2002 || Chipped Rice Festival || Atlanta, USA #JayapatakaSwamiArchives

This is a recorded multi-speaker spiritual discourse (YouTube) by Jaya Pataka Swami recounting the life and pastimes of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, focusing on the episode where Raghunath Das Goswami encounters Chaitanya and the origin/significance of the dahi-chura (chipped rice/yogurt) festival at Panihati. The speaker explains Raghunath Das's family background, his tax-trouble episode, Lord Chaitanya and Nityananda's merciful ‘punishment’ of hosting and feeding devotees, festival rituals (mixing yogurt, milk, condensed milk and fruits in many pots, public distribution), and doctrinal points about guru, mercy, and devotional service. The talk includes anecdotes, practical festival details, and exhortations for devotees to develop Krishna consciousness.
Jam. Sam. Ram. Ram. It's. It's Sam.
Translation by his Divine Mary with the ropes of his causes Mercy Sigrishna Chaitanya Mahatrabhu employed a trick to deliver Radukan Dask of swine from the blind well of contemptible family life. He made Raghunath Das Goswami one of his personal associates. Placing him under the charge of Saruk Ramadar Goswami. He offered my obeisances unto Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Lord Chaitanya he was having many pastimes in Jagannath Puri and having varieties of transcendental pleasure.
And.
Sometimes works to Chanticleer would feel great separation from Ka. He didn't manifest his feelings externally because he was worrying about causing the devotees unhappiness. Actually, the separation that Lord Chaitanya felt was so profound it really cannot be described. At that time she was in the mood of Radharani. When Radharani felt extreme separation from Krishna.
Then.
At that time Visakha would talk to her about Krishna and give her some sustenance. Sometimes Lalita would talk to Ramadan Ramana. So in the same way, when the Lord Chaitanya felt acute pains of separation from Ka. The Ramananda Rai talked about Ka and the sweet songs that Srila Madhar kept Chaitanya Mahaprabhu alive during the daytime. Lord Chaitanya associated with many different. So his mind was a little diverted from that separation. But at night when he was alone, all he could think about was Krishna. And his separation increased very rapidly. Sri Ramananda Rai and Sri Ramadan used to stay with him and recite verses of Krishna's pastimes and sing appropriate songs. In this way you'll be satisfied. Stuba Saka used to give Krishna happiness when he was feeling separation from other Ravanandurai gave happiness to Lord.
She killed her.
So Raghuna Das he wise assisting survey. So this chapter is entitled Lord Chaitanya meets Raghuna Das Goswami. How did Raghunath Das meet Lord Chaitanyanda? Raghuna Das was assigned of a very rich family. His uncle and Dan and his father, the joint family. They were the lords of the feudal lords of a particular area in Bengal. But had to have thieves. They have to collect the taxes change to the king every year. 12 million gold coins. Right now our gold coin Cougar m is about 200 or $300. It's gone up recently North American. So that you can just imagine how much. How fabulous. Well, that's what they paid in taxes. The System was they had to supposed to pay 2/3 of all the taxes to the government and one third they.
Can keep.
As they're over here.
So.
They'Re one of the most wealthy families, especially Hindu families. Because of course the king was ruler, Lord Chet Bhad Raghuna Das, he wasn't attached to this situation. He wanted to join Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's Sakir temple then. And he wanted to become one of Lord Chaitanya's associates. So he went to see Lord Chaitanya in Santi Pui. When Raghunatha and his family life went to meet Sri Sithanyama, the Lord gave him worthy instructions by his cause's mercy, actually go Chitanya. When he said, I wouldn't give up everything, I want to renounce. But what she said is, don't become a marketer, don't become a monkey. You renounce it. Many people when they face difficulties in their family life and I think I will be announced, that is not the renunciation. They are facing difficulty. They want to escape. That's it. So what happens is just to escape from their family problem, they take the role of financier. But actually they haven't really changed their attitude. They haven't developed a strong attachment for Krishna. So what happens after a while then they meet someone else and they think, well, this time the worst. It didn't work the last time because she wasn't right, he wasn't right. This time we're not always going to work. Probably a few people don't do that. In America it's quite common. So in India this wasn't allowed actually to leave your family except if you were renouncing. And then the people with the renounce and then later on they'd go back to another family. So it was kind of a circuitous route where divorce wasn't allowed. And so it was a bad thing. In Lord Chaitanya's eyes, you just renounce your family. And then just because you know you're not liking it, he said, better you remain in your family and you keep your mind at Krishna. You can always be ka conscious then you can, even though you do your family affairs very responsibly, but you keep your mind on Krishna. He gave the example. Say if a lady had a lover other than her husband, she'd do her household chores very nicely not to get discovered. But her mind would always be on the husband, on the lover, like that. Your real love is Krishna. You keep your mind on Krishna but you do your household duties very meticulously so then Raghunathas took that advice over Chaitanya and it said that for one year he acted just like an ordinary businessman he did all his activities very thoroughly, very responsibly so seeing this his uncle and father and mother they were all very satisfied it so happened though that there was one Muslim official.
