Jaya Pataka Swami leads a spiritual discourse on devotional service, the power of the Holy Name, and deity worship. Multiple participants ask questions and share pastimes in this recorded seminar from May 2002.
Newcastle, that's. That's not sesame. That's what Christina has in a restaurant. I heard Mukesh. Some things may be very private, but like that, we can develop our relationship with Ka through the deity, through the Holy Name. Holy Name is another type of deity, the Nama avatar Holy name comes to us in sound. So the devotees, initially just philosophical, try to understand who they are and basic things. But then gradually, as they render devotional service, they start to develop, awaken their dormant relationship with Ka. Hearing about the pastimes of other great devotees is very purifying for us, helps instill our faith. And then in our own sadhana, we are relating with Ka already through the Holy Name, through the deities and through the spiritual master. Spiritual master is also considered a kind of an external manifestation of Ka's mercy. He's a devotee, he's not Ka himself like that. He's a devotee of Ka, but for the disciples is like a mailbox that they can offer their service to Krishna confirmed in different ways. We are developing our relationship with Krishna. So that's what's very special about devotional services. We're getting a direct contact.
Hands on.
It's not just the theory, but it's actually the realization. But how long it takes for people to get realizations or to get feelings. And whether we confirm things sometime with the guru, if this is a correct understanding and he confirms that this is like special circulation, or this is okay, this is a sign from Krishna. See Parikshit Mars. He saw Krishna when he was in the womb of his mother. He already saw Krishna. He's always looking for Krishna again. He said, you got to hear more and more about Krishna and his incarnations. Somehow we have to awaken that faith and that desire to always want to serve Ka and be with Ka so that can be awakened by deities, by pastimes, by shastra, by service, by festivals, by devotees, by the Guru, by holy name, by kirtans. So many different ways. So we absorb ourselves in this environment of Ka consciousness and try to awaken more and more our dormant love for Ka just by putting ourselves in the right place at the right time. Sometimes it happens by accident, almost sometimes we choose to be in the right place and it was the right time. We get the mercy. Parikshit Maharaj is asking questions he wants to hear because he knows hearing about the Ka is the one thing that awakens and it's directly connecting one with Ka when we're hearing about his glories. So if everybody takes the bandits to Me, one of the qualities yesterday was lolium. That is an obstacle for spiritual life. But that's material lowliam, material greed. But to be spiritually greedy, that's okay. If you're spiritually greedy, that's auspicious. Materially greedy is an obstacle. We want everyone to hope that they develop their spiritual desires. Some people just chant because it's like a duty. They're doing it. Sometimes the children, they chant because the parents say, you should chant. They'd rather do something else. But they're preached to, okay? So they do it. They have not yet developed that desire. When they actually develop that desire, it's, I want to be ka conscious. I want to see Krishna. I want to play with Krishna. I want to. When their desire, their greed to be with Krishna awakens, then that's very auspicious. So somehow the parents can inspire the children, the guru can inspire the disciples, the president, vice president can inspire the devotees to want to serve the Lord. That's the success. And then that desire can increase more and more. It's not like you can't limit. One person may have a little desire, and some may have a lot of desire. Sometimes material life. Somebody does more work than people think, you know, I'm doing all the work. Where's everybody else been? Spiritually, devotees are greedy to do more service. Jnananda Prabhu, Jayananda Prabhu. He was always so eager to do service, but he was eager to. He knew that Krishna was more pleased others were involved. So he would get everybody else involved as much as possible. But his service enthusiasm was contagious for everybody else. It snagged me. I just came to look at him building a Rothkar. And then I don't know what they were doing. They were all hammering on wood and things. He came over and said, you know how to hold the nail? I said, yeah, I can hold the nail. See? Hold it. Let me see if he can do it. So then, you know, tapped the nail. I hold the nail. He tapped it into the wood. Then I pulled my finger away. Once I was in the wood, and he said, oh, you're an expert. You pulled your finger away. You know exactly what to do. You know how to hammer, too? Well, I can hammer, sure. That's a big deal. So here, marked off six places on the wood. He just hammer nails in there. Hammer it in. He pat me in the back. You're great, you know, you're so wonderful. This is a. He showed me this picture of the chariot and Jagannath Puri with 10 million people there. I don't even know how to. One million maybe. And so we're going to build one of these.
Really?
That's an amazing thing. Yeah. We got six days to finish. It's just a wooden frame.
Nothing.
