2002 || Ratha Yātrā and Class || Mathurādeśa #JayapatakaSwamiArchives

Jaya Pataka Swami discusses Krishna consciousness through Ratha-yātrā, the chariot festival at Jagannāth Purī, and how householders can practice devotion while fulfilling ordinary duties. He contrasts animal and human life, explains regulated practices like chanting and prasādam, and describes pilgrimage sites where bathing during eclipses accrues spiritual merit.

Just stop it for here the lecture. Then you can do it later.
Without.
In the matter of answers, by signing the way. How many want the welfare of the members of your family? Over there, ladies with the flowers. How many want welfare of your family? Very good. You also want welfare of the members of your family. We say that in order to do.
That.
You should conduct a moral religious life. So Brahma, he was concerned about all the living entities in the universe. Therefore he began to perform negative principles. In the modern world, there is a strange contradiction. If any leader in a high government.
Position.
Is caught stealing, if he is caught having illicit relations has given us directly, that is religion. I cannot make a religion. You cannot make a religion. Some other person may not make religion. Only religion is made when it's revealed by God. Prabhupada explains here an unrestricted life of sense gratification is animal life. Animals, they don't have any restriction. They can do whatever they like. But human beings are restricted, just like cats and dogs. Do they have marriage? Do they get married? Do they have any ceremony, any homa? Changing garlands, first time in the street, that's animal life. But human life means to follow religious principle. So in human existence we have marriage where husband and wife take vows to practice the household life, to support each other. In all parts of the human society, there are some systems of marriage. So human life is a regulated life. For animal life, they're regulated by their nature. Actually the animals, they naturally don't eat more than they should. You very rarely see fat animals. But human beings, we have to be regulated by certain norms. So we avoid. Fisherman catches the fish as the fish likes to taste. So when the fish sees the worm, what is the worm doing hanging in the water? They could use their intelligence, but no, they see a worm. I love yum yum yum worm. And they go and bite it and they get caught on the hook. Actually, fish are used to eating worms and rotten things in the bottom of the ocean or lakes of animals floating in the water. So they very lusty to eat anything, covered it with bamboo. And the big elephant falls inside the pit and is captured because of his desire to touch. So like that, each animal has got one sense which is very strong. But human beings, all of their senses are very active. So all the senses are pulling. It's like a man coming home and he has six wives and each is pulling. Come with me, come with me. Come with me. I want to make you happy. The five senses and the mind they're all pulling. The other one follows Yukta vairagya, Yukta Voairagya means that we do everything for ka. So eating prasadam is following regular principle. It's not so difficult to start. It's very tasty, pretty satisfying. But because we are selected, we are not eating things in the mode of ignorance. We're eating a prasada. They have to use a sense of seeing, touching.
Also.
The ladies are making the flower garlands in the back which are going to be open. It's come all the way here for your sense of hearing. And inside it you have a sense of tasting, hearing, smelling, seeing. Meditation will be okay. But if you are Vihasan, householder or student. If you're active person who has to work for a living, has to take care of children then for you you should do active yoga. How many here are active people? Anybody here active person? Discuss about ignorance. Maha means everyone. So what is everyone about ignorant? That's the festival. Now we have various festivals that bring everybody in here. But festival like Van Kantha, like everyone out in the west. People have festival like a beer party or something. And they all get drunk. They're lying on the street constituted. That is time itself. That is obviously everyone ignorance. So now people are thinking that ignorance is happiness. Ignorance is bliss. But that's not the truth. Maybe temporarily they're getting some happiness. But their life is worse for them. What is good sabas transcendental festivals do is uplift our taxes. Listen us a big boost in Terence. You're directly doing a sa for the Lord. By directly bringing a service to the Lord, you're accruing, you're gaining su special Krishna credits. Now there are many schemes and ask God for to possibly money in the bank. They have by making all these arrangements. So that's a special blessing everyone's getting when we use our senses with Krishna. Krishna puts it down in his book deposit book. They're doing Saya for me. I'm going to take care of him. Prabhupada explained how Kisha his duty is to care for his devotees. He said then the Lord he that is my duty to protect my devotees. So this person considers himself herself my devotee so that they protect him or her. So we are better off very much. He was requested by his mother to stay in Jagannath Puri. And although the form of Jagannath is a deep nor eye is very special. But when sister Tanya Mahabhu saw this form of Jagannath, he went, you could do it he doing the Radhakra on Friday. Fifteen days before Thursday night maybe. Anyway, it's a Great special session. 14 days you can do that. Everyone comes and takes journey. It's not a big bathing ceremony. It's a very wonderful festival. Big gift dance. People are bathing the Lord. Then the Lord catches cold because everyone brings in so much Abhishek for 15 days on concealable work.