It.
Was not called Chaudhary.
And.
Robert explains in our purport Formerly when the Muhammad government was in power the person appointed a tax collector would collect the taxes from the local government dars or landholders he would keep one fourth of the collection for himself as a merchant and the Ghana he would deliver to the treasury of the government what happened was Irania Das made a deal to directly pay to the government so that when he cut out the tax collector who became extremely envious and wanted to get vengeance put back in oh it was actually, I mean it's 1,200,000 gold coins worthy tax it was 12 lakhs that's still only $300,000,000 more than that because that time purchasing part much bigger.
Said.
He was collecting 2,000,000 gold coins and should have delivered 1,500,000 to the government but he was only giving 1,200,000 thus making an extra profit of 300,000 gold coins seeing this, the Muhammad Shri who was a Turk became his rival he sent a confidential forward to the government.
Church.
He brought the minister in charge of finance he wanted to arrest Hirani Adas and Gom Das the two brothers but when they got they got the inside nose and they escaped so instead he arrested Raghu Nadas Here's Raghunath he just wants to be Krishna conscious what she told him that you do your household duties responsibly but you think of me and now his uncle and father they're cheating on the income tax to make more profit and he gets arrest there's nothing to do with all this so he was like collateral now you tell us where your father is otherwise you're going to punish you the Chaudhry went to beat him but when he saw Raghuna Blas's face his mind changed he couldn't beat him so he was just orally chastising but he was afraid to be there There are two reasons One, because he was a devotee and somehow Krishna was protecting Second, because he was from a Kayasta community which is kind of a mix of Chatriya and Maisha and they're known to be quite ruthless so he was afraid that maybe if he beat him then later on then he would have faced some problem. So the two things he didn't.
The.
Caiastas were very ruthless. So he was afraid. Then one day Raghunar died. He thought of a clever way how he could to get out of this. My dear sir, my father and his elder brother are both your brothers. All brothers always fight about something. Sometimes brothers fight about themselves. Sometimes they are very friendly dealings. There is no certainty when such changes will take place. Thus I am sure that although today you are fighting tomorrow you3 brothers will be sitting together in peace. Just as I am my father's son, so I am also yours. I am your dependent and you are my maintainer. For a maintainer to punish the person he maintains kings is not good. You are expert in all scriptures. Indeed you are like a living saint. So hearing Abraham Bassus very soft voice and his nice presentation the Muhammadan's heart became softer and he began to cry. Tears were going down his beard. Today you are. I accept you as my son. And by all means I shall have you released. He informed the minister. Release. You are going to dust. I began to speak to him with great affection. The elder brother of your father. He's very less intelligent. He employs 800,000 gold coins. I am also a shareholder. He should give me some portion. Arrange a meeting with me and your uncle. Let him do whatever he thinks best. It shall completely depend on his decision. So like that, Bhagwana Das had to arrange a meeting and worked out some deal. Little for the government, a little for the Chaudhary, a little for themselves. Everything was back to normal. So like this for over one year, Ramana Das, he was passing his time like a perfect businessman. Getting in all this kind of sorry. It's like a materialistic family life with a lot of cheating and business. Sometimes described like under Koopam. Like a defined world. You get in there become so so much suffering, anxieties. Sometimes financial ends don't meet. Sometimes there's disturbances in our family relationships. Sometimes the children are creating disturbances. So many different problems. Relatives, tax collector, whatever. Might be some problems.
