2002 || Ratha Yātrā and Upadeśamṛta Class || Atlanta, USA #JayapatakaSwamiArchives

Recorded YouTube video (Jaya Pataka Swami) of a Ratha Yātrā festival event and Upadeśamṛta class in Atlanta. The clip includes: reading of a mayoral proclamation (Mayor Shirley Franklin declaring June 21, 2002 Festival of Chariots Day), opening festival chants, and a class/discourse by Jaya Pataka Swami covering Krishna-conscious practices — chanting, association with devotees, the six types of loving exchange (giving/accepting gifts, prasāda, counseling, honoring, revealing feelings, etc.), temple service (cleaning, cooking), initiation/qualification issues for devotees, youth association, and using cultural media (movies, scriptures) for education. The recording features Q&A from attendees and practical examples from Chaitanya-charitamrita and Gaudiya pastimes.
Sa. It's Ram. Sam. It's Sam. Sami Nayana Baba. Sam. Rashna Ma. Sam. It. It's Sam. Ram. It's Sam.
So the proclamation from Mayor Shirley Franklin is being read by Clara McLovain and she's the director of External Affairs, External affairs for the mayor's office. So let's welcome her with a round of applause.
Thank you very much. On behalf of Mayor Shirley Franklin, I'd like to agree this proclamation for the festival of Cherry.
Today.
Whereas Raja Yasha is bringing Krishna back home to Vrindava and is celebrated in the Ramayata festival held in the state of Orissa. And whereas on the auspicious day of the festival, three sumptuously decorated chariots holding the three deities are swans in the streets of Puri by thousands of devotees from all over India and many parts of the world. And where is Sheila? First introduce the Rapi Yaga festival. For the last 35 years, Faithful dedicated perform the Ratha Yatra festival in dozens of cities around the world each year. And whereas the city of Atlanta is pleased to honor Lord Jagannath, Lord Balaram and Subhadra Deva in an extremely exciting celebration of its own Rathada Festival. Now, therefore, I, Shirley Franklin, 58th mayor of Atlanta, and on behalf of the citizens of Atlanta, hereby proclaim June 21, 2002 as Festival of Chariots Day in our city.
Thank you.
Okay, Pune.
That's Ram Sam. Sa. Ram Sam. It. It's it. It. Nam. Sam Sa. Sam Sa Sam. Ra. Ra. Sat Sa Sabo. Honeyboat Ra. Sad Sa Sam Ra Ra Sam Ra.
Actually, we want to get quick results as possible. By the mercy of what she tell you. He is the most merciful he of ardentananda. So we take their mercy and chant. Then we can get very quickly the transcendental results. Still, we need patience. We may have to do some more Panchitutra chanting or praying. But sometimes maybe we're making some mistakes. We may have to take some counseling, some guidance in the spiritual master seeing the loan and kind of.
What is it?
Why that story of the wedding party that was ruining all night the fog. And in the morning they saw they were still on the same side of the river. They discovered they never pulled out the anchor. Someone might be practicing Krishna consciousness, but still got the anchor stuck in the ground. So they're not going anywhere. Tap that kind of a bar to not following the regular principles. You're not going to get the same results if you don't follow the regular principles. Chanting and rounds and following the four.
Principles.
Giving up associations of the non devotees. You see people, if the devotee has trouble, usually it's because they're associating with materialistic people. Let's go further and let's do this. Let's smoke or something. They're falling into some kind of Maya. Usually it's because they're associated with some people who are encouraging to do that. It makes it much harder to resist if you're associating with such people. If you're associating with devotees, they encourage you. Let's go to class. Let's have some prashana. Let's chant some nam. Let's go wash the pots, open the kitchen after the feast. I need help.
Right?