It's.
The service of Jahir is being there. And Islam. There's also the birthplace of Shakir Sudan Saraswati who also was born in Jagannath Puri. Then there's the palace of the King of Puri which also the great king was also going to that place. And of course the palace is bending. The place is there like this. There's also another ashram of this camp on the other side which I put in the gates which is followed by the Nafta Ashram. So when you go to the Penang outside there's the Sakshi Gopal on one side. On the other side is the other. So like this there are many places to see when you go to Jagannath Puri. When we go to these places, we pray with the deities for blessings. And we can make here the bodies of Krishna.
Record comes and then it will start recording.
Sam.
Is a ceremony, a festival which is commemorating the journey of Krishna and Balaram and Subhadra from Dwaraka to Kurukshetra on the occasion of a solar eclipse. Kurukshetra is a Dharmakshetra and a Jurakshetra boat. But this time they are going not.
For Julaka but for Dharma.
And thousands and hundreds of thousands and.
Maybe millions of people were going there on that occasion.
There's a very beautiful, very large Saroba lake that must be more than a kilometer long. It's very long and very wide. Actually you can see how it can accommodate a million people bathing at one time.
It's possible.
So Krishna personally went and bathed there along with all of the Bhangravas and other devotees during the solar eclipse.
It was a holy place to bathe.
At that time. Because from Kurukshetra very eager to attend if it's at all possible. Since this is the only indoor Rakyatra in the world that I know of. A very special occasion. Although we keep everything to respect the local situation in here. Remind that enthusiasm is not a long emperor. What we have to do is imagine that such an important service it is for the Lord. If you didn't stand and watch Tirak, you get elevated to the Highest position and if you can sing and dance with the rat is going you get so many blessings you cannot even begin to explain it. So this is a very great opportunity.
For all of you.
We hope that you have to wait. You have to each take our turn in batches and waiting.
Party.
We will press his obi wall and take the rasa over the other trouble. We request them to go out of the rata area.
And also Ram it Ra Nam Sam Sa Sam Sa Sam I shall present myself and bless the Lord to accept the entire kingdom as his very own. Then Avanti Pura will actually shine. Must I delight in spending aroma of prisi and have a look at your lotus teeth. I feel sudden that this one act of mine is far greater than all the Vedic studies and sacrifices of I have pursued for an entire lifetime. Surely your personal presence on this sacred mountain, your eternal abode has reflected every living in the world and entanglement It Sam I repeat Ram Ram it highest degree of love see me as Shyam Sunera, the original personality of Lori Soldier Blue. Still if you prefer to worship me in opulence, you may ornament me with hands and feet made of gold and silver. But you should know that I am already the honor of all honorable.
George Harrison. He was one of our friends who passed away last this of me because when he was R&RO star starting out that when he got rich and famous and nothing happened, that was the goal in life. But then he realized when he became rich and famous that that wasn't it. That's not what he was looking for. So then he began to to go to India to look for God. There are many people in the west who have responsibilities because of that. Many people are afraid oh that if you think of studying these things, duties build up your family responsibilities build up your activities in society. In some places this is confusion. Actually Krishna is saying here that we shouldn't give up our normal duties, we shouldn't give up our work. We should give up or change the reason why we do the work. When we do it, instead of doing it for a material purpose, we should do it for Krishna. When we do our work for Krishna, then it becomes spiritual. That even though we're rotating material world just like anybody else, but our existence becomes spiritualized and purified. And that way there's a difference. Of course it doesn't mean that once one decides, okay, from now on I'm going to be a servant of Krishna. I'll do my work for Krishna that their crazy boss at work won't suddenly become not crazy that the work colleague will bring funny things on. The next guest will suddenly stop doing funny things. The whole environment you internalize, you start to see things differently. All these people are working under the seymour from a donation. Somebody is in the world of goodness, somebody's compassion, somebody is in ignorance, someone's different nature. If passion is red and goodness is yellow and ignorance is blue, you initially see colors and how many combinations can you get? Then they have in their computer how many 16 million combinations. And it still just a fraction of the possibilities. So different people have different combinations of these modes of nature. And they actually according to how they're conditioned. We've also been conditioned according to our country, our city, our family, our school, our workhouses, our friends also condition. So when somebody starts to awaken, then the reasons why they used to do.