And they are.
Then who's going to care? Everyone's facing the same problem. So nobody really. You can tell people, but they don't really care because everyone's in the same boat. So it's like if you're not well in some open field somewhere you're calling help, Help. No one there to help. No one there to help.
So.
Although you see of course this uncle, they were like devotees, Mochitani, they're like devotees. They would have classes of Bhagavatam. And they would have regular kid times. But otherwise they were doing all these business deals, you know, cheating. And it was. They were not 100% trying to devotion as such. They weren't using everything for. They're using something for Krishna. Something they were using for their sense gratification. So Lord Chaitanya called them Bhakta Pride. Almost devoted. They have really fully guided to the whole muda and devotional. So we discussed that about Bhakti Baav. It should be a mood of devotional service. They were looking. But actually if you go inside it, they were really doing all kinds of stuff. They weren't 100% into it yet. So it wasn't an ideal situation for Rabuna Das. And he was very eager to be with Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. It wasn't that he was disposable, disgusted or anything. He had anything he wanted. Family, beautiful wife, one with all kinds of money. But his calling was he really wanted to join Chaitanya Mahatrabu and his association. There's a chance in a lifetime. He doesn't want to miss it. What Chittanya was in Jahanapuri and he was there with his family and bring out. He wanted to go to be with what Lord Chaitanya. But every time if he tried to run off before his father had an.
Army.
And he would send his soldiers and capture him and him under guards. So he wasn't able. So that's why first he tried to escape and he got to Lord Chitan okay. Then even sent him back. No, don't run away from home. You can stay at home. But after one year going through all this almost he got, you know, whipped to death by this crazy Chaudhary. Then somehow had to use all his imagination how to get out of this difficulty. Then he became more determined. I have to go to Lordship. This is a waste of time. I have to solve all my uncle's problems. What is the devotional service. So then he started running away. Became almost a daily affair. He tried to escape but they'd always find him. So then the mother said, our son has become mad. She said, just keep him by binding him with ropes. His father, being very unhappy replied to her as follows. Narita name. Our son has opulences like Indra the heavenly king. And his wife is as beautiful as an angel. Yet all this could not tie down his mind. How then can we keep the boy home? By biting him with ropes. It is not possible even for one's father to nullify the reaction of one's past activities.
On him.
Who can keep home such a madman of Chaitanya each other? So then Raghava Pandan he went to get some idea in his mind. He went to Panihati.
There.
He obtained an interview with Chilanda. Was sitting in the Ganges under the banyan tree. Accompanied by associates, Kirtan singers, servants and many other distinguished personalities. He was sitting on a rock by the side of the Ganges. That rock is so. And Lord Mithyananda was a paltry millions of sons. Hundreds and thousands of rising suns. Everyone sitting around him. Seeing that opulence and Raghava pundit. He became overwhelmed. At a distance he offered his prostrated obeisances. The one servant hangs out there.
7. At that.
Hearing this Lord spoke to him. You are a thief. Now you have come to see me. Come here.
Come here.
Today I shall punish you. Everywhere he goes, he gets punished. Richard's family. Everybody goes to Nityananda Punishment.
Of course.
This will see. It's a different kind of punishment. The Lord called him a Raghur. Matthew J. Just jump up and run there.
Here I am.
Punish me. Just stay lying down. Playing on his obesity. So Lord went there and forcibly he put his flawless feet on his head. How many would like burgundy.
And.
God you can honor by nature. He is right, funny and merciful. So being very merciful, he spoke to Radas. Did you dislike a thief? Where instead of coming near you stay far away at a distant place. Though I have captured you, I shall punish you. Make a festival. Feed all my associates yogurt and chip dries. Hearing this, Raghu Madas was greatly pleased. He liked his punishment. By the way, we're giving everyone a chance to also share in this punishment. You can also be the words of our sponsors. This wasn't the end of day.
It's spontaneous.
We can sponsor pots from small to.
Big.
And share the mercy of feeling. Actually there's a pastime like that in the Tirupatji temple. Lord Vishnu has to borrow money from Kawer to marry Padmavati. Because he came down from the spiritual world just as a simple rabbin. And he had no money. So when it came time to marry, he said, where's the dowry? So then he called me some money.