Yeah, right. Come on, Prabhu, let's do some ecstatic service. He's so fired up. He said, wow, okay, what is he. I'm going to take him into the kitchen cleaning the pot. Last night they announced about 10 times to get someone to clean the pots. But I saw this morning there were some devotees enthusiastic cleaning. So anyway, cooks, nobody did it beforehand. But actually Prabhupada, remember he used to say, cleaning the temple means cleaning your heart. Like the Gundicha, Marjana, chevradar marjana. So this actually there's list of all kinds of devotional activities actually in South India, Chennai temple, that's Madras. For those who know the Omni. They gave over the Sunday feast to the youth of the temple, all the college students and the young people, the devotees, children of the devotees and younger devotees, youth of the visiting. That was their project. So they'd all come together and they'd cut the vegetables. They had the seven devotee Brahmin would put the feast. But they would like do all the arrangements, she'd think. And here they see all these college kids cutting samjis, cutting vegetables. But they're having a great time talking with each other, cutting, you know, getting cleaning the temple, making the announcements, sending all the things, distributing. Because they're all doing it together and doing it for Krishna. Everyone was having a great time cleaning up afterwards. Do you believe it? But actually they all work because they were all doing it together for Krishna. Somehow they're having a really good time in that. I think they're still doing that. They went for years together. So it's not that you can only have fun playing basketball. Actually you can have fun playing anything if you're doing it for Krishna. This lady is having fun carrying the clay pots. Tomorrow we're gonna have lots of fun making an offering for Word Chitanya helping Radhuna mask or Swami. What could be more fun? So good association purges you to good.
Things it.
So we keep our faith in Krishna.
Then.
There'S a loving exchange between the offering gifts and charity. Accepting charitable gifts, rebuilding one's mind and confidence. Inquiring confidentially. Accepting prasad and offering prasad are the six symptoms of love shared by one devotee and another.
So.
Giving gifts and charity like garlands do something simple like a flower garland or a brown thread. Doesn't have to be a fancy card.
Could be.
You get drunk by the nice car with a big T. Lock in the three matching cars for Delhi Vrindavan and Delhi Mae and Miami. Janapavana, who was the mechanic for the Radha Namana party went over to India and after getting the cars, he put them in the workshop and remelded all the joints. He said that in the assembly line it only welded about 30% of the joints. Like just, you know, minimum needed to keep it from falling apart. But after a while it was falling apart. So he rewroteed everything and really, you know, double checked all the things and made it really good. So that it was a super mess. Not that so many good Christoph painted them all burgundy. So Ra. So then the Lord has offered description as to entirely give me small things, big things sometimes maybe offering a fruit or flour, a leaf and accepting that offering. Opening your mind, facing these problems and these doubts, whatever and getting that advice, inquiring what's the solution for this. So hearing the person you're giving some advice also like this, there's a kind of reciprocation. Then honoring facade and feeling is all about feeding, right? Offering gifts, feeding. And at the end Raghav Ladas he revealed his mind to Nithyananda who are facing these difficulties. I want to join Chesanthya Mahaprabhu but I'm not able to do it. Please tell me how I can achieve it all. Because of your service, your obstacles will be removed. So these you can see in the practical examples of Chaitanya Charita Mehta this kind of exchange. Anyone can say to some examples of these six loving exchanges from pastimes of Lord Chaitanya Krishna.
His.
Great people think alike. Why they reveal their minds of war the Lord and inquire from the Lord. Yes, yes.
Yes.
He gave sandal. He was very upset.
Yes.
And he cooks for the Lord. And the Lord wouldn't accept his cooking unless he would Prema Vivarta.
The.
Complicated loving exchange. But yes, all those exchanges are there. Krishna straight down gave a flat Rice to Krishna gave the flat rice to Krishna and he accept give Sudama palace. You had your chance, right? Anyone else raising him?
Yeah.
Krishna gave a little few grains of rice and my fruit members gave fruit. Then Christian gave jewels basket of jewels. My businessman would like the best. I cannot go that Lord Chaitanya gave to Hindu Rauna Tag Goswami his daughter. Lord Chaitanya gave it to Rauna Tako Swami. His daughter says too much for a sanyasi and it's not enough. I've been fasting for two days. Then he said why you're complaining? Is supposed to be a renounced order accepting whatever you get. So here in this Kanihatri festival of the Saha opportunity that people get sponsored path and they want to give.
