very beautifully. Put on black ointment in the eyes and ornaments and everything. Hearing how your soda the queen a brigino bread to her son. Their lotus like face is extraordinarily beautiful. Being decorated with saffron and lily grown kumbhuma. The wives of the cowherd men hurried to the house of Mother Yasoda with presentations in their hands. Because of natural beauty, the wives had full hips and full breasts which moved as they hurried along. What is kupuma? It's a natural herb. No, I know what it is. But what is it? Grimalde selsun chemical. But here it's saying that's freshly grown kuma. That means it's a plant. It's a herb. Some kind of herb. Now I never see one is a kupuna plant. Have you seen it? Just curious. This is all natural things. Nice dresses, necklaces, fully grown grass, sandalwood called flower gardens, plates of gold. Everybody was very happy that to hear yes. So that I give a birth to a wonderful child known as Krishna. Prabhupada said this description because the coward man Women live a very natural life. The women develop natural feminine beauty with full hips and breasts. Because women in a modern civilization do not live naturally. Their hips and breasts do not develop as natural fullness. Because artificial living women have lost their natural beauty. Although they claim to be independent, advanced and material civilization. This description of the village Women gives a clear example of the contrast between natural life and artificial life. Of the condensed societies and such as that of the Western countries where topless violinist beauty may be easily purchased in clubs and shops and for public advertisements. So. And nowadays, in orange I have full breath to people by ways for the silicone inserts by operation anyway, natural light. Automatically they develop eventually that you're living in its urban situation. Contaminations natural life. Because it also wanted us to preach in the cities. Preaching in the cities. We're doing something. But so far, very few places have been able to establish this world. In humanities it seems very tough because everybody is so much urbanized that they don't. They're willing to pay money to go to the club and do exercises or to go in the field and work in the sun that they're not prepared. Sunset I saw. I was at an Alhat preaching festival in North Bengal. And the place we were staying, they were. They have this, what they call denki chow. You know, denki. I don't know if you want to think it is. It's. They take. They smash the greens by kind of a. There's a pivot log and it goes in the end of it. There's like a little hammerhead with a metal tip that goes into a metal cup. So this day they were making flat rice. So one lady was cooking the. The rice patty which had been soaked in some sand and sifting it, giving it to the daughter. The daughter was putting it inside the hole. And the grandma was stepping on this log on one side. Just step on it this up. And then it would smash down and flatten the rice. The girl, while she would step up again, go out. The girl would take out the rice and put in a new batch. It was like, you know, one, two. Everybody's, you know, doing their thing, ladies. And I saw this lady was maybe 60 years old. She was fit as anything. She was really, you know, everybody was in really good shape. Everybody know all our natural living and fresh air. And they're all making their morning cereal. They didn't have to, you know, go for all this. You know, they didn't have to do anything artificial. Everything was very natural. I was just thinking how in the west, you know, they pay so much money. But I was in. We went to Melbourne. We went to take a swim with the Subak, swam. We had a big pool. We had to pay $8 to swim. But then to pay more also upstairs they had also like this machines to do handling and wood lifting and everything. That's more to pay something. I didn't ask how much, but they didn't know how much. But because people, we don't get a proper exercise. We don't have, you know, we're sitting in a computer all day working or something that we had to go and pay for a little more natural way of life. People automatically healthier. We should give credit where it's due that that kind of lifestyle is naturally more healthy. That's the point Rav was making. Some people may get upset, but this we should appreciate that there's a more natural way of life. What we have today is the artificial standard. So what we think is progress, we save time. We can buy ready made cereals instead of making it fresh on the spot. Ready made. It means that I got to put some preservative in it. They waste so much in packaging here. There's no packaging, no use of, no strain on ecology. No preservative fresh same day cereal made pot. Everybody's got a little exercise, more natural way of doing that. I believe I was impressed by the whole thing. But to see how it works so glorifies the gobies. They all go in jewel earrings and decorated with bangles, colored dresses. Everything was moving very beautifully. Everybody came to offer blessings to the newborn child Krishna Ta Asish offering blessings to newborn child Krishna the wives and daughters. The coward men said, may he become the king of Raj and long maintain all its inhabitants. They sprinkled a mixture of turmeric, powder, oil and water upon the birthless supreme Lord and offered their prayers. Now that the all remaining unlimited Lord Krishna, the master of the cosmic manifestation had arrived within the estate of Maharajman. The various things of musical instruments resounded to celebrate the great festival. Everybody became so happy. The Calvin enjoyed the great festival by splashing one another's body with a mixture of curd prevent smell, butter and water. They threw butter on one another and smeared it on one another's bodies. Now there's not enough to eat. They have enough. They can smear it, you know, they can rejoice with it. There's no limit how much these products. Even today we went to that. You were with us. We were in Vrindavan. We went that day to bar. You didn't know. You missed out. We went to this little village called Chintzoli, which is Chitra Devi's village. And there Tina Mandurgabu. He asked the local head of the village that we like to give the devotees some Paribati. Within 20 minutes, 10 minutes he went. He brought back buckets and Buckets of buttermilk. All the devotees could take fresh buttermilk. Instead