I'll pay you.
He's a treasurer of the Devas. So since supreme Lord was there, he owed me some money. So now they have that. That's the richest temple India. Everyone goes to help the Lord pay back his debt. So they put donation in the donation box. And he has to pay back every year that his interest for the debt. After so many million years, the interest has come up. So here you also get a chance to help a reverend advance sponsoring a box. How much each Follow. I'll tell you later, but I think it starts from $11 and goes up to 239. He is arranged so open the possibility for everyone to participate according to your capacity. Surah Das. Of course, he didn't have any financial problem.
But.
This is Lupamihati.
So.
All these people have bought all the yogurt, sweet meats, bananas, sugar, all kinds of vegetable. I mean fruits, whatever fruits are available this season. And here you get mangoes, lychees, bananas. Not really jackfruit yet. It's kind of early. But you get coconuts, papaya. Yeah, jam, jam, kalo jam. I don't give birth.
You don't get in America.
But I don't know if it fits mixed with yogurt. So those are the main events. But you get a lot of different varieties of. So whatever was available, he got it. So that's what we do here. Whatever food's available, we get it. And we make a traditional mix that was the like Raghavan Dasas type. And then we make some new mixes and different. We'll be preparing for their lord's lordships. So you got hundreds, two or four hundred large round earthen pots and seven especially large pots. These are human size, six feet tall for a mixing. In other words, he was. That he meant business. He was gonna. Because, you know, you thought Lord Chananda had a lot of friends. Once the word that a feast was on his friends multiplied. In fact, everybody became his very close friends. Thousands of people. The word spread like wildfire that there's a picnic going on and it's an open invitation and everybody showed up to share the fun. So they soaked cheap rice, condensed milk and hot milk. And then half was mixed with yogurt. So some was. So we do that also instead condensed milk and add milk and some yogurt.
Preps.
Different things.
I went to the banana Research center where they are researching on all the varieties of the bananas and creating new varieties and things like that. So then I met this banana pundit. He was Banana Vit. You know everything about the banana them.
Yeah.
So he was telling me the glories of this particular expansion here that they mixed chapel for that. He was saying how this Chapa Cola said in the entire world it is the sweetest banana, but it also has the highest percentage of vitamin C. So if it's not completely ripe, then it'll taste sour. That's about citric acid, a vitamin C. It has to be made completely ripe then and actually actually has very high sugar, but it also has very high vitamin C. Like that is one of my. So many varieties of bananas. There's the butter banana. There's a special banana that tastes like strawberries. We can imagine. Especially here they give the best banana to mention this top mako. And they mix some camphor with it. Can we get medicine on camphor? Well, this type of bird is not conditional from pharma. So then they list. Make a long story short here, all of Nicholanda's associates who sit around him. Ram Das Tadahar Das Morali, Kamalakat Garam Jam Das was the one who arranged the marriage of Lord 1500 Udar. Dr. Thakur Prabhupada was descended Abu Dhar, Datta Takur. But he never stressed that because he didn't want to make an hereditary thing. He stressed his discipline connection, not his government connection. But actually he's a direct descendant from one of Washingtonian associates.
So there's so many people sitting up.
On this raised platform and all kinds of verdant scholars, Brahmanas, pundits and priests. They also came, they were honored and given a VIP seat. Everyone's given two pots. This means you all should take two. At least two sa cheap rice, condensed and yogurt. Everyone was sitting around in a platter form, even the two different pots. So the amazing thing happened was they put a seat out for Lord Chaitanya Nithyananda, he brought Lord Chitanya there by his meditation. When everyone thousand people out sitting there and sharing and eating their picnic.
There were two cups, one with the.