Go.
Around and distribute flat rights to the devolis giving Prasad Jaiva. Since we need also to accept from the offering. It's a beautiful thing.
Here.
The life of the Krishna conscious society is nourished by these six types of loving exchange among the members. Therefore, people must be given the chance to associate with the devotees at this time. Because simply by reciprocating in the six ways mentioned above, an ordinary man can fully revive his dormant Krishna consciousness. Like Ravi ever like to just take from people. Always said if we give a donation, give them a book, give them Prasada, give them something. You don't want to just take them, you want to give them. One time someone offered a donation from us. Said I'll give you these books. He said, no, I don't want to take the donation. Said if you don't take the books, then I won't take the donation. So then finally I accepted the books. Maybe he read the books we came on.
The.
Prabhupada says the International Society for Krishna Consciousness has been established to facilitate these six kinds of loving exchanges between the bodies. The society was started single handedly because people are coming forward in healing the give and take policy that society is now expanding all over the world. We sometimes hold Hare Krishna festivals and invite life members and friends to participate in the feasting by accepting Prashad. Although most of our members come from higher runs of society, we nonetheless come and take whatever little Prashant we're able to offer. Sometimes they come inquire how to render devotional service. And we explain to them.
These are.
All living exchanges of his. Invite the society's members and supporters to bang with them when they hold love.
Feast.
And every Sunday it's like karma goes to you. Or maybe it's genuinely really think that somebody's sincere taking a little bit of a calculated risk. Sometimes it's better to give something.
So.
That they give something so it's their responsibility. Sometimes you get books of politicians, mayors. There is a limit for a devotee to desire mercy. Is there a limit to desire mercy? I don't know. Sometimes I feel like I want too much mercy. But I'm not giving enough for the silent mercy. So is that it's offensive to try to get so much mercy like from Guru or from Krishna without me giving? Just like Rabbi Nadas he presented himself. I want to join Chaitani Mahabhu. Even though I know I am not qualified. I feel like a dwarf who wants to moon. But what can I do? I still want to meet. I want to join him. I feel like that I can't answer and repeat presented to the Lord Shaitanya humbly. I know I want so much mercy. I want your love of Godhead. I want Krishna Prema. I want pure devotion. But I know I'm not really qualified for that. I'm still open hope I like it. There's a prayer like that problem. I mean, we want to be Krishna when I qualify Because I'm asking you because you're all merciful as your petite Pavan deliver the most fallen. No, I am totally unqualified to deliver the mercy. But I'm still just begging you out of your cause is mercy. There's a way of veiling that. If you're genuine, you think yourself unqualified and still you are attracted to Lord's mercy. It's more of a disqualification when you think that okay, no, I'm qualified Krishna, give me Krishna. Because it's such a great thing you can't really put a face on. We should be proud. Even if we do this in basic st or do some service, we should also increase. Krishna knew that by doing anything it's only by mercy of doing your devotees Mercy of the Guru. We should somehow present ourselves as the most humble servitor of our Panchata. So that wound within desire. We're in a hopeless condition. All we can do is.
Excuse me.
For duty. These are.
In relationship to surrendering to Krishna that sometimes he was plagued. I'm plagued in my mind with regret or guilt feelings. In relationship to austerity and fight. It's very difficult to come to understand and appreciate the ability to overcome past mistakes. What should be one's mindset or concept as far as what's the best thing to do to become fixed in Christian consciousness in relationship to mistakes made in the past. I don't know if I'm clear over that or not.
Dependent mind to do the right thing in the future.
Praying for forgiveness, that type of mindset.
Not getting depressed by it or hopeless. Still hoping that the Lord will give mercy. Even though.