they've been churning the milk and getting the and getting the butter out. So they had butter. Even now, although they're strained still they can provide or to speak of $5 and used to unlimited no corettes were available. The great minded Maharaj Nanda gave clothing, ornaments, cows and charity to the coward men or to please Lord Vishnu. And thus he improved the condition of his own son in all respects. He distributed charity to the Suttas, the Magadas, the Vandis and men of all other professions according to their educational qualifications and satisfied everyone's desires. In those days, if somebody was educated then they were given charity. That education was useful for the society. Vidya Gupta, Jeevana, those who are between their life gathering more and more knowledge. Reciters of histories, professional reciters of Puranas all these kind of people are giving charity. The purpose of our national is to give charity is to please Vishnu. He did everything that pleased Vishnu to please Vishnu were satisfied. All his devotees learned Ramanas and other learned personalities. This roundabout way was Vishnu was to be satisfied. The most fortunate Mohini, the mother of Bala Deva was honored by Nanda Maharaj and Soda. Thus she also dressed gorgeously and decorated herself with a necklace, a garland and other ornaments. She was busy wandering here and there to receive the women who are guests at the festival. Explains only because Rohini she was another wife of Vasudeva's because her husband was imprisoned, she was not wearing any decorations. A wife doesn't dress up very nicely when husband is not present. But because it was Fishna's jambostomy. So even she dressed up wearing nice Nice ornaments and dresses were given by Nana Maharaj to the Hindu. She was also busy receiving the other women who were coming as guests. She was so fortunate she was able to raise fish and ball around the therefore she is called Mahabhara. She's even more fortunate than Sid. He's not able to enjoy the childhood pastime. But Rahimi, she's bringing up all around Krishna Also helping mother Yasoda bringing out Krishna. She's very fortunate. Mahabhara. So this is auspicious day. One more verse here. So beautiful. These verses determine of the supreme personality of Godhead, his transcendental father. I was therefore always naturally endowed with the opulence of all wealth. The beginning from Lord Krishna's appearance there it became the place for the pastime. So that God is unfortunate. Madhavani would appear very soon. What was Already happening. But when Krishna appeared, it will become opulent in all respects. That concludes the mandalata of restriction. Any questions? This is a natural thing. See how the great devotees are organizing their mindset. It's like a cow and a bull who are being beaten by preachers. How they maintain mental satisfaction in the middle of being beaten. It's a big lesson for all of us. Just when I was in London yesterday, there was a devotee of disciple Bhakti Chumaraj who somehow developed cancer of the bowel. It operated on her, but it was not successful and cancer took over. She was in extreme pain, but she was always chanting. And her womb was decorated with the pictures of Krishna and everything. Hearing the tapes of Prabhupada and Guru. And so the day that she left, just like two days ago, so many devotees were with her. She was carrying Japa with him. Nobody even could suspected she was going to leave. She finished the one round and touched the head to her head. When she touched the head like this, said Hari Krishnara Shetan, yet she's gone. So Harry, go back to Chumara. She went and said, only fit me lurking. So some nasties were. Because you know how courageous she is at facing death like that. We're supposed to struggle to avoid death. But at one point when you cannot avoid it, then you just have to face it. But that's the most difficult thing. But she's faced it very gravely. And this gratification like that. There are so many heroes in this one. Somehow how does she keep a satisfied mind in the midst of dying of cancer? Then we naturally saw initial response when some horrible thing happens. Like when probably lost her children. But then very soon she adjusted her mindset and became again peaceful and satisfied. She went to Krishna and said, whatever this, but you still lost my words. Doesn't mean she didn't feel pain when that happened. Her sounds were filled with her sleep. But after some time she learned, she adjusted how to deal with that. So we are going to face the traumas of our life or to purify the mind and begin to adjust such that we see it in a philosophical way. We don't allow it to be disturbing us. So many times we find devotees who are carrying with them some big mental burdens. They're either bitter or frustrated or dissatisfied or angry. Even modern science now saying people who have this type of negative mindset, they generally don't live very long and they have more disease. So this is a big thing now in the west. You know, think positive. But it's all Again they do everything in artificial way like back therapy or something. Are we on our own after therapy this way discussing nice things. You want to tell us how to keep a satisfied mindset? What's the point? It says here we purify the mind that we're always satisfied. So how I keep the mind always satisfied? What is the secret Shantakrishna? Save the Lord. Several satisfied by thinking how you can make that Guru and Krishna satisfied. Today is our day. We want to satisfy Krishna and Prabhupada Yasuku today Prabhupada has given us everything. God Sadheva is the original Guru. All the teachings that the Guru teaches are based on the Veda. Therefore actually the Guru does his teachings that are different from the Bhagavad. Bhagavad Nidya Sevaya. There's a book Bhagavad and person Bhagavad. The person Bhagavad lives by the teachings of the book Bhagava. So respect to the Guru this time from China. It's representative of our Lord Yasuda. Today we're supposed to offer him the Abova simultaneous with the deeds do that supposed to put in front of robot all these boats and babies both two times two double and simultaneously offer both supposed to do pushpanchari Pujas and offer homologies. We hope that every morning we will offer this many a time in the midst so homage for the gratification and realization of sh. Thank you very much. Thank you for watching our videos.