How is it possible? You need about. It must take a couple years to build this, you know. No, no, we're going to do it by Krishna's mercy. We need your help. Can you help? We're going to, you know, everyone who participates in this, they all get liberated from birth and death. And the whole city is going to get spiritualized by this. You can change the whole world by helping with this project. I forget all what he told me, but it was very convincing. He was a real nice person, so wanted to be with such a person, so positive and enthusiastic.
And.
I wanted to know something about Krishna. So he was like. While we were hammering and sawing, he was telling about Prabhupada and about Krishna. So his desire to please Guru and Krishna was so contentious. After seven days of working with him, I decided to surrender and try it myself fully. So this moment's association with great devotees, very inspirational. Hare Ka. Hare Ka. Krishna Krishna. Hare Hari. Hari Ram. Hari Ram. Ram Ram. Any questions? Manibanda Prabhu.
They got two pieces of paper. Two pieces of paper. Yes and no. The answer was yes on that basis. If I make it, I'm just wondering how bona fide is that sort of decision making process.
Is it mentioned as shastra? I don't know whether Prabhupada ordered that all managerial decisions should be made by doing that process. We wouldn't have to just take a lot of time. We wouldn't need GBC meetings. There are such systems. I mean, in some temples they have what they call prasma asking Aditi a question. But there's some system for how to do that. So there are some temples which they have Brahmanas who are experts at this art of prasna. Some things Prabhupada said was more like gambling. It wasn't really bona fide. But there is such a system. Every the guru, Vayu or deity, every six months they change their head Pujari. They have maybe hundreds of Pujaris who are potentially qualified to be the head Pujari. I don't know how many. Put their name in the basket. Put their name in the basket. That they're willing. Because you become head Pujari for six months, you just have to live there in the ashram, be totally celibate. You won't see Your family for six months, somebody dies in your family, they won't tell you because otherwise you'd be considered a suchi. So you'll be totally out of contact for six months, more or less. But during that time then you get to do all the dirty worship. And it's very special. So one of my disciples, uncle had pujari like 13 times. They put their names in a basket. Used to be before they had this elephant case of the elephant used to pick out a name from the basket. Whoever name pick out, that would be the hen puja. But now they don't have an elephant so expert. So they have a little child come in front of the deities and pick out. So there are different customs like that in different places for different things. People take it as the will of the Lord. To what extent and what times and for what subject matter such a things should be made. I mean, these people obviously had some other option in their mind with their land. They didn't know. So they want they use this type of a system. I mean, otherwise why hesitate to donate your land to Krishna? Was the big question. If you have that, you know, you don't have to do all these things. But they had a doubt. They went to the deity, they got a confirmation, they still were doubting. You know, maybe they were already attached to something.
I don't know.
Some relatives are pushing them. Prabhupada used that anyway to preach to them. They should give to Ka. Otherwise devotees, they don't need to go to do that. Whether they should donate, if they know what they can donate, what they can't. And if they're inspired to give Swami to Ka, they could do that. They don't have to get a confirmation. But there may be some things. There is such a system. Whether this is the correct way of doing that system. There's I think Kanchipuram or somewhere in South India. There's a temple where they specialize in this. Asking questions of the deity. I don't know exactly. You know, they have a whole system and they do it to get a reply from the Devi. They get very elaborate replies. Like astrologers said. We know that when Krishna Das Kaviraj was bringing the deities, whether he could for blessings to write to Chittanya Chartam Rita. Then the garland fell down from the deity and took that as a sign from the deity that he had the blessings. Anybody ever prayed to a deity and the flower fell. So that was it. Go. There is such a culture, but exactly what's the right system to get a blessing? From the deity. But then the deity may or may not also reciprocate. It depends on how much faith. And there is such a tradition in some temples when that should be used or not for devotees. Another question. Yes.
Is two on the same second. That means it's two or so is eight. So don't need to show three times.
And if it's one, eight and one.
They probably came from India. All these ancient temples went from India to China. Some sages. Sometimes it can be probably also cautioned. Sometimes it can be like a gambling. You know, people throw the sticks. Deity is there. Deity can communicate that the devil is assisted. It seems that in all temples there is this kind of ancient system for asking the deity question, which is the bona fide way of doing it and for which topics. It's really meant for serving the deity. But more important is to follow the scripture directly. You don't ask questions are you God? Things like.
Each one of 14 Manus has to produce his own laws. This is a particular need introduces 14 times during the Brahma.
Why not only once?