Milk and one with the yogurt. Then they started walking through the crowd. And Lord Nanda, he. Everyone was just chanting Andre just. He was in the mood of a coward boy. That was his accident with Pishta. He was to be Balaran and Pishta. Lila and I used to go as a forest with the coward box boys and then have picnics. He was in that wood remembering his previous pastime when he was here 5,000 years ago. And so he accepted all these people that are just like his cowherd friends. So cow herd boys, little boys, they don't follow all the rules and regulations. They eat from each other's plates. They steal each other's meat. So he was in that mood. He took from some of the people's pots and he put it in verdant's mouth. Chaitanya was there but he was invisible to everyone. So he taken the prasad and put in his mouth. It disappeared. Would take sun, fill up heart and come to. So that people didn't know exactly what's going on. Everyone was so happy. Nobody cared when they were seeing all these things. At that time, Agua Parlay came with a whole plate of lunch and said here, I got your lunch for you. You can have such a good lunch. He said, I'll take in the evening some lunch. But right now I want to just take a picnic. I'm here with my friends. We're having a picnic. We're going to have lunch. Later we'll have dinner. I'll take dinner and all that tonight.
I belong to a community of cowherd boys.
And therefore I generally have many cowherd associates with me. I'm happy when we eat together in a picnic like this. By the sandy bank of the river. You sit down, you take two, give him two baths.
So.
So many people were coming. Everybody was in this mood of pulling a mocha. Krishnan Balaram taking the son left. That's why it's also part of the. As you take prasad out of there, it's not raining out of the yarns. So much ecstatic love and remembering Krishna. You see, actually Lord Chaitanya teaching us. We may not be have had that fortune today to be able to be with Krishna in his pastime. But we have to remember those times. And if we relive them then we can also. Because spiritually remembering the Lord's pastimes and being with the Lord isn't different. Just like in many religions, we'll remember different pastimes of the Lord, his devotees. Christmas time it's quite often to see the ninja and every anything people remembering. And I get some emotions from that, some spiritual. So like that this is actually our system, a bhakti system through drama, through festivals, through remembrance. Remember the Lord's pastimes. And this gives us a spiritual very deep connection with the Lord. And emotional, spiritual path, ecstatic platform. Our consciousness actually relives those things to some extent to our capacity. The emotions that the devotees were feeling. There we are there. Isn't that one kind of some TV show? You are there, you are there. It's like that you are there. And then even in a spiritual sense that whole environment is created. We may not be able to see it. Just like the people couldn't see Lo Chaitani, but he was there. So we want to create that Panihati Nithyananda Goranga and all the associates are all here. So we do that through our service, through our memory. Those who want. This is Anton chapter six, second value during the day. Anytime today, tomorrow, if you have any spare time, you can come and look and see some of these pastimes. But one way it says the whole time the sound that filled the universe was the name of the Lord. Everyone was chanting. Some of Lord Nitinanda's associates actually are original Calvary boys from Krishnamira that have also come back into this world to help Lord Nitinanda. So they were like Ram Das Abhiram. He never even left. Actually another story. But Nidhikaram, Ram Das, they actually were so ecstatic this past time because overwhelmed. Many people just came, you know, they heard, they came to look what's happening. But they also said people that came to sell their goods, they are told after they sold all their clay pots and fruits and things, they said, you sit down, you also take. So then they curious people apart from all the serious people, so many people, they're all given facade. Even I didn't. Everybody has to take some, just a few muscles. So many people came that it filled.
Up the.