It'S important to associate with devotees and avoid the association of the non devotees. But sometimes there's so many people that is kind of in the middle like you say. But they are devotees because they chant or because they're doing some service. But normally they have the tendency not to engage in other activities more than devotional service. Festival and you go to the movies or something like that, you know, for example. So how. How to discern. You know, how to. You know, they are devotees. So you have the association. Each devotee has some nice qualities.
I associate with stronger devotees. Devotees are like minded or in terms of like like minded and Christian practices. They want also to advance the Krishna cast. Not like minded if they were higher. And when devotees are more advanced, you want to improve your association, improve your educational consciousness. At this time, devotees were not very.
Strict.
Friendly to them and polite. But you know rather so much intimately associate rather trying to associate with someone who's a little better than do a little more.
Because I have seen sometimes between the young people that they have been born in the moment. There is a smaller group that say, you know, I want to get initiated, I want to shun 16 rounds. I want to do service. And these are like little children, but so many others, the years go by, they never get initiated. They never reach to Shan 16 rounds. And we see that some people that wasn't born in Muna, they just come and yes. And immediately the chances around they take initiation and they keep on going. In Serbia south, it's difficult sometimes to talk. You know, the people that you are raising, you're taking care of your doctor also. Oh, this is the bodies and wants to. You should take initiation. Oh, I need that. It's like we'll do it. Sometimes they spend forever. So what? And some devotees, you know, they are young, don't bully the bodies. They take initiation and they're going. They make a lot of advancement.
Yeah. It seems Prabhupada was giving some local students initiation at the age of 12, 13. Some people don't like that. But it seems that before they enter into the teens, they get initiated. Sometimes it helps them get through the teenage years. Everyone's an individual. You can't force people to be Krishna conscious. They have to choose sometimes that association or senses or so many different things may be there different factors in it to be initiated. It says something very good. To be a Krishna consciousness devotee is running a great good fortune. To be born in the family of devotees is an opportunity to advance. Sometimes people take more time. Some men they take less. Some of these actors are there. Some people are very humble. They just want to wait. They don't feel that they're strict enough yet. Maybe if they take initiation like they become more strict, they become more strong. Different factors can't just put it into a stereotype. Some people they really haven't got faith in them as spiritual mastery. Another big topic.
My last question Sometimes I. I thought oh, you should give young people some some kind of sex gratification too. Because if you don't give them gratification like I always think like that. If you don't let them, let them watch some movies or do this or that then when they're free oh, then they will not process verification stuff. My question even for myself, you know I'm still attractive to watch movies. You know, I chat I guess the movies I like watching service. But I have this analysis. So how to get rid. How to. You know what you should do? You should give them some sense gratification. You should give yourself.
Well, that's why Michael Trimmer has made me avoid churning series and watch robot.
Movies.
Or sometimes maybe a Krishna conscious a mundane movie. But then they be able to be dovetailed and heard by that like took some disciples to see the Matrix and they had a Ishtagosti afterwards and discussed the implications of what it was. So something could be dovetailed like that occasion that some movie which may have some kind of subliminal message connectivity Krishna consciousness. Remember that Moses movie was very much like Yamadas and Vishnu Dutas. The movie will create the audio visual format to present a philosophy. Be nice if someone can convince.
Steven.
Spielberg to put on the mount bar. Seems like you take some of the plot lines from some of the Vedas and put some into Star Wars. The one with the little. What's the guy the prince and the little monkey guys little extraterrestrial animals. Looks like a plot from the.
Actually.
Find that the scriptures the past times are so much more amazing. Was reading some of these past times in the Padra Parad really amazing wars between the devas and demigods. I mean they haven't come up with anything like that. Some really amazing mystical things they do sometimes. So we can develop a taste for.
Reading.
The scriptures reading the past tense. It actually uses much more of our brain. Movies, television. We don't use as much of our intelligence. Kind of just watching. When you read something, you have to actually imagine it so it becomes much more within you so we can cultivate that.
Hearing.
I don't know that. Who's coordinating the candidates for the sho? There's been no interest in this. You want to have.