When the Mountvantara changes, there's destruction of the lower planets. And then a new Mano. A new creation is some kind of partial destruction. And there's a new creation of the lower planets, including Earth. So because civilization has started over again, they need a new law book. The new Mano may refer to his former how he makes a law book. If it's his department. We don't exactly know whether he refers to the previous law book that was there and republishes it. But he has to provide it again to society because it's a new society. Starts over just like every four Yugas. You Kali Yuga and you start satayuga. But then after a while they just restart everything all over again. How many four yuga cycles? 71. 71 per manu. 14 manus per day of Brahma. Is that how so 14 divided by a thousand. 71 yugas. So 71 yugas is a long time. 71 times 4 million 320 million. Yeah, 4 million 320 thousand times 71. So by that time they need to reset things. The original one law book was probably lost by that time. Needs to be updated. Maybe genetically. The humans are so out of it by that time they needed a restart. It may be a silly question.
Is there any mention of these dinosaurs and other stuff?
Prabhupada said that even today there's dinosaurs somewhere. It's not like there's. He's saying that just that for whatever they May not be visible right now in this planet but it's not that. There could be somewhere existing somewhere others could be some remnant. They say sharks are the leftover from the dinosaur cockroaches, a few things. Some reptiles are there some of the demons are riding on huge lizards. Maybe they were the carriers for the demon.
Pretty heavy.
Isn't that a great movie demons writing.
Sometimes it's mentioned that different pieces.
Some.
Things are more powerful, more merciful. I heard you mention some de are particularly more merciful.
So does that apply for for everyone.
Or like individually in some deeds are more merciful.
That's another thing one cities show mercy somebody then they tend to be very merciful. Obviously there will be individual difference between different devotees.
But then if a deity.
Is very merciful, some devotee then it's like out that that deity is very activ.
Like media.
Balaji and other famous things they say if you go there and play there you'll get.
One thing is deities have ever asked the phone I demonstrated that to somebody. The other thing is then who's worshipping how much faith and devotion they have, how much faith reciprocate them like the Jagannath deities. Even the Muslim villagers come and they pray and they're getting their benedictions fulfilled. There was someone some Muslim had refused to take Vasanam Jagannath.
And then that night I had a.
Dream where Jagannath Balade was sitting on his chest and he said you insulted my brother's prasada. You're rascal, I'm going to kill you. And then Subhaja was etching him on kill him, kill the demon. About the Jagannath saying it's not such a big thing. Let him go and said, you know if you don't apologize, you know we're going to finish you off your nonsense good for nothing married. So next day this Muslim came bowing down, said give me some posadam went beside he refused. No, no, this happened to me. I had this dream, you know I.
Realized this is the Lord and I need the Pasad or I'm going to get to smash.
He came and took Pasadam and bowed down and regularly comes now and gives donations. So here's even a demon before his offensive the Lord came into it. So some deities are like really interactive, you know.
Very.
Even when he went to he had anti devotion, he was offensive and the Lord blessed him like that. He threw it down in a message. I don't believe in all this.
Yeah, I just read in the Srihad Bhagavad Khamyan right in the beginning.
One.
Brahmin and the Brahmin said, no, no, I'm not a devotee. But this king under someone is invested. He described how this king was such a great devotee and how he worshipped the deity with such pure devotion. His entire kingdom didn't even see the deity as a murky. They all just saw it as Krishna. Because this king had so much worship. Nobody saw this as a statue. Everybody saw.
So one of you should see guarantee as directly. And then everyone else will see just that Lord is standing not as a wooden or grass, but there's a lot of actually there serving and associating with devotees. You're here to serve purification.
Prayer.
This type of discussion it.
Okay.
Zoom in on. Yeah.
See the color of his eyes. Sa forest.
And they were tired, they were slept and hungry also. So we went to a place where Brahmins were having some yagna and they went. Krishna and Balaram stayed in one place and asked the other friends, our boys to go there and look for some foods. They went there, but the Brahmins, they were busy and they didn't look at them. But they saw the wives of those Brahmins. They were there. And they went and asked for them food. And they oh, you look beautiful. Where are you from? Then they said, come, he's there. He has come there. He wants some food. Someday people all like from there whatever they have. And then things go.
Also. They asked permission from the husbands they can give. And husband said, no, wait for the yagi to finish. But anyway, they gave, disobeying their husbands. So then husbands realized that they did the right thing because they said the supreme law. These people were just involved in the ritual. Who gets the seed?
Used to go with the friends to the forest. After they prepare the calves to eat. They used to play games watching the animals in the forest. So whoever saw an animal then they have to imitate. So Krishna always was the best. He saw the peacocks. They will do exactly like them and trips and jump and do all the sounds. That was like a game. One of the games.