Things.
Also they strive to change. Before I was doing something, it has one purpose. Now in Krishna tends to do the same thing, but for a different purpose. Before maybe I was having children because I just wanted to enjoy our family. But now that I have children, I love them, I want to see them. They can go back to life.
And.
Then they can go back to driving. They don't have to take birth again in a machine. What they do in some places is they put a closed circuit TV in the next room and they have TV there. So then ladies that have babies, that are too young to sit by.
They.
Can create a class and watch it. All these are doing whatever they have to do. They don't get deprived of the class. They did that in the bar. In the beginning, Krishna told Arjuna, you don't start fighting, but you start.
Instead.
Of fighting for winning or losing, because I do any damn depression. If I fight and I win, I'm going to end up killing all my brothers, dozen brothers. I have to kill my guru, I have to kill my grandfather and kill all these people. They're all lined up, so what's the use of I'm going to kill all these people and that's to be the winner. What's the use of winning because you kill all the people you love. Then on the other hand was worse, so better not complain situation. In this point of view it was lose, lose, fighting, lose. So then it's a big contribution. And in the modern world, many people fall into this kind of depression and they try to well, whatever I do, I'm going to lose, so why should I do it in the modern world, in the west, they say that about 20 or 40% people are going through depression. 20% is like a minimum 1 out of 5%. So it's quite a common thing. Now somebody's Krishna conscious, they shouldn't go into that kind of recession because.
We'Re.
Not doing things for the same reason. We don't evaluate results in the same way. So once Arjuna changed his perspective when he was fighting for Krishna. Whether you want or lose, it was Krishna's problem. His duty was to serve Krishna and leave out the results to Ka, that he nearly became peaceful, that he was doing everything as a sacrifice. This is what we're training. He wants to follow the footsteps of Arjuna. It's not easy to read the Bhagavad Gita is at the end of the day we not learn the same things that Arjuna learned. Arjuna read the Bhagavad Gita and he became perfect. We want to read the Bible, as he said, also become perfect. Probably any of you in your life, you ever go through some kind of depression at some point? Unhappiness in your life? Ever experience anyone experience unhappiness? Seriously? A comment please. So why not be honest alone? What's the problem? What do you have to lose? Let me done this.
So because.
We are in this material world, naturally there is sometimes happiness and sometimes distress. See those have something within that.
Just.
Like the summer and winter are coming out. Winter season, it's a nice cool degrees, quite pleasant weather outside compared to the summer season where it becomes very hot and dry. So sometimes some places, like if you're in Russia or Canada or 30 degrees, sometimes minus 40 degrees. I went to the Siberia and there was just the fall, so the daytime was about 18 degrees and the night was the night about 3 degrees. That was considered to be mental. And they told me that if you come in the winter it's minus 50, very lack of hospital, such an environment they're living in. So different places, the environments are different, different extremists. Our point is that how we see the things. If we realize that we are inactive body with a spirit soul and the body is a biological machine and we can use this body, whatever we do, we're racking up karmas. It's not possible to roughly chance that so gradually sort of record. For some people, there's so much to know about Ka that they can immediately change. But for most people it's a gradual process. So they engage themselves in Ka service following some regular program, chanting some japa every day, offering the food to be sun. There is an IP in their house. During the life of Gita, bring some raki misha. And I'm not seeing Krishna service. They meet this Krishna service that they are doing akarma. They're doing devotional service and doing all that activities as a sacrifice themselves. They're getting free from the mothers.
Once.