Banks of the river. And some people had no place to stand. They had to go into the river up to their waist. We always said that this field across the road was the very peak. It reminded us kind of on the river. Now we are there on the bank of the river with the festival. So this is very famous festival still goes on in India this weekend. It's the same weekend this time today actually. And they go and they thousands. I mean really about 200, about 100,000 of these people show up for that. There's no advertising, but I think we should do advertising. But there's no advertising. It's just by word of mouth. It's pecan has been that way for 500 years that everybody knows. And ISKCON distributes a Prada there to at least 50,000 people. But everyone, this is the thing. Whoever gets a pot, whoever mixes they all before eating, they all give out something to everybody. So it's kind of everybody is giving and everybody is receiving. A Sir Binati by the Veena in the proverb said our Iskrahant movement is actually for sharing our loving relationships with the devotees. Giving Prasad receiving Prasad giving gifts, receiving gifts, sharing our inquiring about spiritual subject matter and hearing about Ka's devotees and the answers to our primary advanced devotees. So this kind of sharing and loving, loving exchange the budseen in The Parihati festival. We hope that this testimony will be filled with loving exchanges amongst the devotees. And everyone returning that mood is still there even today. I used to go every year to old Pani happy. Until I got connected with new Pani happy. That's when I first I came here. I said, you know they have a Pani happy festival. You're a Pani happy. And then we got. We didn't really know what it was like. So since I've been so many years old money then we had a collaboration. So now I come here every year after the feast. There was also a lot of Kirtan and Nama dance. And I used to sing. And everybody was overwhelmed with this beautiful dancing and so many other things happening. Brother Nagas eventually got to see Lord Nityananda. And he can fight him in his trouble. I really wanted to say. I don't have any questions. Qualification. I'm just like a dwarf type to catch the moon. I'm not qualified to deal with Lord Chakra. But I really want to join him and to learn about Ka consciousness from him. And not just sit in my house and deal all these business things. So Lord Nityananda said that all the obstacles of the world cannot be able to to reach for Chaitanya and become the assistant of his private secretary. Actually rather than last he came assistant saloon. We talked in the beginning that Suroke Ramada was the most confidential person who helped relieve watch from his loving sentiments that were something in him. He's so intense it was unbearable. So he would relieve that by singing songs and to know the mood of work. So Raghavatask gave his confidence. So he got such a very special mercy because of this festival. It's the turning point the mercy of Lord Vijayananda. So we hope all of you, whatever obstacles you face in your spiritual life. Whatever spiritual aspirations and desires you have to fulfill. It may be different for different people. Mostly in the modern world. To join Lord Chaitanya was a big step forward. But for some people it is to be properly situated in your Ashram would be a big step forward. So it depends on different people, different situations they're in. But whatever it is, whatever would be the ideal next step for your master. Progress. Praying that the Lord to eternity will bless you to all be able to achieve your desired and Krishna conscious situation. That's appropriate. So this is the background of this festival. It's sometimes called the Darna Mahotsa Tadna means the punishment. And this was meted out as a punishment. We had to do this punishment, take this punishment of killing my.
Friends.
Actually, because the Ramanath gods, if you want to get a Krishna, you have.
To go through Guru.
It's important that you surrender to Guru to serve Guru. You can't go from a Diksha Guru. Sikshak. Of course Ramadas had a diksha Guru. But Nichinanda was the Shiksha Guru. Everyone there because he was the Lord himself. He was in charge of Bengal Kitchen. So if you want to get to Lord Chittan, you had to go to Nanda to say if you want to get to Krishna to go to Guru. So rather than that, guys, he had right there the Sikhsh Guru that he could have given him everything. But he didn't know anything. No Krishnanda. Instead he was just running away and trying by his own mind. But all he needs is a little mercy and he can do it and understand. He went for the mercy, realizing that by his own endeavor it wasn't working. Get the mercy of him, do not die. So that was the punishment was actually just deployed to give him the mercy. You do so much devotional service that all these obstacles you won't. You can achieve what you can.
It Ram it Ram sa. Ram sa. Go Japan and Samiya Jesus it Sam Krishnam a Guru.
Someone is looking for the truth deep inside. When a person is right for the truth and they are brought in contact with one of my spiritual masters and the devotees. So then that awakens in them a mature understanding about what they should do in their life. But gradually it's not when it takes something. So then the Guru is guiding the devotee and they gradually get over their material conditioning period of time. And then eventually they develop their devotion and their love for Krishna. Then they return back to Ka. So it's by mercy of Ka he leads one to Guru. By mercy of Guru, he leads one back to Ka. So there's a cooperation between Guru and Krishna to deliver the soul. Krishna is always in the heart of the devotee. So he's giving.
Guidance from within.
He's called the Chaitya Guru or the spiritual master in one's conscience or everyone's consciousness. Chaise Ya Guru internal spiritual master. Sometimes it's hard to know is Ka speaking or is it my mind? That's why we need to confirm with the initiating and Sikhsha Guru from outside to clarify what we should do.
What we should do.
If we have some idea, the disciples like to have it confirm what they should do. So this is our system. 16 Malas.
Every day.
Clearly, without avoiding the offenses, fulfill Prabhupada's mission. The personality of the Holy Name. Okay, for the how to offer the oblations with the grains.
Mix it.
But make sure you place it on.