I like.
I remember past time where Krishna and the cowhead boys were walking forests and they decided to investigate a cave. I can't remember if the cowhead boys walked in first or if Krishna walked ahead of them. Anyway, they went into the cave and it was the mouth of a snake.
And.
Then all I remember is that Krishna swelled up like fire within the snake and killed the snake.
Is that Agasura?
Yeah, Ayasoura. Surprised?
Do you want to stand on that.
Like all our boys thought this looks like a big snake's mouth. But then someone said anyway, Krishna is there to protect us. We have nothing to worry. So they walked right in. And Krishna was amazed at how they're so fearless. But Krishna himself had to think that how are we going to save them? Because they're walking right into this demon's mouth, into the stomach. Then Krishna made this plan and went insane. Killed him a liberating his soul. Anyone else has the pastime they want to take the hot potato. Hot seed. I always end up with Maharaj. She knows thousands of stuff. So yeah.
All the fish's childhood pest. Every night he would meet with the gophers. We don't want to discuss too much detail. They would go in the forest and under trees that they had to spend special trees. Coward boys would play there in the bilbavon. I think there's one banyan tree that went so big it went all the.
Way across the these aboriginal forests.
Aboriginal forest.
That's how they transport via Facebook. Another one about that size would last.
Four or five hours.
Like a big incense stick. Just that branch. So they when that running out.
Sam there's no material atonement to counteract offenses against the Holy Name. Constantly chanting the Holy Name of the Lord is the only way to become free of offenses. One should not stop chanting, but you should chant continuously, even if one has to move offenses. Specifically, if one has offended the Holy Name, whose should pray to the Holy Name for forgiveness and chant subsequently avoiding all offenses with sincerity and discrimination. One may also chant prayers composed in glorification of the Holy Name to be forgiven for our offenses against the Holy Name. 7, 5, 2. While chanting the Holy Name of the Lord, one should be careful to avoid the 10 offenses. There is no way to atone for any of these offenses. It is therefore recommended that an offender at the feet of the Holy Name continue to chant the Holy Name 24 hours a day past. The chanting of the Holy Name will make one free of offenses. And then he will gradually be held off platform on which he can chant the pure Holy Name and thus become a lover of the Supreme Personality of Godhood. It is recommended that even if one commits offense, his love should continue chanting the Holy Name. In other words, the chanting of the Holy Name makes one offenseless. In the book Yama Kohudi, it is recommended that a coil is an offense at the lotus feet of a Vaishnava, that he should submit to that Vaishnava and be excused. Similarly, if One is an offender enchanting the Holy Name, but should submit to the Holy Name and thus be freed from his offenses. One should be very meek and humble and offer one's desires. Enchant prayers composed in glorification of the Holy Name such as one should chant such prayers to become free from offenses. At the lotus feet of the Holy.
Name.
Is a reference to the Shikish. Eight different verses Holy Name so the first one is understanding. O my dear Harinam, Holy name of Krishna, you are identical with what Sri Krishna's transcendental form according to all of the Upanishads. The Upanishads personified glorify the effulges emanating from ya Lord's feet. In other words, all of the personified Vedas taking shelter in ya Lord's feet. Sing your transcendental glories with chosen verses and yogis, Rishis and all pains of liberated souls appropriately worship your Lord's feet. Therefore I completely surrender myself at your Lord's feet. Said before coming here the first time you can see the Holy Name is the Person. So if you make an offense to the Holy Name, you want to thank the Holy Name for forgiven. Maybe that's a new kind of a concept that the vibration be living, vibration be the present. But the absolute path from everything is possible. So Krishna in any aspect is not different. So you want to chant around I come start off at the beginning of.
Your.
A big size, a little size or the big size that they're both the same size. Take the side with a little thread. If you have no thread, they're both the same size. I guess that made it for now just take it one side, just this Krishna bead. Take the next bead to it and reach in one each bead and go around. So how much time it takes to check one beard? See also when you're champing, you can show me how you hold your beads when I walk around. You ready with the timer? Everybody's ready with their beads. That sa sam.
I wasn't doing it the right way. I just learned it today. So that's the reason why I slow down. Otherwise move it faster. So I'm not used to like going this way. That's the reason why I slow down.
It can be very clear. I won't talk about holding the beads because only one person.
Did Robert actually say his stamina? I've never actually said it. I've never heard it say it written anyway. I mean, that's how I started doing it. But I presume I.