They take shelter of Krishna and they take initiation from bona fide Christianity. When they fully surrender to Krishna, then they are unhooked from the wheel of karmas. Even before initiation. As soon as we. I mean holy surrender doesn't mean I give up my material activities. Don't get confused with that. It means I give up why I do that. And now I do everything for Krishna. Just like somebody is working in a company, they expect that while you're working there, you work for the interest of the company. Of course, since it's in a business arrangement, it's not out of love. Therefore many employees tend to cheat a little bit or tend to goof off or not work. The more responsible ones are supposed to be the officers. They're supposed to see everybody's working up to their capacity. But while you're in the is most welfare of business or a business with some profit and they pay in your salary. So working for Krishna, we're doing it out of love. We're not doing it because we want to get some this good. We're doing it because we know that it's our duty to do that. You're a part of Krishna. Krishna, you're a part of God. It's our name to serve him. When we serve Krishna because it's our religious sermon, then he's also as his duty to protect his devotees. So that's my duty to protect my devotees. And I will also protect his transgressionitis. He sees his devotee when we serve this shot out of a sense of duty. We have faith in the works of the man with each other. The Bible then we're considered to be a wonderful time for interviewing the Lord. Even we have few doubts. But we know we can get those vows answered by talking to the spiritual masses. The beginning, when someone's just ready doing yog fighting, they're not so sure about what they want to do. They basically consider themselves in the bomi of Krishna because they have all kinds of pushed up ideas. Sometimes they're very strong in their faith, sometimes they're well be. Some people say, why did you follow scripture at all? You should just do things based on your own experience. Anyone who follows the scripture, this is somehow scriptures also written by men, you shouldn't believe that you believe in themselves. And try to search our answers. Of course, the Vedas explains that we have got four kinds of defects. We have imperfect senses. These imperfect senses don't give us the accurate position of what we're seeing. We tend to realize a distorted image of what is happening. Just like with some people living and some aboriginals living, that according to what we perceive, we come up with some conclusions reality. Even now with modern science and expansion of our self perception to microscopes, telescopes, to learn this class of instruments. Still we are only able to grasp the relative range of phenomena. That's why now modern scientists and physicists have this by the quantum mechanics. Because the quantum particles don't act anymore. According to classical physical revolution was prominent. There were many findings of fossil records. Once they had bowing theory. Then things will have to evolve. That meant that going to evolve to where we have to be. So when we started playing bones that were from other millions of years ago, they would just say what must be a mistake because it doesn't fit in their teeth. Actually it's not so pretty documented, but basically it could be researched. As far as we can understand that human beings really came here from another planet. And we come here as descendants of Hanu. So we're not evolved here, but we are calling center here. And we've been here for a long time. But not that we are bought from the monkeys or anything. So that's why we're called mankind, because we're coming from Hungary. Somehow we came from there. So to signal across the possibility of even contemplated by the senses. People like that many times they want to think about this belief what we can perceive. But that gives a very limited result. So there were people who thought like this in the ancient past. And the first person to think like that was Lord Gomer. He was booking when he was born. Who am I? Who am I?
Where am I? Where am I? And he was there, sitting alone on the lotus flower. And he's crawling down the lotus looking where is my origin?
But he crawled and went down so far that he couldn't find anything. He is so small compared to the host. He went back and was sitting on top of the lotus, wondering what am I supposed to do? Here I am all alone. Can you imagine if you are born an orphan? That seems like an orphan. You don't know, you're not actually orphan. You don't see a mother, you don't see your father, you don't see anybody. You are completely alone. That was how Brahma appeared alone. I'm a lotus flower, a gigantic lotus flower. Bigger than the planet. So then he was thinking what should I do? And the two sounds came from the sky Papa to austerity. Then he started to meditate do our skills again. Krishna played his flute and the sound of the flute entered into his ears and he got enlightenment. He got the enlightenment and he realized what is that material world? What is that spiritual world? Who is Krishna? Who is there I in the and everything then was very clear to him. Then he's saying prayers to Krishna that's one of those prayers is the Brahma Samhita we sing some of those prayers. So then after realizing the truth then he handed this truth down to Narad Mumi and gave famous teachings to Narad Narad taught this to Vyasade and many others. Narad has found a disciples Vyasa was one of the recent disciples. Vyasa decided to write down all these realizations in the book club.
Now the.
And they will be sincerely marrying the whole damage and no necessities and they will be taken the role of serving the group. They will time actually to combine their own and they completely serve him as an they will very happily involve the devotional service of the congregation and do very rigorous preaching to improve the congregation activities. Jamming Namachari Bhattaya Remedy by Raj Ram now this for the this candidate is.