Spoke to someone.
The other day who told me that they start from the little bead, go to the big beat and that's how they would talk. I was wondering why.
Everybody has. You don't have. Who doesn't have. I was present when somebody gave a pair of, you know, beads to qualify to give for initiation and didn't have the eight bead. We threw it back after the feet and not one. I think there's a lot of cheap.
Sort of mass produced cutaways these days and they don't always have.
Yeah, Vrinavan, the Mayavadis and the Ram bhaktas, they don't have those. It's only the Krishna bhaktas have. So when they mass produce it, they don't produce wood. You have to facility order and put in a radiator yourself. I know because I buy a lot of beads and I always have to.
Order them and put on.
The price of the.
Janaran.
Janaya Paramaksharaki. O my dear Krishna. Now holy name of Krishna, you are eternally glorified by the realized souls. Just to attract the consciousness of conditioned souls throughout the material universes. Out of your conscious mercy you manifest in an honorable form of transcendental sound vibration. Your mercy is so great that when someone chants you accidentally or in neglect even for one time to destroy inconceivable quantities of their accumulated sinful reactions from many words together. My dear holy name of Ka, glory is unto you. Coming for Japa workshop I was thinking like in Malaysia.
Because it used to.
Be a Hindu country 600 years ago. And then the emperor, the king, he converted to Islam. But their language has got many Vaishnava words in it. Like their word for day is Hari. So when they want to say Merry Christmas Day, they say Hare Krishna the only the Eid Fitri, whatever they call it, at the end of Ramza, which is like one of the holiest days, they call it Hari Rai. So the king or the prime minister, he greets like 100,000 people and he says Salamat Hari Rai. Salamat Hari Rai. So he's saying hari Rani Hari 100,000 times for each person he has seen. Sell him on Hari Rai. Sell him one Hari Rai. Just thinking how auspicious that he's chanting the name Hari Hari so many times in many languages they have names for Ka in the language. In Spanish, Rama means a branch. That's also a name of Ram. Even if somebody accidentally chanced a name, there was a Muslim who was being gored by a boar with the tusk so he was very disgusted because they consider the pigs to be very.
Unclean.
So he was saying haram haram, which means sacrilegious offensive in Arabic. But the word haram in Sanskrit means oh, my dear Lord Ram Haram. So because he died saying haram haram, he went back. You got liberated from all these things, even if it was just a totally different consciousness. So the Holy Name is so powerful that even if some are accidentally chants or unconsciously chants or neglectfully chanced, probably any of you ever know anybody who neglectfully chanted their Japanese? Even there, the Holy Name gives mercy, destroys inconceivable quantities of accumulated sinful reactions for many birds of the earth. So this chanting of the Holy Name is such a very powerful process. We take it for granted often that it's actually so powerful. She wrote, I need some paper.
This time I listen to everybody like.
You normally chant, listening to your chanting. And if I hear anything, what if.
You actually can't hear the person chanting? I know the driver can say that Japanese should be such that the person sitting next to that person can hear the chanting. Would you subscribe to that?
Yeah.
There's three kinds of japa loud changing where you can hear the person next to where soft japa, where you say it very softly and only the person somewhere very close to be able to hear it. And that mental changing. This is three levels of chanting. Prover said they should chant out load. But it's mental changing if you change.
16 rounds, if you completely concentrate.
One lady asked Har does not whether she can chat mentally because she thought that it was more powerful, because it was more subtle. She took it that the more subtle way of chanting will be more powerful. But Harida's Thakur said when you chant out loud, you are benefiting other living entities, plants, insects, humans. So by helping others to be ka consciousness, you are counteracting your own offenses to the Holy Name. And therefore it's a hundred times more powerful to chant out loud. Anita's Thakur would chant hundred thousand names out loud, 100,000 names softly and 100,000 names mentally. That's how we did the 300,000. Otherwise, to chain out loud takes a little more time. A bit more time since we're only doing one twelfth of what he did. Therefore, 12 months of normally we should try to chow. I mean, obviously there are certain environments in which it's not possible. I know Chen. I love when I'm waiting at the immigration language in certain countries.
But.
In certain circumstances.
So when Harry Stacko chanted out loud.
Was he chanting part of it?
He wasn't chanting loud.
Would he be hurt? He could be hurt by people. That was how loud? Like he was chanting out loud for that hero. She was listening. She was chanting.
So then the second type is softly. So that means you have to be getting very, very close to being.
In one sense, it's also.
Okay.
Time already. It's ham it.
